Borthwick Marriages, Scotland General Index

Borthwicks in the General Index to Marriages for Scotland

The following details have been transcribed from the films of the General Index to Scottish births. These Indexes are separately orderable for Births, Marriages or Deaths. The Latter Day Saints, Family History Centres (FHCs) filmed the original books, so there are no convenient books to look at - only microfilm to roll through again and again.

Meg Greenwood, who has been the most fantastic help with the information on these pages, advises that Scotland published yearly books of ALL the folks who were Bred, Wed or Dead in any particular year. They began this book-making process in 1855, with the advent of Civil Registration. It is ongoing today. The FHCs filmed the indexes for 1855 to about 1955, each in a separate microfilm for Bs, Ms and Ds. They are each orderable at any FHC. If you go to the New Register House in Edinburgh, you can access the index books up to about 1999. The FHCs stopped filming long ago, but it is a godsend to have these for the 'dark years' of 1900 to now. Without censuses available, these Indexes are prime databases.

Format for the Indexes is:
Surname, Given name, District where birth took place, Entry number in that district's Birth Registry book.

My apologies for the formatting of this list. I have not yet mastered the art of turning Word tables and Excel documents into nice neat lists for the Web. Quick and simple conversion of photocopies and handwritten text to a neat table would also be a boon! In the meantime I figure that it is of more importance to get the information out there to help other Borthwick researchers. So far we have just three years of records.

Males - 1886 1902

Females - 1889

Before launching into the indexes here is a treasure from the past. It's just one extract of several from 'The Protocol Book of Gilbert Grote 1552-1573'. It seems that Gilbert Grote was a solicitor, and the protocol book is a listing of clients who engaged him for his services in all sorts of legal matters. This particular entry relates to the marriage contract in 1562 for Margaret Borthwick, daughter of John Borthwick of Greenlaw, and John Thompson.

Thank you Richard Keltie, 2001.

Please note that I am still trying to find a quick and simple format for recording this information. Thanks to Meg I have much, much more to add but not enough time at the moment to enter it all. This page is therfore rough and ready at the moment, so please visit again. My aim is to have all of the information available to me entered onto this page by mid-January 2002.
