The 1931 Map of Lublin

This map of Lublin was reprinted in 1991, but I can no longer find it for sale. I was lucky enough to find a second-hand one for sale, which I have made available here. Remember that this map cannot be used for any kind of financial gain, it is here for research purposes only. Since this map was first produced in 1931 the shape of Lublin has changed tremendously, and to compare it with a modern map you might not recognise it as the same place until you look a bit closer. There are new road systems and completely new districts in what were formerly green field zones. While on this map you can still distinguish a difference between Piaski and the main part of the city, that is no longer possible unless you know what you are looking for.

Below is a small-scale version of the map, but by clicking on the link below it will take you to a much better copy of the map. To get a reasonable definition, so that you can read the road names etc., makes the resulting map too large to have in one piece. I have divided it into sections, at the top of each map page there are some navigation buttons to take you to the next map part of the map. While you are reading this, the page is already loading the map images you will need in the background. Taking the opportunity to review the information on this page first will both make you more familiar with what the map is going to show you as well as making the map quicker to use because more of it will have already loaded by the time you start. Part way down this page is a graphic that indicates how many of the map images have loaded.

Further down this page there are several indexes: Streets, Districts & Buildings. Remember that since 1931 many of the streets will have changed their names more than once, some even returning to their pre-war one's since 1989. Similarly while many institutions are still in their original locations, some have since moved. There are even a few road names that are now used to designate different roads than they did originally. Polish characters are not used, however, since many people have browsers which do not display all of them correctly. Some road names are difficult to make out even on the copy this map was taken from, so if in doubt try looking for roads on the Street Index that appear in the same square on the map. Some of the numbered buildings on the map are numbered incorrectly: for example both the Trybunal and the Bronowice public baths are shown as '32' on the map, while the latter is actually '33' on the list.

It is also worth noting that some roads that are marked on this map do not exist: they were planned but for various reasons, including such things as the great depression, they were never constructed. This applies mainly to the western suburbs, where if you compare it with the modern map there are a lot of differences. Remember if you see a road with no buildings marked on it and is reasonably straight it may be one of these roads. On the other hand there are districts marked that today are completely different because they were primarily Jewish districts up to about 1942, and were the subject of wholesale destruction after the population had been transferred to camps etc. This primarily concerns the area between the old town and the castle, and Wieniawa. I also see that there are quite a few buildings that certainly existed at the time are not marked, I do not know why although it is possible that they were deliberately missed out as they may have been owned by the military. While on that subject, many areas marked with a white background are military areas - but note that those with descriptive names are usually factories, or even a race course in one instance.
