Moffat Families / Births, Marriages, Deaths / Dumfriesshire Sasines / Miscellaneous / I have a great interest in Borthwicks in Moffat as my own family had connections there in the late 1700s. I suspect that their ancestors were from Moffat and Kirkpatrick-Juxta in Dumfriesshire and/or from Peebleshire. The following is the record of my ancestor, William Murray Borthwick's birth. This was on May 13th 1782, according to the OPR, but a family sampler sewn circa 1840, and other official records, give his birth date as 5 May 1782.
Quite a few other Borthwick families who came to Australia also had Moffat connections. Were they related? I will add more information to this page as it comes to hand. If you too are researching Borthwicks in Moffat and would like to share any of your research, and/or information about your own Borthwick family, I would be happy to post it here for you. If any reader is descended from the families mentioned on this page, or knows anything about them, I'd love to hear from you. Please email me any time! My Own Family William Murray Borthwick (1782-1866) Details above. At the time his father was said to be "at Selcoth". Was he a farmer? a shepherd? a landlord? Selcoth is a beautiful valley leading into steep and rugged sheep farming country near Moffat. Alexander BORTHWICK & Mary McNIGHT or CRAIG. Lived Biggar and Glasgow in early 1800s. He died around 1840. Mary McNight was born in Moffat in 1802, daughter of Alexander McNight and Mary Craig. Some descendants came to Australia and New Zealand in the 1850s. I'd like to find others. Robert BORTHWICK. Born Moffat circa 1795 (but I have not yet found a record of his birth) Went to Philadelphia in the USA in 1818. Married Sophia LIVINGSTON, said to be a descendant of the Livingstons of Livingston Manor. Am trying to trace family in America. One son and his wife must have "retired" to Italy as they both died there in the early 1900s! John Borthwick & Margaret McCall. Married at Wanlockhead, Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire in 1862. Between 1870 and 1877 they had four children born at Moffat, including one born at Selcoth, the birthplace of my ancestor William Murray Borthwick nearly 100 years earlier. Coincidence - or family connection with Selcoth? Other Families Marjory Borthwick. Born Moffat or Swinefoot near Kirkpatrick-Juxta in 1709. Marjory's partner or husband was William Murray. Her father MIGHT have been Alexander Borthwick of Swinefoot. I would love to know more about this family so please email me if you have any information or ideas. William Borthwick & Elspeth Johnston. Married 24 May 1747 in Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland. Did they have any children? George Borthwick & Janet Porteous (daughter of James Porteous). George was a tailor in Moffat. Their son John was baptized at Moffat on 17 December 1752. George Borthwick was a weaver in Moffat at that time. They had altogether six children Rachel 1745, Ann 1747, James 30 March 1749, William 31 March 1751, John (above), and George 23 April 1756. I am particularly interested in this family as George's father William was married to Ann Johnston and the Johnston family seem to have owned Selcoth farm near Moffat. Perhaps this is a branch of my own family? George Borthwick and Margaret Hendry. Married in Moffat in 1760 and had two daughters, and perhaps other children as well. The daughters were Isabel born 1762 and Hope born 1764. I wonder whether Margaret Hendry was the second wife of George Borthwick mentioned above? Henry Borthwick & Mary Ewart. Henry was the Sheriff's Officer at Moffat in the late 1700s. He and his spouse had at least 3 children - George 1791, Mary 1794 and Jean 1800. Henry & Mary had been married at Kirkpatrick-Juxta on 10 April 1785. They must have been living at Moffat around the same time as my own family. Hugh Borthwick & Ann Brown. Married at Moffat in 1787, they had four sons James 1788, William 1794, John 1798 and Alexander (or was his name Hugh) 1804, all baptised at Kirkmichael. It is thought that Alexander/Hugh married Janet Baxter and had a large family, including twins Alexander and Frances (but may be Francis) born 20 Oct 1835/1836 and baptized 27 October. Adam Borthwick, son of Thomas Borthwick & Mary Tait, was born at Moffat, in 1797. Adam later married Isabella Kerr and emigrated to South Australia then later New Zealand. John Borthwick & Janet Bell had a son named William baptized at Moffat on 15 July 1811. This family is a mystery. Does any reader know anything more about them? Elizabeth (Betty) Borthwick. Elizabeth married David Johnson on 20 Jun 1817 in Moffat. Her death, 63 years later, was recorded in the Dumfries & Galloway Standard, 11 December 1880, column 4G "On the 6th instant, at Alfred Cottage, Beechgrove, Moffat, Elizabeth Borthwick, aged 84, relict of David Johnstone." Who were Elizabeth's parents? Ann Borthwick, born Moffat circa 1808, married Adam Templeton at Greenhill, Kirkpatrick-Juxta in 1827. It is possible that Adam's mother was also a Borthwick - Elizabeth Borthwick. William Borthwick married Margaret Kirkpatrick on 1 August 1817 at Moffat, and had at least four children baptised at Kirkmahoe. Many descendants were born at Slacks, Tinwald in Dumfriesshire which continued to be the family farm until into the 20th century. Margaret Borthwick nee Kirkpatrick's Death Notice was published in the Dumfries & Galloway Standard, on 16 March 1870. 5F: "On the 13th instant, at Slacks, parish of Tinwald, Margaret Kirkpatrick, aged 79 years, relict of Mr William Borthwick, farmer there." John Borthwick and Elizabeth Cowan, Moffat, DFS, SCT ... .. searching for the parents of John Borthwick, who lived near Moffat in 1818 ..... Lawrence Borthwick and Joan Thorburn. On Val Hvidston's page for Borthwick & Mitchell family History you will find more about Martha Jane Borthwick who was born at Moffat on the 19 December 1838, the oldest child of Lawrence Borthwick and Joan Thorburn. Her siblings were Walter (7 December 1840), Elisabeth (19 October 1842), Jane (3 August 1844), Margaret (15 February 1847), Robert (25 December 1848), Marianne (26 March 1851) and Joan (2 June 1853). David Borthwick married on 3 Jan 1845 in Halkirk Caithness Scotland, Mary Ann Oliver, born 11 Aug 1825 in Latheron Caithness Scotland; christened 11 Aug 1825 in Berriedale Caithness, daughter of James Oliver and Janet Turnbull. David gives his place of birth on the 1881 Census as Moffat and on the 1851 Census as Peebleshire! (Family of Maurice French) Janet Irvine Borthwick. Born 17 Nov 1863 at Moffat to Agnes Borthwick. Martha Borthwick. Possibly the daughter of a Robert Borthwick of Kirkpatrick-Juxta she married William Halliday on 4 June 1867 in Moffat. (This has caused some confusion in various records as it seems that a different Robert Borthwick married a Martha Halliday and another a Margaret Halliday!) Henrietta Turnbull Borthwick. Born 1909 to Janet Borthwick, daughter of David Borthwick & Henrietta Turnbull. It seems that henrietta Turnbull Borthwick had some connection to Moffat when she married Andrew Coke in Kircudbright in 1932. It would be wonderful to find living children or grandchildren of this family!
