AVERY POINT - Groton, Connecticut
The Coast Guard Training Station was established during World
War II at Avery Point on the former Morton Plant estate. The
philanthropist's huge stone mansion was converted into an administration
building; barracks and classrooms were erected. The mansion's
30 x 70 foot music room, finished in handcarved woodwork from
Italy, served as the chapel until gutted by fire in 1963. When
the Avery Point installation was rechristened the Coast Guard
Training Center in 1964, ten basic schools were accommodating
2500 students with courses ranging from oceanography to cooking.
From these headquarters, also, the Coast Guard Institute sent
correspondence to the Service's personnel.
