It is a family tradition that Joseph Wesley was working on the railroad handling freight when he met Carrie in Westport. That Carrie and Joseph were both Baptists might indicate that they met at church or a church function. (Carrie Estelle Skillings is #60.)

"Mrs. Carrie E. Blackwood passed to her heavenly rest on June 26, after a long and painful illness. Her life was unusually full of a busy ministry, though not long in years, she being but 52 years of age. She was highly esteemed as a faithful wife and devoted mother and her christian influence was felt throughout the community. Her gain is the loss of many friends and neighbors and she leaves to miss her loving ministries her husband, W.J. Blackwood, ten daughters, and eight grandchildren, all of whom were privileged to be with her during the last three weeks of life. The names of the daughters follow: Mrs. Harrison Holmes, Machiasport, Mrs. Frederick Channel, Alexandria, LA, Mrs. Arthur Libby, Machiasport, Mrs. James E. Johnson, Tallulak, LA, Mrs. Louis Sawyer, Stonington, ME, Mrs. Edward Brown, Bath, ME, Mrs. Wyman Johnson, Rogue Bluffs, ME, Misses Helen, Iva, and Genesta at home. Mrs. Blackwood also leaves a brother, Albert Skillings of West Gray, ME, and two sisters, Mrs. Wallace Black of Westbrook, ME and Mrs. George Rider of NY.

In the newly renovated church on June 27, funeral services were conducted by Mrs. Phineas Allen, pastor at East Machias Baptist Church. The body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery adjoining the church."
