English law governed the American colonies. From about 1680 it was the
general practice to deposit wills with the Provincial secretaries, together
with inventories of estates, accounts of executors and administrators, and
other papers pertaining to such matters. These records were brought together
in 1790 or shortly thereafter, in the office of the Secretary of State of
Trenton, where they are now carefully arranged and preserved. Information can
include occupation, residence, relatives and property owned.

Birth Notes

There are discrepant records for the birth and death of Elias Newberry. Most
family group sheets have listed his birth as 4 August or 4 April 1794 and the
gravestone (fairly new) lists his death as 9 June 1878 at the age of 83 years,
but I believe all of those are incorrect and based off of the same faulty
record. The Wood County, Ohio probate records clearly show he died 9 June 1879
at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 5 days which puts his birth at 4 April
1796.

Death Notes

Even though Elias's headstone says he died in 1878 and was 83 years old, it is
in error. A book with "Records of Deaths recorded in Probate Court for Wood
County, Ohio" shows he died in 1879.
