Fort Griswold State Park

Fort Griswold State Park

A monument was built in 1830 at Fort Griswold in memory of those who gave their lives and became a state park in 1902. The Ebenezer Avery house was moved from its original location on nearby Thames Street in 1971 to its present location on the park grounds, west of the fort and is open to the public.

A marble tablet containing the names of those killed was originally built into the masonry of the side of the monument, on the south side facing the fort but many years later it was removed to the inside of the structure.

Those members of the Avery family who died at Fort Griswold were: Elijah, Ebenezer, Solomon, Jasper, Elisha, Daniel, David, Christopher, and Thomas Avery.

Those wounded were: Lieut. Parke Avery, Jr. lost one eye
Ensign Ebenezer Avery, in the head
Amos Avery, in the hand
Prisoners carried off: Sergeant Rufus Avery, Caleb Avery, Peter Avery
