This is a rough construction of one Atherton coat of arms. (See next paragraph for descriptions of various uses.) If anyone has a pretty GIF or JPEG version of the basic shield or the full arms (with helmet, crest, and motto scroll) that I could use here, please mail it to me.

• Arms used by Gen. Humphrey Atherton: Shield of red, with three silver sparrow hawks, two above one. On crest, a hawk with gold bells on perch.

• Arms used by Athertons of Atherton Hall (England): Same shield as above, but sparrow hawks said to have gold beaks and bells. On crest, a blue swan with a gold coronet around its neck.

• The arms for the town of Atherton in Lancashire, England.
