I am just beginning to understand
some of the US and Canadian Borthwick families but have a long way to
go! This is the very beginning of a page. Stay tuned! and please get
in touch with me if you know anything about Borthwicks in Canada, are
searching for Borthwicks in Canada or have some data that you'd be happy
to share with others.
Earliest
Borthwicks in Canada
Borthwick
in Quebec, 1778?
The Hampshire Record Office
holds records of the Knollis Family, Earls of Banbury including letters
from members of the Lind family to Thomas Woods Knollis. One of these
is a letter from John Lind to Banbury - ref. 1M44/150/7 - date: 22
Jan 1778. Among other things it refers to Borthwick who has
escaped the fall of Ticonderoga [America] and is now at Quebec. Who
was this Borthwick? Did he stay in Quebec?
1. Charles
Borthwick, 1815
Ships
from Scotland to America 1628-1828 by Dobson lists the following:
Ship Master Port to Port Date Passengers Source
Admiral Nelson Borthwick, Charles Aberdeen to Halifax and Pictou 15.9.1815
passengers
Who was Charles? Did he settle
in Canada? Perhaps not as the following record can be found on the
index to Scottish wills: Borthwick Charles 6/11/1865 Shipmaster, thereafter
residing in Old Aberdeen Aberdeen. This suggests that Charles died
in Scotland around 1865.
2. Bothwicks,
previously Borthwicks
Arrived at the Port of Quebec
Aug 29 1820 Ship Thomas master Wm Bothwick 11 July Portsmouth 46 officers
and men of the 76th, 37th, 60th and 70th regt. To R. Hamilton & Co
3. John
Borthwick & Catherine Glover, pre-1822
John and
Catherine must have been in Canada before 1822 as their son Robert
was born at Prince Edward Island in that year. I haven't been able
to find their marriage but know
now, thanks to Dawn Ellis, that John had been born in 1797 in Westerkirk,
DFS, Scotland. He was a grist mill operator and died on 11 Mar 1844
at Barbarawait, PE. Catherine GLOVER, a school teacher, died and it
seems that John remarried, to a Mary NEIL. I'd like to hear from any
descendants of this family as there were at least seven children,
all of whom seemed to survive to adulthood and most of whom spread
to other parts of the world, including Australia and various states
in the USA.
4. Charles
Borthwick & Selina Finch, 1833
I know that
one of the early families in Canada was that of Charles Borthwick
and his wife Selina Finch. They settled in Puslinch, Ontario in 1833
(exactly the same year that my Borthwicks came to Australia). There
is a great deal more about this family in the book by Halsey M Borthwick.
Charles apparently had three
brothers - Sandy, George and John. Sandy is said to have gone to Australia
from Scotland and all trace of him was lost after 1833. George arrived
in Quebec with his brother Charlie but then separated from him and
it is not known whether he survived and had descendants. John was
a General in the East India Army stationed at Calcutta, India, but
his whereabout were unknown after 1833.
Does any reader know about
any of these Borthwick brothers? Surely someone must know of John
the General? Do we know now who Charles Borthwick's parents were?
5. Thomas
Borthwick and Margaret Templeton, 1834
William Borthwick, Mayor
of Ottowa, seems to have been from a different Borthwick family altogether,
born in Ontario in 1848. However William's parents arrived in Canada
in 1834, just one year after Charles Borthwick and Selina Finch, above.
Were they cousins?
This biographical sketch
comes from the book Prominent men of Canada: a collection
of persons distinguished in professional and political life,
and in the commerce and industry of Canada, Adam, G. Mercer
(Graeme Mercer), 1839-1912. 480 pages. (Toronto : Canadian Biographical
Pub. Co., 1892.)

In Lady
Aberdeen's diary, digitised for the web, there is a reference
to a presentation made to a Mr Borthwick.
6. John
Douglas Borthwick, 1850
Another prominent Canadian
- historian, author, teacher, Minister. J D Borthwick travelled to
Canada from Edinburgh about 1850. He taught school first in Ontario
and then in Montreal. In 1866 he was ordained as clergyman in the
Church of England. He wrote histories of Montreal. He is mentioned
in ...
The Canadian men and women
of the time: a handbook of Canadian biography, Morgan,
Henry J. (Henry James), 1842-1913. 1176 pages. (Toronto :
W. Briggs, 1898.)

7.
Hugh Borthwick. Hugh
Borthwick was apparently the last Borthwick born in Borthwick castle.
He came to Canada and was the first Dean of Queen's University in
Kingston. Does anyone have any information about this particularly
interesting Borthwick?
8.
John Borthwick and Jane Dempsey. John Borthwick, born circa
1828 in Scotland died in 1902 in Ottawa, Ontario. He married Jane
Dempsey and their children were:
Anne E. (Annie) BORTHWICK
Isabelle BORTHWICK
Frederick BORTHWICK
Thomas BORTHWICK
Emmeline BORTHWICK
John Robinson BORTHWICK (married Sarah Jane McClure b.February
8, 1868 in Ireland)
William BORTHWICK
9. Alexander
Borthwick & Mary Isabelle Lawson. Descendant Murray
Borthwick advises that Alexander Borthwick emigrated to Canada, arriving
in Halifax Nova Scotia on 28 March 1905 and went to Toronto, Ontario. The
shipping manifests show that Alex Borthwick, age 33, Mrs Borthwick,
age 33, William age 4 and Cameron an infant, were passengers on the
vessel "Laurentian" embarking on March 17 from Glasgow, Scotland and
Londonderry, Ireland bound for Boston as a final destination by way
of Halifax. Later branches of this family moved to Detroit, Michigan.
**********
I would be glad to hear from any members
of these families in Canada or elsewhere in the world. I would be
pleased to place on this page more information about these families,
and any other early Canadian Borthwicks I discover.
Does any reader know of other,
or even earlier, Borthwick families in Canada?

Prince
Edward Island, Canada
On 11 November 2001 I searched
the Prince Edward Island, Canada indices for censuses, for Borthwick
and Bothwick. On both searches I got the following results.
Checking census document 1841... No
results found.
Checking census document 1891... No results found.
Checking census document 1901... No results found.
Please note however that the on-line index
contains only 25,229 entries from the database of over 90,000 names.
The index contains information for all those identified as heads of
households or those in the household having a different surnames from
the head of the household. The names of other family members living
in the household are found only in the full census.
I am also not clear about the status
of the 1841 and 1901 indices. I recommend that you go to the Prince
Edward Island site yourself if you have an interest in any census
data.

Borthwicks
on North American VRI (LDS CD)
The LDS Vital Records Indices are
not complete listings of births and marriages in a particular
country but are very useful, and inexpensive, collections of
information for any researcher.
The LDS Vital Records Index for
North America includes just one Borthwick entry for Canada:
CLARKE, James Marriage
Wife: Agnes BORTHWICK Marriage Date: 28 Apr 1837 Recorded
in: Bathurst District, Ontario Source: FHL Number 1030051
Dates: 1831-1851
Ancestral
File and the International Genealogical Index (IGI)
As many may know the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints (commonly referred to as the LDS) has an enormous
amount of information of value to genealogists all over the world. Some
of this information is not accurate however as it has been submitted
by individuals who have not necessarily researched the records properly.
Consequently IGI and Ancestral File information should be treated as
a very valuable lead to further research. It is suggested that anyone
new to these records should read as much as possible on the LDS site
and in other generalogical publications to understand and make a proper
assessment of them. To search the LDS records on line click
here.
The following records illustrate the sort
of information that is available about Borthwicks in Canada. For each
of these there is more information on the LDS site.

Soldiers
of the First World War
Canadian
Archives has a great site with searchable databases. There are 40
Borthwicks (exact spelling) listed in the WWI soldiers section. On the
site itself there is more information about each one of these soldiers.
You will find dates and places of birth, occupations, names of family
members, descriptions of the soldiers themselves, images of attestation
papers and much more. To provide an idea of the information I've included
some of the details for just a few of the people listed below. It is
strongly recommended that you visit the Canadian Archives site
if you see someone here who might be of interest to your research.

The British Columbia Branch of the Burma
Star Association lists among its foundation members R. Roy Borthwick,
159 PFF Sqdn. RCAF in RAF. I suspect that the Roy Borthwick whose memories
are recorded on a webpage
is this Roy Borthwick. Here is an extract:
Now our only option was to ditch,
and this was not good news. Very few Liberator ditchings were successful,
as they had a tendency to break up badly when they hit the water.
The soft bomb bay doors would collapse, water hitting the aft bulkhead
with such force it would break the back of the aircraft.
Two Borthwicks are included amongst a list
of Canadians who served in Minnesota
Regiments. (Thanks to Geoff Rasmussen.)

Gayle Hitchens Borthwick. Amateur
golfer, a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. Her biography includes
many victories in Canada, as well as two United States Senior Women's
Amateur titles, and the 1963 Australian Two-Ball Champion (with Betty
Stanhope Cole of Edmonton). I believe Gayle's maiden name was HITCHENS.
Gayle was born Gayle Hitchens in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1944, spent
several years in British Columbia, where she wrapped up the provincial
title in 1962 and won the Canadian Amateur and the 1994 Canadian Senior,
as well as numerous provincial titles. Then moved to Ontario. In 1996
Gayle Borthwick won her first international solo title, the U.S.Women's
Senior Championship. Her aweards and honours are many. In 1997, a press
release of the United States Golf Association describes Gayle as a retired
school teacher, from Mississauga, Ontario (this in near Toronto).
Walter Borthwick, Chair of the Ontario
Municipal Employees Retirement Board (OMERS)
Board in 2001, was appointed to the Board in May 1998. He is the Mayor
of Wasaga Beach and is completing his 22 nd year in that office. Prior
to becoming Mayor in 1978, he served as a Councillor in Wasaga Beach
for five years.

Borthwick Families in Canada
The site for family records of James
Allan, Eramosa Twp. in Wellington County, Ontario lists Lily May
BORTHWICK, born Abt 1893 died 7 Jul 1988.
John Potts Borthwick, who had a brother
named Archibald, was born and raised in Scotland. He served in the First
World War. He met Margret (Peggy) Madson, a nurse, married and moved
to Canada after the War. Members of this family are still living in
Canada.
On Vancouver Island, BC, Canada are some
descendants of William Borthwick and Agnes Harrison Scott of Lilliesleaf,
Roxboughshire, Scotland. William and Agnes also had a grandson who went
to New Zealand. William Borthwick was a son of John Borthwick and
Mary Robson and there is another line of Borthwicks in Canada, also
descended from this couple through another son, Thomas.
In 1978 the Lord Provost of Edinburgh was
the Rt. Hon. Kenneth Borthwick and he and the Lady Provost, Lady Borthwick,
visited Vancouver, BC in Canada.

Wonder whether he had any Borthwick relatives there at the time?
Lost
Borthwicks in Canada
1. Elizabeth
Streight is researching the STREIGHT family in Canada, specifically
the descendants of John Holden Streight, who arrived from Ireland in
1836. Dorothy Ivelue Streight (20 July 1905, Oxford Mills, Ontario -
10 Feb 1998, Toronto, Ontario) is the daughter of William Strieght and
Thressa STEPHENS. On 19 April 1930, she married Gordon BORTHWICK
(11 Nov 1903 Toronto - 14 Feb 1968, Ottawa, Ontario). They are both
buried in the Oxford Mills Union Cemetery in Oxford Mills, Ontario.
Dorothy and Gordon did not have any children. If any reader knows the
names of Gordon Borthwick's parents, Elizabeth would appreciate this
information.
2. Wayne Borthwick is searching for information
about his great-grandfather Ralph Borthwick. Ralph was
apparently born in Manchester, England about 1833 and migrated to Victoria,
BC, Canada in 1858 probably via California and the gold rush. Does anyone
know of him or of his ancestors?
3. A lost monument. Victoria BC. Does
anyone know anything about this monument or the Borthwick it commemorated?
There is an old letter in the records of the Old Cemeteries Society
dated 1992 regarding a Mrs Warburton [of Victoria, BC]. Apparently she
had called to ask if a monument to Alexander BORTHWICK still stood in
Pioneer Square [Victoria's 2nd cemetery which was used from about 1855
to 1872]. She said that she, her mother and her grandmother had seen
it in 1916 when she was 8 yrs old. Someone from the society checked
and there was a BORTHWICK monument still standing but the first name
had fallen off. When contaced in 1992 Mrs Warburton said that this BORTHWICK
was a relative of her grandmother and had 'run away to sea.' The only
problem is that there is no mention of what Mrs Warburton's maiden name
was. Does anyone know anything about this family?
4. A lost reference. I've saved the following
notes regarding Borthwicks but can't now discover the source of this
information. Once I have it I will post it.
