Descendants of Christopher Butler (835)
Note: the word "county" is omitted after all county names
herein.
Generation One
1. Christopher1
BUTLER (835); m. Honor (--?--) (836), his 1st; b. 1800 NC; m. Lavinia (--?--)
(840) 14 Oct 1855 Carroll, TN; 2nd for both.
Honor (--?--) (836) was born in 1795 NC.
Children of Christopher1 Butler (835) and Honor (--?--)
(836) were as follows:
i. Tilmon S.2 (838); b. 1820
NC; m. Martha Jerusha Medearis (301), daughter of Benjamin Whitehead Hicks
Medearis (315) and Elizabeth Grady (316), 1 Feb 1850 Carroll, TN. The origin of the given name Tilmon is not known. It is sometimes spelled Tillman, however, and it should be noted that Tillman families are found in Montgomery Co. NC where the Butlers lived before coming to TN.
ii. William Spencer (837); b. 1833 TN. He may be the W. S. Butler who mar. Mary Jane Jordan 23 Oct 1856 in Benton Co. TN.
Lavinia (--?--) (840) was born in 1810 NC. She married first Jack Sedberry
(350) before 1829, by whom she had several children before he died prior to 1850; in the 1850 census of Carroll Co. TN Lavinia "Viney" was enumerated with the children Miles, Catherine, Mary A., Susan, and Elizabeth in the household of Jordan Sadburry (Sedberry), possibly her son. There were no known children of Christopher1 Butler
(835) and Lavinia (--?--) (840).
Christopher Butler is enumerated on p. 71 of the 1840 census of Carroll Co. TN as Christopher Butler: 0200101-0011001. This indicates (but does not prove) that Christopher and Honor had at least 5 children, 3 sons and 2 daughters. A possible daughter of Christopher and Honor is a Mary H. Butler born ca. 1828 TN, which corresponds with the age of the youngest female in the 1840 enumeration. This Mary H. Butler mar. Joel Bugg Medearis 27 Oct 1848 in Carroll Co. TN; Joel Bugg Medearis was a brother of the Martha Jerusha Medearis noted above. Although the parents of this Mary H. Butler are unknown, she and husband Joel Medearis and fam. are enum. next to Christopher Butler in the 1860 census of Carroll Co. TN. However, this is the 18th dist. where there are many Butlers, so proximity of two families in the census does not necessarily mean that they are closely related.
