Borthwick MIs in Scotland

BORTHWICK BURIALS & MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS IN SCOTLAND

Thank you to Richard Keltie, descendant of Jane BORTHWICK and Adam KELTIE (m. 1860, Edinburgh), for typing out many of these notes re Borthwick MIs and sending them to me to post on the site. I have added to Richard's information many of the bits and pieces I have collected myself as well as information that has been sent to me over the past couple of years by other Rootsweb mailing list subscribers. Thank you to all who have contributed in one way or another to this page.

If anyone else has Borthwick MIs, death indices or burial lists for Scotland that they would like to share with other researchers I would be more than happy to post them here. I'd also love to include photographs of Borthwick headstones. So please readers & researchers, if you have any Borthwick burial or MI information, no matter how small, consider sharing it with others via these pages. Your information just might help someone else to link up with missing branches of their family tree.

This list should be treated as a guide only. I don't have information about the years many of these indexes cover (some list only the MIs to 1855), whether there may be other, or later, MI listings, the thoroughness of the original research by those who recorded the MIs in the first place, etc etc. Churchyards and burial grounds are listed in alphabetical order, by place. I need to reorganise it when I have some time as things are not easy to find. Try the "Find" facility in your browser (eg. searching for first names, places, spouse surnames) if you can't see quickly what you are looking for.

There is apparently among some notes for Biggar MIs a mention of a Miss Bella Borthwick, for many years infants' mistress at Biggar, buried to the right centre of her ancestors' stone in 1964. I have not seen this information and would love to know more as I do not yet know whether/how Ms Bella Borthwick was related to my family.

James Borthwick's Monument: Memoriae Patris Sui Jacobi Borthwick a Stow, familias de Cruixtoun, filii legitimi, Pharmacopoei celeberrimi, JB progenitus M M Q P. [To the memory of his father James Borthwick of Stow, lawful son of the family of Cruixtoun, most famous Chirurgeon-Apothecary: Mr James Borthwick, his eldest son, from a mournful mind, placed this monument. M]

The MIs for Greyfriars state "The inscription on this monument, preserved by Monteith, is not now legible; but the monument itself cannot be mistaken, with its skeleton in the centre and festooned around with surgical instruments. Dr John Gairdner, in his Historical Sketch of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, has a special notice of it as remarkable. He states that Borthwick enetered the Incorporation in 1645, of which he was an active member; that he was one of the Commissioners of the Scottish Parliament of 1661; that he acquired his estate of Stow; and that he died in 1676.
