believed to be Jessie Archibald MurrayThis tintype (now lightened) was found in a box of family photos from Robert Murray's home in Wellsville -- since then lived in by Joneses, descendants of Robert Murray. The photos were found by Richard "Kim" Jones of Highland, Utah.  This photo is believed to be Jessie Archibald Murray

Tintypes were invented in the 1850's and were very popular during the Civil War years (1860's) and for a few years thereafter.  They were usually taken by street or carnival photographers.  The photos were developed on a hard metallic surface which could be sent home with the customer within minutes.

The best guess is that this photo would have been taken about the 1860's when Jessie would have been about 35 years old.

It is likely that if Jessie had her photo taken, her husband Robert Murray probably did, too.  But not tintype of him has yet been located and identified.
Jessie Archibald MurrayThis photo of Jessie Archibald Murray was part of a Book of Remembrance passed down to Cindy Kingsford from her mother.  The photo was in a photo pedigree chart and was labeled as being "Jessie Archibald Murray"  This would have been in her later years.
Jessie Murray BrownThis is Jessie Murray Wood, a granddaughter of Jessie Archibald Murray.  Her labeled photo was also contained in the Book of Remembrance which Cindy Kingsford inherited from her mother.

You can see a strong family resemblance to grandmother Jessie.
Christian Archibald Smaill, sister to JessieThis is Jessie's older sister Christian (pronounced Christy-ann) Archibald Smaill who emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand with her husband Andrew Smaill in 1859.
believed to be Agnes Archibald, mother of Jessie Archibald MurrayThis photo is believed to be of Agnes Archibald, wife of James Archibald, and mother to Jessie Archibald Murray, Christian Archibald Smaill and Agnes Archibald Kerr.

It is from a tintype found in a box of Murray family photos inherited by Richard "Kim" Jones.  At first, we thought it might have been of Jessie Archibald Murray,  but when the second tintype (at the top of this page) was also discovered in the box, AND Cindy Kingsford shared her family's photo of Jessie (second photo from the top) we realized a mistake had been made and that this had to be an older generation - mostly like Agnes, mother of Jessie.  The woman is elderly, missing her teeth, and wearing clothing (dress and neckerchief) that corresponds to an earlier generation..
Agnes Archibald KerrThis is a photo of Agnes Archibald Kerr, daughter of Agnes Archibald and James Archibald; wife of David Hamilton Kerr; sister of Jessie Archibald Murray.

You can see a strong resemblance between this daughter Agnes and the mother Agnes. Perhaps Jessie and Christian looked more like their father's line.
