bullet  General Notes:

William appears to have been brought up in the household of the Hutton family - John and his wife Margaret Kirkwood. William is described in the 1851 census as a nephew of the Huttons and in 1861 as a grandchild. His mother is recorded as Elizabeth Kirkwood on his marriage certificate, but it is believed this is actually Elizabeth Weir (also known as Elizabeth Hutton) who also lived with John & Margaret Hutton and described in the 1851 census as a stepdaughter of John. It therefore seems that Elizabeth was the daughter of Margaret Kirkwood from a previous relationship with a gentleman called Weir.

John and Margaret Hutton also appear to have also helped to bring up their granddaughter, Margaret (the child of James Hutton who died in his 30s of Typhoid) and William married this Margaret Hutton on 16th July, 1880 in Canongate Parish, Edinburgh. It would appear William and Margaret were cousins.

William was born William McGinty, but having been brought up in the household of his 'grandparents' he was often known as a Hutton. He is recorded as Hutton on a number of census returns, but on other official documents both he and his children are recorded as McGinty. The family seem to have adopted the surname of McGinty Hutton and latterly simply Hutton.

William was a Typefounder. Although he is generally with the Huttons in the census records he is recorded with his father William and brother John in 1871 at 4 Campbells Close, Edinburgh. In the 1881 census his wife Margaret is recorded as being blind , but not in subsequent censuses. Their address in 1881 was 10 Milnes Court, (517 Lawnmarket), Edinburgh Tolbooth. They appear to have moved to Sheffield about 1888 and in 1891 are recorded as living at 39 Bath Street. In 1901 and 1911 they are at 107 Bromley Street. By 1919 the family had moved to 13 Midland Road, Sheffield. In Sheffield. William worked at Stephenson & Black printers as a typefounder. He is reported to have been a heavy drinker, but whilst in Sheffield he 'took the pledge' to abstain from alcohol (there is also a story that he became a lay preacher). In later years, when his three daughters and their families came together to celebrate New Year's Eve, the midnight toast was with orange juice.

William died at 13 Midland Road, Sheffield and is buried in Abbey Lane Cemetery, Sheffield. In the same grave is his wife Margaret and daughter-in-law Elizabeth, first wife of his son William. The grave stone records his age as 69 when he died, but his age differs in various records and it is more likely he was slightly older.
