John Francis LEPP

  General Notes:

John 'Jack' was born in Sheffield in 1861, the son of Edward Lepp.
In the 1871 census he is shown as being away at school in Hathersage, Derbyshire with his brother Edward. In the 1881 census John is living at 49 Victoria Steet, Sheffield with his father and siblings. He is recorded as being employed in tobacco manufacture (as is his father).
He married Mary Elizabeth Pilley in 1904 in Iowa, USA. About 20 years earlier he had asked Mary Elizabeth Pilley's father if they would be allowed to marry, but was refused permission. He emigrated to America in 1885. By the early 1900's he had settled and wrote to Mary Elizabeth asking her to join him, which she did (her father had died at the end of 1902).
Mary Elizabeth and John are listed on the 1910 census in Ute, Iowa, with their 2 sons, where John was a butcher in a meat market. He left Ute around 1913 moving first to Oregan and then in 1916 to Carroll, Iowa. Here he worked for Selzer & Scharnweber in the meat market department. The rest of the family joined him from Ute in 1918. The family are listed in Whitney Street, Carroll, Iowa on the 1920 census, although John's occupation is not given. In 1921 John built and operated a pop corn and peanut roasting stand at the corner of Fifth St. and Adam St. They were still in Carroll, Iowa in 1930.
John died in 1939 in National City, California where he had relocated to in 1935, just a few years after the death of his wife.

John married Mary Elizabeth PILLEY, daughter of Albert Aloysius PILLEY and Sarah Ann FURNISS, on 3 Nov 1904 in Charter Oak, Iowa, USA. (Mary Elizabeth PILLEY was born on 6 Nov 1862 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, christened on 9 Nov 1862 in St Marie's, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, died on 1 May 1932 in Carroll, Iowa, USA and was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa, USA.)
