Sizemore Family Data--Raw Notes--Virginia DeMarce--17 August 1996 COMMENTS: The book (Kennedy, p. 24) identifies Edward Sizemore, b. 1725, with Edward Sizemore of the Eastern Cherokee affidavits. They must be two separate men, since the second Edward "Old Ned" Sizemore who was the ancestor discussed under Eastern Cherokee claims lived until approximately 1858 according to the Guion Miller testimony taken in 1908 (see below). In one place, Kennedy claims specifically to be a descendant of the one who was the "self-proclaimed Cherokee," but dates his birth to 1725. The book also identifies the wife of Joseph Phipps Sr. (1730-?:) as a daughter of Ned Sizemore, "name lost to history" (Kennedy, p. 56). If such a connection can be documented, it must be to a daughter of one of the older Edward Sizemores, not to the "Eastern Cherokee claims" Old Ned Sizemore (see below). None of the material located (see notes below) alleged a Phipps marriage for one of the Cherokee Claims Edward "Old Ned" Sizemore's daughters. Kennedy states (Kennedy, p. 24) that "Crocket [Ritchie]'s son John Ritchie married Sylvania Sizemore, daughter of the self-proclaimed Cherokee Edward "Ned" Sizemore, born in 1725," citing Jean Ritchie, Singing Family of the Cumberlands, p. 99. Unfortunately, Kennedy in this passage provided no chronological data for Crocket Ritchie, John Ritchie, or the claimed daughter Sylvania (Sizemore) Ritchie. Also in connection with that claimed marriage, the impossibility of the man born in 1725 being the man associated with the Eastern Cherokee claims stands. The Guion Miller testimony did not allege a daughter "Sylvania" among the children of that "Old Ned" Sizemore. Again, as seen in the notes below, no documentation was located for a Ritchie/Sizemore marriage in Kennedy's ancestry. The chart on p. 99 of Ritchie's Singing Family of the Cumberlands gave no parentage for Sylvania Sizemore. On pp. 112-113, Jean Ritchie indicated that her father was Ned Sizemore, who was half Indian. However, this man was not the "Old Ned" Sizemore discussed in the Guion Miller affidavits. She would appear to be the Sylvia Sizemore discussed below, who belonged to another branch of the Sizemore family. The 1850 U.S. Census, Perry Co., KY, p. 419, shows Crockett Richie, age 60, b. NC (Sistler & Sistler, 1850 Census, Eastern Kentucky, p. 284; Perry County Genealogical 1982, p. 21). This man m. Susan Grigsby, b. 1782-d. 1876, called "wife of Alex Crocket Ritchie" (Perry County Genealogical Society Newsletter, August 1987, p. 37). This couple has to be of a younger generation than the Alexander Ritchie who was brother of the Delilah Ritchie who married into the Roberson family. Certainly the John Richie shown on the 1850 Perry Co. census married to Sylvia (not Sylvania), was not of an age to be married to a daughter of "Old Ned" Sizemore: He was 35, b. VA; she 34; the annotations have a question mark on the surname Sizemore for her (Perry County Genealogical and Historical Society 1982, 25-26). QUERY: Was there a, and if so what was the, connection of the Ashe Co., NC "Old Ned" Sizemore to Loyalist "Old Ned" Sizemore supposedly hung by Col. Ben Cleveland from the Tory Oak in Wilkesboro, NC? QUERY: Who was the Bill Sizemore who ran a gang that terrorized the Clinch Valley during the Civil War and was killed in a shootout in Hancock Co., TN, shortly after the war? NOTE BY JHGoins: he was killed by Iredell Lewis; both were great grandsons of Owen Sizemore Sr. NOTE BY VED: Thus far, I have not been able to document a birthdate of ca. 1725/27 for the first Edward Sizemore who appears in the record. It appears to be an estimation that people have made from the 1748 tithables record in Lunenburg Co., VA. Personally, I think perhaps: 1. Edward Sizemore (b.c. 17?? - d. ca. 1780). Some genealogists give date of birth as ca. 1725, apparently estimated from appearance as witness in 1748, Lunenburg Co., VA. 1748 tax list, Lunenburg Co., VA. NOTE: This earliest Edward Sizemore is apparently claimed as ancestor by almost all researchers. I have located no documentation to indicate that he was father of the following man, or of any of those below. Manifestly, he can't have been father of them all, since there are two Georges and two Owens. NOTE: JHGOINS says he was b. 1720 and 1746 he entered 400 acres at the mouth of Polecat Creek on the south side of Banister River (1746 in Lunenburg; 1752 in Halifax; 1767 in Halifax Co., VA). 2. Edward Sizemore (b.c. 174?--d.c. 1811, Hawkins Co., TN). NOTE: JHGoins says he lived near the Greene Co., TN, line. INFORMATION FROM LITERATURE SURVEY: NOTE BY VED: Please be aware that the following information taken from a preliminary literature survey contains inconsistent information on an Edward Sizemore who was supposedly born in 1727. The information is not to be accepted without verification through the documents. I suspect that there may be a generation missing. None of the following publications was documented, and the information is internally inconsistent. The Edward Sizemore who is said to have been born ca. 1725/27 is given two separate dates and places of death. I believe that there may be a generation missing, or that some of the lines below may be traceable to one of the other Sizemores living in the first half of the 18th century. Begley, Silas H. ACCORDING TO THE ECA'S: NOTE: This section contains the way the ECA's look, without my editorial analysis and corrections as given above. I think that some of the statements below were confusing this "Old Ned" with an "Old Ned" of a younger generation. D. Edward "Old Ned" Sizemore, b.c. 1755/65 [or, if Francis M. Woody's estimate was correct, b.c. 1773-1783]--d.c. 1858, POSS in Allegheny Co., NC, but other testimony said in Wyoming Co., WV (see below) [b.c. 1767], raised in Allegheny Co., NC lived in "what is now Allegheny but was then Ashe" Cherokee or Catawba? Testimony of William H. Blevins, saying he remembered Elisha Blevins saying that old Ned Sizemore came from the Catawba River, of the Catawba Reservation, as he called it.[ NOTE BY VED: There was a "Catawba" River in Halifax Co., NC, where Sizemores are known to have lived.] poss took part in War of 1812 to Ashe Co., NC m. Believes he was in the Wafford enrollment. Knew James Hart who m. Catherine, dau. of Ned Sizemore. Ned Sizemore had sons Owen & George. QUERY BY VED: If "Old Ned" was that old, and actually lived that long, why don't I ever pick him up on the census if he was where they said he was! NOTE BY VED: Miller estimated b.c. 1740/1760, Halifax Co., VA or Halifax Co., NC, but I think he was guessing the birthplace because the other Sizemore line came from Halifax Co., VA. NOTE BY VED: According to Miller's report, POSS a son of John Sizemore, who lived in Stokes Co., NC and had eight children, but the testimony was far from strong on that point. NOTE BY VED: The various applications were in disagreement concerning the list of children of "Old Ned," and many seemed to have the generations confused. #8468 said Owen Sizemore was a son of Ned Sizmore Sr. and a brother of Lydia Blevins, George Sizemore, Catherine Hart, & Ned Sizemore Jr.; Sally Osborne Hiram Sizmore, and Dolly Hash. #8584 said children of Ned Sizemore were: Owen, George (a preacher), Ned, Catherine Hart, Sallie Osborne, Sookey Stamper, Dollie.
