Robert Forrester Borthwick, motor car inventor

ROBERT FORRESTER BORTHWICK (1871- 19??)

Robert Forrester Borthwick was a descendant of Thomas BORTHWICK & Margaret McNAB(B) who were married on 23 October 1820 in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland (M195047).

One of their sons, Colin BORTHWICK, and his wife Susan McLACHLAN, emigrated to Australia, via New Zealand, in the late 1800s. Members of the family stayed in touch with their cousin R F Borthwick in Glasgow and had a copy of the press clipping, below.

We think that Robert Forrrester was the son of Colin's younger brother, John McNab BORTHWICK, and Jessie McNab FORRESTER, born on 7 October 1871 in Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

The newspaper clipping below states that Robert invented an early motor car, owned motor licence 1, and was a founder of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC). In the 1900s when this article was written, he lived in Kessington Rd, Bearsdon, Glasgow.

Australian cousins would be delighted to find other members of this family in Scotland or elsewhere. Please email me if you think you have a connection.

Unfortunately the press clipping is not of high quality so the article is difficult to read. I will retype it as soon as I can & will post the typed text on this page also.

"SCOTS CAR PIONEER THREW AWAY CHANCE OF A FORTUNE. HE OWNS FIRST LICENCE. Queen Victoria's Amazement. By Founder of RAC."
