Notes on Polish Pronunciation

The Family Butcher Homepage

At present, the alphabet used is the English one and all special Polish letters have been rendered to the most similar in form, although not pronunciation. This is not a definitive work on Polish pronunciation, but should be sufficient for the names in the tree.

The next version of this page will have graphical representations of Polish letters. When I figure out how to make Polish letters appear in HTML using my program, then the Polish Alphabet will be used throughout. On some of the TREE pages they already appear.

Polish letters generally have only one pronunciation, but there are exceptions. Last letters of words are often softened (ie B becomes P) and sometimes a letter can alter the pronunciation of the previous letter ( I in SI alters the sound of S).

For example:

A common name Boleslaw actually is pronunced like Bolleswav (and the last four letters are quite typical for a Polish masculine name.)
