Descendants of Ferdinando Huff (Hough): First Generation

First Generation

1. Ferdinando1 Huff (Hough), son of Atherton Huff (Hough) and Susannah Kimball, (#10600) was born in Boston, Suffolk, MA c1640.(1) age 41y in Oct 1681

NOTE: Despite some claims to the contrary, it does not appear that Atherton Hough is the father of Ferdinando Huff. However, there are some sources who say he is the son of Atherton by a 2nd wife ???? Further investigation is warranted.... Individual flags: InnKeeper. Ferdinando died 1702/3 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH, at 63 years of age.(2)

He married Mary Moses bef 1 Mar 1664.(3) date of father's deed to Ferdinando Huff (Mary Moses is #10601.)

Mary was born 1645 in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH.(4) age 36y in Oct 1681 Mary was the daughter of Sgt John Moses and Alice (Moses).

Mary died aft Oct 1681 in Arundel, York, ME.(5)

He resided in Cape Porpoise, Arundel, York, ME 1682, 1772.(6) Abstract from History of Kennebunkport by Bradbury, pp 90-91:

"*Ferdinando Huff kept a public house at Cape Porpoise in 1692. George Jeffery, probably of York, brought an action against him for debt in 1686. Mr. Huff lived where Clement Huff now does. He probably died before the town was deserted, as his name does not appear on the town records after 1686. It is not known where he came from, or when he settled in this town. Thomas, who was his son, came from Portsmouth when the town was resettled in 1714."

"*The name is said originally to have been Hough. There was an Atherton Hough who came to New England in 1633, in company with Rev. John Cotton and settled in Boston. He was chosen an assistant in 1635, and a representative in 1637; and died Sep. 11, 1650. There is no evidence, however, that the families in this town descended from him. Mr. Huff's name was sometimes, on the county records, spelt Hoffe, sometimes Huffe, and sometimes Offe. On the town records his name was written 'fardeynandey Off.'"

Occupation: ordinary keeper 1683 in Cape Porpoise, Arundel, York, ME.(7) He resided in Portsmouth, Rockingham, NH 1693.(8) Abstract from Hough and Huff Families of the US by Granville W. Hough, 1:212, 219:

Atherton Hough of Boston, Lincolnshire, arrived with his wife Elizabeth in the MA colony on 4 Sep 1633. Through son Samuel they had descendants, most of whom stayed in New England for several generations. Elizabeth d 14 Oct 1643 and Atherton m Susannah Kimball bef 1646. She is believed to be the mother of Ferdinando Huff, who later showed up in Maine history. Atherton d 11 Sep 1650 and Susannah abt 1651. Several generations later, a Capt Atherton Hough lived in Boston where he was recorded in Boyles Journal in 1760, 1765, and as dying in 1771.

Ferdinando Huff is alleged to be the s/o immigrant Atherton Hough of Boston, MA; however this may not be true. He was at Cape Propoise in what is now Maine by 1677. One child, Thomas, can be traced to Ferdinando. Thomas, b 1675, m Sarah Ferris and had George, Thomas (1703), Joanna (1706), Sarah (1708), James, Charles, John, Joseph, and Mary.

Abstract from Desc of Thomas Brewer by Erickson, pp 449-450:

Ferdinando1 Huff was born about 1641. He was of Portsmouth, NH, married to Mary2 Moses, who was born about 1645, daughter of John1 and Alice (?) Moses. They were married before 1 March 1664/5, when Mary witnessed her father's deed to son-in-law Joseph Walker, partly "in consideration of a little cornfield of Joseph Walker's which now doth belong to Ferdinando Huff." He was aged 41 and she 36+ in October 1681. ...

... On 17 March 1671, Ferdinando Huff was of Sandy Beach, but had been in Cape Porpoise long enough to be elected Selectman there 7 December 1672. He purchased half of Batson's Neck in 1674, and was haying there in September of 1677, but was in Portsmouth by 3 June 1678. In October 1681, Ferdinando and Mary lived in John Sherburne's house and had charge of Henry Sherburne's mute daughter. At Cape Porpoise again, he had license for ordination 29 May 1683, and December of that year had his taxes abated in Portsmouth. He was sued in York Court in 1685/6, but there is no evidence that he was there again after his second return to Portsmouth, where he was living in 1693. He was taxed 16 May 1701 at Little Harbor, where he was living in August 1702.

Child, the only one proven: Thomas2 Huff, born ca 1675; married Grace Ferris.

Abstract from NEHGS Register,116:176-186 (July 1962) for The James Huff Family of Arundel, Maine by Mrs. E. Harris Dickinson and Frederick C. Warner, both of North Amherst, Mass.

James Huff was the son of Thomas(2) and Grace (Ferris) Huff and grandson of Ferdinando(1) and Mary (Moses) Huff. Ferdinando(1) Huff was one of the early settlers of Cape Porpoise in Arundel, where he was a selectman in 1672 and was licensed to keep an ordinary in 1683. In 1693 he was living in Portsmouth, N.H. His son, Thomas(2) attempted to settle in Cape Porpoise, but was living at Spruce Creek, Kittery, Maine, in 1708-9 while the Cape Porpoise settlement was abandoned. He had returned to Cape Porpoise by 1715 and was a Constable there in 1719. In April 1752, when 77 years old, he testified about the place as it was in 1703 [S. Noyes, C.T. Libby and W.G. Davis, Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire, 1936, p. 355].

Abstract from MMF by Davis, 2:633:

" ...iii Mary, b. in 1645; m. Ferdinando Huff. This marriage is reasonably deduced from the fact that Huff was already in possession of Moses land in 1664/5 when John Moses was making conveyances to his other sons-in-law. The Huffs lived alternately at Sagamore Creek and at Batson's Neck at Cape Porpoise, one-half of which Huff bought in 1674. On Oct 18, 1681, Ferdinando Huff, aged 41, and Mary, his wife, aged 36, testified that they were then living in Portsmouth in a house that had been John Sherburne's and that they had the care of Henry Sherburne's deaf and dumb daughter Rebecca. Both Huff's first and last names gave the scribes great scope - he is recorded as "ffer Ohf," "Fardi Hoof," "Andy Huff" and "Nandy Hoofe." Ferdinando Huff operated an ordinary (inn) at Cape Porpoise in 1683; was in Portsmouth, NH in 1693; Cape Porpoise, ME 1682 and 1772; Little Harbor, ME in 1701and 1702; Batson's Neck, ME 1674.

In October 1681 he was 41 and wife Mary Moses was 36

Abstract from Hough/Huff Families by G. W. Hough, p 7:

"Ferdinando Huff of Portsmouth (1640-1702) md Mary Moses before 1664/65. In Oct. 1681 he was 41, she 36. He was at Cape Porpus in 1772, Batson's Neck in 1674, operated an ordinary in 1683 at Cape Porpus, was sued in York Court in 1685/6, and lived in Portsmouth in 1693.
