Generation 1. - Thomas Applegate

Thomas Applegate was born circa 1604, and died after 1656 at Gravesend, Long Island (New York). He is the earliest Applegate from whom our lineal descent can be proven.

There are many differences of opinion as to where Thomas was before he and his family came over to the New World. Most people agree the family's English roots were in Norfolkshire, England, but many sources think Thomas, and possibly his father spent several years in Holland. In 1578 the Dutch opened negotiations with English merchants in Antwerp to bring over English settlers to Holland and Zeeland (southwestern part of Holland) to work in the trading houses and expedite goods flowing between England and Holland. By 1617, English manufacturers had sites all over the Dutch Republic. It is a good possibility our Applegates spent time in Holland, and Thomas Sr. may have learned and worked the rag trade in Holland. It may be no coincidence the Applegates were one of several early English families allowed to settle New Netherlands in the 1640's. Although the Dutch were desperate for settlers, and willing to take Englishmen, they preferred people who spoke Dutch, had lived in Holland, or were married into Dutch families. Several of Thomas's early English neighbors fit this description, and it is possible Thomas did as well.

Thomas married Elizabeth Mary Wall circa 1620. She was also born about 1604 - most likely at Norfolkshire, England. Some sources claim that Thomas met and married Elizabeth in Holland, and at least some of their children were born there. The Wall family was of English origin, and were in the earliest colonial records along side the Applegates.

Thomas and Elizabeth had the following children:

  1. Bartholomew Applegate
    • b. circa 1620 - England
    • d. 1690
    • m. Oct 1650 to Hannah Patrick (-1692) at Gravesend, Long Island (New York). They had the following children: John Applegate (c. 1650-1688); Hannah Applegate; Mary Applegate; Daniel Applegate (c. 1652-1710); Thomas Applegate; Benjamin Applegate, and Jacob Applegate.

Johanna was born circa 1652 in NJ and died after 1699 at Monmouth County, NJ. For further information on her ancestry see the Gibbons Family.

Thomas and his brother, John, were brought up on bootlegging charges on more than one occasion. Ther were the earliest recorded bootleggers in our family. Although the Baptists and Methodists in the family did not approve of drinking, there are several examples of our teatotaling Applegates taking anip or two... for medicinal purposes, of course.

The Gibbons were prominent land owners in early New Jersey, and lived previously near the Applegates in Gravesend. Johannah's father was appointed sheriff by the Dutch to keep law and order among the unruly English settlers (most consipuously, the Applegates) on Long Island. The Gibbons were Quaker Baptists, and when the sect collapsed in the early 1700's they and their in-laws, the Applegates, joined the nearby Baptist church in Middletown, New Jersey. There was also a Methodist Chruch in Middletown, and a few Applegates wandered into that congregation.
