AND THEIR DESCENDANTS

Aside from the couples who had descendants many other members of the Brislington Browns and their kin are buried at St Luke's. I am indebted to Dave Napier who searched for our family gravestones in St Luke's and then took these great photos for all to share. His photos are on many pages throughout this site and Dave also sent me the monumental inscriptions and a map of the location of the various headstones. Thank you Dave!

Nathaniel and James Brown

First, two unmarried sons of William BROWN & Sarah HORT (who had married on 9 December 1725 at St John, Bedminster, Somerset, England).

Dave Napier, 1999

"NATHANIEL BROWN
son of William and Sarah Brown
of this Parish who died 22 Octr
1768 Aged 41 Years
Also the above WILLIAM BROWN
died 18 June 1783 Aged 78 Years."

And this photograph, taken by someone else, appears to be a different headstone for the same two people. (The headstone above can be seen in the background.) This is very confusing! Did graves have both a headstone and a footstone in the 1700s perhaps?

It has the following inscription

N B
Stay reader stay so (?) where I lie
As you are now so once was I
As I am now so must you be
Prepare for Death and follow me

and underneath

"WB
1783"

There are some stories about Nathaniel Brown that I will later add to this page so please visit again.

Just behind and to the left of this headstone is one for Charles Thompson. Charles, a bachelor of St Mary Redcliff, Bristol had married Nathaniel's niece Ann Golstone at St. Mary Redcliff on 1 Mar 1778. Ann's parents were Catherine Brown and Jas Golston (Golstone).

There were apparently many descendants of the Thompson family still in Bristol and Brislington in the early 1900s but I have not yet found any of them.

Next, we have a photograph of the headstone for Nathaniel's brother James.

Dave Napier, 1999

"Here Lieth the Body of
JAMES BROWN
Son of
WILLIAM and SARAH BROWN

of the Parish
who died the 31st day of October
1811 Aged 79 Years."
