Lewis, who was stated to be of habit and reput a thief, was convicted of housbreaking and theft at Glasgow Court of Justiciary on 14th July 1820 and sentenced to 14 years transportation.
He and his accomplice, John Cream, were found guilty of breaking into the house of Mr. John Mackinlay, haberdasher, situated on the road leading towards Leith, by the road from Abbeyhill, by opening a secured window, and stealing various articles of wearing apparel.

They were transprted on the ship Speke which departed on 13th December, 1820 and arrived in New South Wales, Australia on 18th May 1821.

Lewis was granted his Certificate Of Freedom in 1835 and he married Ann Connor in 1835. Ann was also a convict who had arrived in Australia in 1834 on the ship Numa.
