We believe this is a portrait of William Murray Borthwick (1782-1866). It was owned by his youngest daughter Jane (Mrs Angus Fletcher) and had written on the back "William Murray Borthwick". Jane's brother William Murray had a much rounder face so it is unlikely to be him. The man in this portrait is also very similar to the adult in the large painting of a man and his small child that has been passed down in the family. That painting is believed to be a portrait of William Murray Borthwick I and one of his sons, perhaps painted by WMB I's younger brother, John, who was a portrait painter in Liverpool, England around this time.
