Generation One

1Elias1 Butler was born circa 1758. He married Sarah (--?--), circa 1778. He died circa Feb 1838 Carroll, TN. 1,2

Quick links to children:  sons - James M., John, Elias, Neely, Reuben, and Joshua; daus.- Mary, Judith, Elizabeth , and Sarah.

Elias Butler left a will on 6 Mar 1836 Carroll, TN (prov. Feb 1838; wife Sarah; sons John, James M., Elias, Neally, and Joshua; daus. Mary Queen, Judah Boyd, Elizabeth McAuly; gdaus. Susanah, Lucy, and Sarah, daus. of deceased son Reuben; exctrs. sons Joshua and Neally, wit. Isaac Kirby and Thomas Butler).3 .  The surname of Sarah, wife of Elias, is said by some researchers to be Thompson and by others to be Starke, a daughter of James Starke and Mary Elizabeth Franklin, but no proof of this has yet come to light; the names of her parents may have been synthesized from names of Elias Butler's children, rather than having any basis in fact.  Any information which might identify her surname or parents with certainty would be most welcome.

Elias Butler served in the Revolutionary War in 1780. 10 different parcels of land totalling 1190 A. located in Montgomery, NC, between 1779 and 1801 were granted to Elias Butler, but it may not be the same Elias Butler in all cases2. A Butler Mill is found on a Montgomery Co. NC map of 1780; this mill is located on Rock Creek about a mile above its confluence with Little R. and is thought to have belonged to Elias Butler. By 1792, maps show another mill a short distance downstream from the earlier 1780 mill location in Montgomery, NC.

On 4 Jan 1793, an Elias Butler deeded 100 A. on Deep Creek in Duplin Co. NC to Francis Jordan, which land was granted by patent to Christopher Butler in 1786 and became the property of Elias Butler, he being the heir-at-law. The deed was witnessed by Thomas Butler and Joseph Deaton and recorded in Montgomery Co. NC; some sources consider this proof that Elias Butler of Carroll Co. TN is the son of a Christopher Butler, but if the original record says no more than the above, it does not provide definite proof of such a relationship; in fact, the Elias Butler mentioned in this 1793 deed is probably not the Elias Butler who moved to Carroll Co. TN.  Review of this and other land records was used by Hon. Edward Butler to help distinguish between the Elias Butler who moved to Carroll Co. TN and another Elias Butler who moved to Rutherford Co. TN.2  Because both Elias Butlers apparently lived in Montgomery Co. NC, care must be taken in basing family relationships on records from that area.  Also, Wayne Beeler says Lucy Butler who mar. Daniel Hicks is a sister of Elias, s. of Christopher; no proof of this has been provided to date.

Children of Elias1 Butler and Sarah Starke? were as follows:

Generation Two

2James M.2 Butler (Elias1) (middle name Moore or Monroe?) was born circa 1780 NC. He married Cynthia Bennett, daughter of John Calvin Bennett and Mary Frances Irvin, circa 1802 (he and Cynthia had 8 ch. according to Jean Franklin [email protected]; however, no record of this mar. is available). He married Susannah Bennett, daughter of John Calvin Bennett and Mary Frances Irvin, circa 1820 (he and Susannah had 6 ch., according to Jean Franklin [email protected]; no record of this mar. is available).   James Butler may have had only one mar., to Susannah (her surname probably Spencer, not Bennett); note the discussion below.  Also, most researchers show two different James Butlers in Carroll Co. TN, both born about 1780 and both with families (click here to see the report on the other James Butler), but it is also possible that these two James Butlers are the same person and that the two families ought to be combined; note the discussion below.

Census data:  in the 1830 census, one James Butler is enumerated in Carroll Co. TN (James Butler 2022001-2100201), while a James M. Butler is enumerated in Montgomery Co. NC (James M. Butler 0111101-1004101, slaves 001-01, free colored 02-0 ). In the 1840 census of Carroll Co. TN (p. 76) we find: James Butler 00200001-01120001; assuming that this is James, the son of Elias Butler, then the following names can be matched to this data: 002 (Brantly, Clark) 00001 (James)-01 (Louisa) 1 (Sarah) 2 (unk. daus.?) 0001 (Susannah); note that this is the only James Butler enum. in Carroll Co. in 1840, except for James P. Butler 00001-20001, a much younger unknown person, prob. the nephew of Phoebe Butler mentioned in her 1835 will (Phoebe Butler is also an unknown person, although there is a possibility that she is the wife of John Butler, son of Elias - even so, the identity of James P. remains unknown)). In the 1850 census of Carroll Co. TN (dist. 15, no. 1741) we find James Butler 66 NC, Susannah 62 NC, Sarah A. 20 TN, Louisa 17 TN, with Brantly S. Butler 22 NC and family at house no. 1742; in the 1850 census of Montgomery Co. NC, the only Butler family enumerated in the county is the William Butler who mar. Terah Bruton. In the 1860 census of Carroll Co. TN (dist. 16, no. 212) we find James Butler 80 NC, Susan 80 NC (no. 211 is Marvel Butler 38 TN and fam).  Note that in the 1860 census of Carroll Co. TN, the ages of James and Susannah are both 80, in better agreement with 1830 and 1840 censuses; however, it is also possible that the couple enum. in 1860 could be different persons than in those enum. in 1850.

If the same James Butler, son of Elias, is enum. in both 1830 and 1840 censuses of Carroll Co. TN (and in fact only one James Butler is enum. there in each of those years), then a case can be made for there being only one James Butler (son of Elias?) in Carroll Co. TN rather than two, as the census data matches what we would get by combining the two supposedly different James Butler families into one, just as well as by assuming them to be separate (though the match is not perfect in either case). That is, the 1840 census can be matched to the 1850 census of Carroll Co. TN except for two unidentified females b. 1820-25, as noted above; and the 1830 census 2022001-2100201 would be matched as 2 (Brantly, Clark) 02 (Reuben, Marvel) 2 (Elias B., Eli H.) 001 (James) - 2(Sarah, unk.) 1 (unk.) 002 (Sarah E., Cynthia) 01 (Susannah); having two daughters named Sarah seems unlikely, but the full names are not completely known. The "other" James Butler's remaining sons are accounted for as follows:  Atlas J. could be the "A. L. Butler" 00001-00001 of the 1830 census, as he was mar. before 1830; Seymore Spencer is unaccounted for; and Wiley W. Butler, once thought to be another brother of Atlas J., Marvel, and Seymore, is instead a cousin, as stated by Atlas J. Butler in a post-Civil War claim submitted to the Southern Claims Commission. Wiley W. Butler may instead be enum. with the unknown Absolem Butler in 1830 (Absolem Butler: 0011001-0, with Wiley the male b. 1815-1820, and the male b. 1810-15 possibly Calvin J. Butler, who is otherwise unnaccounted for in the 1830 census). The difficulty in using census records alone in the definition of these various family groups is quite apparent, hence such definition can only be considered tentative. Additional clarifying data would be most welcome.

Note an unidentified James M. Butler, "Treasurer of the Public Buildings" of Montgomery Co. NC, certified on 28 Jun 1829 that a newly-built jail, along with recent repairs and improvements to the county courthouse made by E. Deberry, met contract specifications5; if this James M. Butler is the son of Elias, it indicates that James M. did not move to TN until after this 1829 date.  Note also that a James M. Butler is enumerated in the 1830 census of Montgomery Co. NC as noted above.  However, an unidentified James M. Butler signed a Nov 1838 petition in Montgomery Co. NC to form Stanly Co. from Montgomery Co. (others signing the 1838 petition include William Butler, prob. the William Butler who mar. Terah Bruton, and John Butler Sr. (unknown)); if this is the same James M. Butler who was in Montgomery Co. NC in 1829 and 1830, it could indicate that James M., son of Elias, did not move from Montgomery Co. NC to TN until after 1838 (as his father died in Carroll Co. TN about 1838, James M. may not have moved from NC until settlement of his father's estate). On the other hand, the person signing the 1838 petition in NC may be an entirely different (and currently unidentified) James M. Butler, since, as noted above, there is record of a James Butler in the 1830 census of Carroll Co. TN which matches known information concerning James M., son of Elias, well enough. Available birthplace data of the children of James M. Butler in the 1850 census of Carroll Co. TN  indicate that the family moved from NC to TN between 1828 and 1830, rather than later, and a deed in Carroll Co. TN seems to place James Butler there by 1836 (see below).  In addition, it appears that the Elias Butler who moved to Rutherford Co. TN also had a son James M. Butler.2

Although it is stated by most researchers that there were two different James Butlers in Carroll Co. TN (one the son of Elias, the other whose parents are not identified), there may only have been one.   The existence of the sisters Cynthia and Susannah Bennett as wives of James may be an error; that the surname of these two sisters was Bennett may simply be a guess based on James naming a son Elias Bennett Butler. The name of James M. Butler's first wife may have been thought to be Cynthia simply because Cynthia was the name of James M.'s second dau. (the first dau. Sarah being named for James' mother Sarah, the wife of Elias Butler). If we are to place any confidence in naming patterns in determining the identity of parents or as proof of certain relationships (and if James really did mar. two sisters Cynthia and Susannah rather than only one woman named Susannah), it would seem just as likely that the surname of his wife or wives would be Spencer rather than Bennett, based on the names of sons Clark S. and Brantly S., given names which also appear in the William Spencer family of Montgomery Co. NC. A 21 Mar 1836 deed in Carroll Co. TN tends to establish that one James Butler did have a wife Susannah Spencer; the deed reads as follows: "This is to certify that I have received from George Callicotte, $250.00 - for a certain Negro boy named Solomon and his mother by name of Chaney given to me by will or deed of gift by Hannah Spencer my mother-in-law and my mother" and is signed by James Butler and Susannah (x, her mark) Butler, witnessed by Clark Spencer and John Butler; the Hannah Spencer mentioned here is believed to be the Hannah Sugg who mar. William Spencer, but Hannah (Sugg) Spencer's original will, referred to in this deed, has not come to hand.  Unfortunately, another son of Hannah (Sugg) Spencer was the person who set fire to the Montgomery Co. NC courthouse in 1843, destroying records which would have helped greatly in unravelling these families.

Children of James M.2 Butler and Cynthia Bennett were as follows (this listing of ch. is suspect, as noted):

Children of James M.2 Butler and Susannah Bennett were as follows: 3John F.2 Butler (Elias1) (middle name Franklin?) was born circa 1782 and died in 1876.  He married Phoebe Adeline Windsor (her surname is sometimes seen as Solomons (Solomon would be more likely); no proof of this mar. has been found. It is not certain that "Phoebe Adeline Windsor" or "Phoebe Adeline Windsor Solomons" actually existed. Although a Phoebe Butler left a will dated 1835 in Carroll Co., it was proven in Apr 1840 prior to the census that year; since the 1840 census for John Butler shows a female of the age to be John's wife and since John is not known to have remarried (nor is the death date of any wife even known), it is not likely that Phoebe the legator was the wife of John. The sole heir in this Phoebe Butler's will was a James P. Butler, so far an unknown person; neither John Butler nor any children were mentioned, another fact making it less likely that this Phoebe Butler was connected to John Butler (although it may also reflect Phoebe's possible dissatisfaction with her immediate family). Robert Allen reports that a month after this Phoebe died, "the court gave permission to have her body exhumed, the implication being that she had died under suspicious circumstances. Nothing further is said of the matter in the court records").

Some sources include children Joshua M., John (or John Calvin), and Thomas E., but there is no specific evidence for any of these 3, particularly for the supposed son John Calvin Butler. The details associated with the non-existent person John Calvin Butler actually apply loosely to a real person named Calvin J. Butler; however, no proof of the identity of the parents of Calvin J. Butler has ever come to light. Around 1980, researcher Allen Pendergraft incorrectly concluded that Calvin J. Butler was actually named John Calvin Butler; Mr. Pendergraft also moved Calvin's birthdate several years back in time to account for non-existent marriages erroneously attributed to Calvin. Mr. Pendergraft was fond of using rather strict naming rules, which he had devised, to make tentative guesses concerning the names of unknown parents and grandparents (using the given names of children); occasionally he also "corrected" the names of persons who, so he believed, went by their middle names rather than their first names. For example, he occasionally theorized that someone known in adulthood as "Henry John Smith" might have actually been named "John Henry Smith", but chose to go by his middle name Henry in order to avoid being confused with other persons named John Smith. Or, if the oldest son in a family were named Henry John Smith, Mr. Pendergraft would tentatively note on the working copies of his family group sheets that the mother's surname was John until he found other information to the contrary. Unfortunately, copies of his working family group sheets, which he freely made available to other researchers and which often contained such unproven suppositions, are in several libraries around the country and have been incorporated into the records of numerous genealogists and also into several published works, with the result that his suppositions are now considered "facts". In the specific case of Calvin J. Butler, there is no record that Calvin ever went by anything other than Calvin, Calvin J., or C. J. Butler; nowhere is he called John, and in fact it is more likely that his middle name is Jones and his namesake the famous NC general and land owner Calvin Jones (sons in many families located in NC, TN, and elsewhere were named after Calvin Jones and his brother Atlas Jones; instances of this in the American South are nearly as numerous as those where sons are named after beloved divines such as Lorenzo Dow, James O'Kelly, John Calvin, or Martin Luther). At best, Mr. Pendergraft's ad-hoc naming rules could perhaps be used to suggest avenues for further research, but their results cannot be accepted as proof of anything. Anyone using such data should independently verify all information before sharing their own research with others, especially through formal publication.

Evidence that Wm. L., Martha W., and Judith J. were ch. of John is not available. The 1830 census of Montgomery Co. NC (not Carroll Co. TN) lists a John Butler 11100001-0112101; assuming that son William L. is already living separately, this listing can account for Martha W. and Judith but leaves the other 3 males and 4 females unidentified. Note that the only 1830 census listing for a John Butler in Carroll Co. TN is 00001-100100001, which doesn't match the age of John, son of Elias. The listing for John Butler in the 1840 census of Carroll Co. is 00110001-00010001, agreeing with approx. birthyear of 1782 and indicates a wife still living and possibly 3 ch. b. after 1820, also currently unidentified, bringing the total of unidentified children associated with John Butler to 6; some of those enumerated may be grandchildren or other persons, however. Also, it is possible that John Butler was estranged from his children later in life, as he is living with other Butler families in 1850 and 1860, so those later censuses provide no additional information concerning his family. He apparently left no will.

More census discussion:  John Butler may have appeared on the census of 1810  in Montgomery, NC (p. 575: J. Butler 30010-10010; although no John Butler is explicitly listed in this county in 1810, this J. Butler may be John Butler, as he is listed relatively close to (on the page before) E. Butler 11101-10201, supposed to be John's father Elias Butler). Also note a John Butler 1110001-0112101, no slaves, in 1830 census of Montgomery Co. NC, which agrees with the 1840 census in Carroll Co. TN in several respects and so could tentatively considered to be the same family. As noted above, a John Butler is enumerated in Carroll Co. TN in 1830 (John Butler 00001-100100001), but this data doesn't match the age of John, son of Elias, or his 'known' family and this John Butler is so far unidentified. Other evidence, such as the mar. location for his dau. Martha and birthplaces of Martha's children, suggests that John Butler did not leave the Montgomery Co. NC area until just prior to 1840, perhaps after his fathers's 1838 death or estate settlement in Carroll Co. TN; John's brother James may also have not left NC until about this time. Additional information such as land records should be analyzed to better determine when they moved and to minimize confusion between these families and others in Carroll Co. TN and Montgomery Co. NC. He appeared on the census of 1840 Carroll, TN (p. 74: John Butler 00110001-00010001). He was enumerated with Joshua Butler in 1850 Carroll, TN, where his age was recorded as 67.  In 1860 he was age 74 (enum. with Jackson Jones, who married Elizabeth Bruton Butler).

Children of John F.2 Butler and Phoebe Adeline Windsor all b.NC, were as follows:

4Mary2 Butler (Elias1); (middle name may be Catherine) married Reuben Queen. She was born circa 1789. She died in 1859.

She and Reuben Queen appeared on the census of 1830 Carroll, TN (p. 158: Reuben Queen 0110001-3012001).

Children of Mary2 Butler and Reuben Queen were as follows:

5Judith2 Butler (Elias1) was buried unk. family cem. near Dollar,, Carroll, TN. She married John K. Boyd, son of John (or Robert?) Boyd and (--?--) unk. She was born circa 1791 NC. She died after 1870, when she was age 79 enumerated with "Zianna" (i.e., Dianna) Rogers age 53, 9th dist. Carroll Co TN.  Her given name may be Judah, as stated in her father's will.

Census of 1850 Carroll Co. TN (dist. 14, no. 1638: John Boyd 60 NC, Judith 59 NC, Joshua C. 24 NC, Martha J. 22 TN, Sarah A. 3 TN, William T. 1 TN). Census of 1860 Carroll Co. TN (1860, dist. 14, no. 560: John Boyd 70 NC, Judith 70 NC, enum. with Joshua Boyd 36 NC, Martha 33 TN, Sarah 12 TN, William 11 TN, Elisha 10 TN, Elizabeth 9 TN, Mary 6 TN, John 5 TN, Amanda 4 TN, Martha 2 TN, Susan 6/12 TN). Census of 1870 Carroll Co. TN (9th distr., no. 12: Zianna (Dianna) Rogers age 53 hd. of household, ch. Enos 16 and Sarah 11; Judith (Butler) Boyd age 79 indwelling along with Joel Butler (s. of Calvin) age 24 and his wife Frances Rogers age 19; Dianna Rogers is Judith's dau. Dianna Boyd who mar. Elisha Rogers).

Children of Judith2 Butler and John K. Boyd were as follows:

6Mary Elizabeth2 Butler (Elias1married William M. McAuley, son of Angus McAuley and Margaret McLeod. She was born in 1791.  She may have had a twin sister Mary Catherine, and possibly an older sister Mary Catherine who d. young.2

Children of Mary Elizabeth2 Butler and William M. McAuley were as follows:

7Neely2 Butler (Elias1married Amy (or Anna) Arina Ozier, daughter of Louis Ozier Jr. and Susannah Martin. He was born in 1796 NC (his age is recorded as 54 in 1850, and 80 in 1870). He died in 1880 Stone, MO.

He was also known as Nathaniel Cornelius Butler, but the name Nathaniel Cornelius is doubtful as there are no known records in which Neely Butler's given name is recorded as Nathaniel or Cornelius. Because Neely can be a nickname for both Nathaniel and Cornelius, it is thought that someone simply guessed that Neely's name might be one or the other; it is unlikely that either apply, much less both. It is most likely Neely after the Neely family, members of which lived in Rowan Co. NC (also Andrew Neely m. Agnes Stewart 3 Dec 1799 Guilford Co. NC and was in Carroll Co. TN bef. 1830). The name is also see as Neeley/Nealy/Nealey. He appeared on the census of 1840 Carroll Co. AR (Prairie tsp.: Neeley Butler 2101201 - 1011001). He appeared on the census of 1850 Prairie tsp.,, Carroll, AR. He appeared on the census of 1860 Hickory tsp.,, Carroll, AR. He and Wilson Sutton Butler appeared on the census of 1870 James tsp.,, Stone, MO (1870: Wilson's sons Elbert N. and James L. are next door).

The origin of Amy Arina Ozier's given name is not known. Several alternate spellings are seen in period records. It is possible that it is a variant of a Dutch name - Annetje Arians Van Amsterdam (Annetje, dau. of Arian from Amsterdam) was a name mentioned by a Robert A. Jackson in a Rootsweb Review article ca. July 2000; he says such a person was wife of a Jacob Jansen Van Etten, a Dutchman who came to America ca. 1650. Mr. Jackson gave one alternate spelling as Annetie Ariaans. Anna or Anny (i.e., Annetie) is sometimes misread as Amy. Variations of this given name are found in a number of families in the American South, perhaps as a result of the Van Etten (Vaneaton) family migrating there. However, no relationship between the Ozier or Martin families and the Van Etten family is currently known.

Amy Arina Ozier was b. 27 Sep 1799 NC, the daughter of Louis Ozier Jr. (b. 7 Jun 1753 London, ENG, d. 13 Nov 1820 Charleston, SC) and Susannah Martin (b. 1764, d. 14 Nov 1827 Charleston, SC) who were mar. 2 Oct 1783. Louis Ozier Jr. was the son of Louis Ozier Sr. (b. 17 Jul 1726, Moncoutant, Lower Poitou, France, d. 8 Oct 1780 Charleston, SC) and Catherine Creuze (b. 12 Dec 1732, d. 17 Jul 1808, Hackney, Middlesex, England) who were mar. 15 Jul 1751 at St. John's Church, Hackney, London, England. The surname Ozier was earlier spelled Ogier and perhaps Auget. The Louis Ozier Sr. family emigrated from England to America Feb 1774; they were noted as passengers on the ship Union (London to North Carolina) as follows: Lewis Ogier 47, London, weaver, wife Catherine 40, children Thomas 20 silk weaver, Lewis 19 silk weaver, Catherine 16 spinster, Lucy 13 spinster, Charlotte 9 spinster, John 8 schoolboy, Mary 6 spinster, Peter 5 schoolboy; also on board were John Machlin/Macklin 24, Oxford (to settle), gentleman, wife Mary 23; and David Wilson 38, London, merchant (on business). Also note a William Wilson 38, planter, London arrived on the ship Carolina during Jan 1774 with George Ogier 15, London, planter, who may have also been another son or other relative of Louis Ogier Sr.

Children of Neely2 Butler and Amy Arina Ozier were as follows:

8Reuben2 Butler (Elias1) was born in 1798. He married Susan (--?--) before 1817 (her 1st; 3 ch). He died before 1834.  Concerning his data of death:  the will of Elias Butler, written 6 Mar 1836, states that his son Reuben was deceased. Some sources give a death date of 1825 for this son of Elias, but this may be based on data associated with the Mary Butler who mar. 1st a Reuben Butler. The Reuben Butler who was the husband of this Mary Butler died 1825-1827, since by 1827 she had mar. her 2nd husband John Jordan, by whom she had 3 children known to have been born between 1827 and 1830. But it is not certain that this Reuben Butler is the son of Elias Butler, so we must use the Elias Butler will to set the bound on his son's death date, as well as the birth dates of 2 of his daus.

It is doubtful that Reuben, son of Elias, is the same person as Reuben, the first husband of Mary Butler who later married John Jordan, although from separate sources it is known that each had 3 daughters, the names of which are nearly identical. The daus. of Reuben, son of Elias, are identified in Elias' 1838 will in Carroll Co. TN; the will does not state where these grandchildren resided, so it would more likely be Carroll Co. TN where the will was written and filed, rather than Montgomery Co. NC. Susan Butler, said to be the widow of Reuben (son of Elias), maiden name unknown, mar. William Morris and moved to Barry Co. MO. after 1840, and her dau. Susan Butler mar. Turner Hale, while the other two daus. are so far unaccounted for.

The three daus. of the Reuben who mar. Mary Butler (dau. of Thomas and Mary Butler) are identified on p. 12 of the autobiography of Mary Butler's son Rev. F. M. Jordan, whose father was John Jordan who mar. ca 1825 Reuben Butler's widow Mary Butler; these three daus. of Reuben Butler and Mary Butler all married and lived in Montgomery Co. NC - Susan mar. Walter Alvis Jordan, Lucy mar. Hiram Allen, and Sarah mar. Lovin Richardson. John Jordan died in 1843 when his wife Mary was about 46; his widow Mary Jordan, stayed on in the Little River area of Montgomery Co. NC and later died in Orange Co. NC at the home of her son F. M. Jordan. This Mary Butler, widow of Reuben Butler and John Jordan, did not marry a William Morris and did not live in MO. William Morris and his wife Susan, widow of Reuben Butler (son of Elias) moved aft. 1840 from Carroll Co. TN to east side of Kings River, White River tsp. (near present Royale Point), Barry Co. MO; about 1852-53 they sold this property to her dau. Sarah (Butler) Hale and husband Turner Hale. The key to this affair might be found in such TN or MO records; perhaps the 'Susan Butler' who mar. William Morris was one of the daus. of Reuben Butler, rather than his widow. However, this still requires that a dau. of Reuben Butler be in Carroll Co. TN, and birthdates of William Morris' ch. by 'Susan Butler' require that she be born 1815 or earlier.

Note the following concerning a Reuben Butler in VA records (Henley's Index), which might eventually be of use in sorting out various Reuben Butlers:

Children of Reuben2 Butler and Susan (--?--) were as follows:

9Joshua Daniel2 Butler (Elias1) was buried Oak Grove Bapt. ch. cem.,, Carroll, TN. He married Mary Drucilla Blount, daughter of Isaac Blount and Lovey Jones. He was born on 21 Mar 1802 NC. He died on 6 Nov 1878 Carroll, TN, at age 76.

Some say this Joshua is the son of John F., son of Elias. Further confusion is added since Joshua, son of Elias, may have been called Daniel Butler (his middle name) rather than Joshua in some records. Both a Daniel and a Joshua are in both 1830 and 1840 censuses of Carroll Co. TN; the census for Joshua in both cases matches the Joshua Butler who mar. Drucilla Blount, while the identity of the Daniel Butler in 1830 and 1840 remains unknown.

Children of Joshua Daniel2 Butler and Mary Drucilla Blount were as follows:

10Sarah2 Butler (Elias1) was buried Oak Grove Bapt. ch. cem.,, Carroll, TN (apparently neither of her husbands is bur. in Oak Grove cem., or record of it is lost). She was born on 1 Sep 1804 NC. She married Thomas R. Boyd, son of John (or Robert?) Boyd and (--?--) unk, on 21 Sep 1822 (her 1st, 8 known ch.; mar. date on her tombstone, but needs to be verified, since other sources give it as 21 Feb 1822). She married James Bobbitt, son of William Bobbitt and Susannah James, on 11 Jun 1856 Carroll, TN (2nd for both, no known ch.; mar. date on her tombstone). She died on 9 Sep 1881 at age 77.

She and James Bobbitt appeared on the census of 1860 Carroll, TN (1860, dist. 18, no. 481: James Bobbitt 72 NC, Sarah Bobbitt 54 NC, Sarah Boyd 16 TN, Robert T. Boyd 15 TN; no. 482 is Alfred Bobbitt and fam).

Children of Sarah2 Butler and Thomas R. Boyd all b. TN, were as follows:

There were no children of Sarah2 Butler and James Bobbitt.

Generation Three

11Cynthia3 Butler (James2, Elias1married Joshua Brumbelow (6 ch. in 1840, additional 2 in 1830). She was born circa 1812 SC. She died circa 1852 AR (another source says d. 1853).

She and Joshua Brumbelow appeared on the census of 1850 Hempstead, AR (Bodcan tsp., no. 50: Joshua Brumbelow 65 NC, Cynthia 38 SC, and ch. listed below). She 1850 census of AR gives her birthplace as SC (note that no other Butler in the 18th dist. of Carroll Co. TN was born in SC, but many people in the 8th dist. were from SC). Identity of her parents is questionable - data of Carl D. Ward says Cynthia (mar. Joshua Brumbelow) is a sibling of the SC Butlers in Carroll Co. TN - i.e., John b. 1798, William b. 1800, Mary b. Apr 1802, Sarah b. Oct 1808, Thos. Christopher b. 1810 (mar. 1st Margaret Mary Brumbelow), Horatio b. 16 Dec 1815, and James C. b. 1820, all ch. of John Butler b. ca. 1770 and Mary Shoats b. ca. 1770. Carl Ward says the parents John and Mary Butler both d. in Carroll Co. TN, John ca. 1830 and Mary ca. 1840; several of their children lived in the 8th dist. of Carroll Co. TN and later moved to Hempstead Co. AR, while no Butlers from the 18th dist. are known to have moved to that county. I believe that Cynthia has been mistakenly listed as a child of James Butler, son of Elias; accordingly, I have changed my study database and also included Cynthia Butler in the report on Butlers born in South Carolina added to this site after the last revision of this Elias Butler report. When this report on Elias Butler undergoes its next major revision, Cynthia will be only be mentioned in a note.

Children of Cynthia3 Butler and Joshua Brumbelow all b. TN, were as follows:

12Elias Bennett3 Butler (James2, Elias1) died MS (may have d. in Tate or Marshall Co. MS). He was born on 13 Jan 1813 Montgomery, NC. He married Eliza Gaston on 17 Sep 1840 Marshall, MS (at least 10 ch).9

He may have an earlier mar. to Julie Ann _?_, by whom he may have had 4 ch. James b. 1831, M. (male) b. 1832, Cynthia b. 18334, and Elias b. 1838; however, the name Julie Ann may be a guess by Allen Pendergraft based on the name of the first dau. born to Elias' (2nd?) wife Eliza. Yates vol. 4 p. 21 says m. 1840 Eliza Gustine JORDAN b. 1821; she may have mar. 1st Enoch Jordan, although this may be a guess by Allen Pendergraft based on the name of the first son born to Elias and Eliza. Some birthdates of children may be inaccurate as to day or month - sources (Allen Pendergraft, Kathy Whitmire, R. Allen) do not agree, and this family is poorly documented.10 He and Eliza Gaston appeared on the census of 10 Nov 1850 Marshall, MS (1850, southern div., no. 717: E. B. Butler 37 NC, Eliza 28 NC, William G. 7 MS, Julia Ann 5 MS, E. Z. T. 2 MS, James M. 3/12 MS; also, a J. C. Butler 28 NC and fam. are at no. 790).

Children of Elias Bennett3 Butler and Eliza Gaston were as follows:

13Eli Horatio3 Butler (James2, Elias1) was born circa 1815 NC. He and Susan M. Messer obtained a marriage license on 10 Jan 1839 Carroll, TN.7 He married Caroline Ross on 24 Sep 1877 Carroll, TN (his 2nd).13,14 He died in 1887.

He may have also had a dau. Catherine b. ca. 1854.

Children of Eli Horatio3 Butler and Susan M. Messer were as follows:

Children of Eli Horatio3 Butler and Missouri Messer were: There were no children of Eli Horatio3 Butler and Caroline Ross.

14Clark Spencer3 Butler (James2, Elias1) was buried Tumbling Creek Bapt. ch. cem., Gleason, Weakley, TN (his 2nd wife Martha's death cert. states she was bur. New Hope cem., but no markers for either person are found in either cem). He was born on 4 Apr 1825 NC. He married Sarah Park, daughter of Humphrey Park and Nancy Orr, on 19 Jan 1848 Carroll, TN (his 1st, 1 known ch.; mar. by David Quillen, M. G).7,15 He married Martha Jane Atkins, daughter of Josiah R. Atkins and Rebecca Jones, on 21 Dec 1868 Weakley, TN (his 2nd, 2 or 3 ch.; mar. by Thos. W. Felts M.G).16,15 He died on 5 Oct 1872 at age 47 (death date must be verified; the stone may say 1892, not 1872 - note that Martha Butler is listed in 1880 census with a boy James B. Butler age 2, a possible son).

He served in the Civil War.  Note that there are two people named Clark S. Butler - one d. in Mex. War (or was this actually Seymour Spencer Butler, known to have died in Mex. War?).

He was ordained in Apr 1853 (Clark S. Butler a Bapt. minister, ordained Apr 1853; note a Rev. C. S. Butler, identity unknown, preached the first sermon at Mt. Nebo Baptist Ch., Buena Vista, TN on 23 Apr 1834 (could the date be 1854?); however, J. W. Cearley was this church's first pastor). Clark S. Butler said to be a brother of Seymore Butler, son of James Butler (not James M., the son of Elias); one way for this to be true is for James Butler and James M. Butler (son of Elias) to be the same person. He and Martha Jane Atkins may also have son James B. Butler b. 1878 (in 1880 census with mother). He appeared on the census of 1850 Carroll, TN (1850, 16th dist., no. 1795: Clark S. Butler 25 NC, Sarah 20 TN, Mary E. 7/12, next to Humphrey Park). He appeared on the census of 1870 Weakley, TN (1870, 6th distr., P.O. Dresden: Clark S., 45, Martha J. 35, Mary A. 20).

Children of Clark Spencer3 Butler and Sarah Park were:

Children of Clark Spencer3 Butler and Martha Jane Atkins were as follows: 15Brantly S.3 Butler (James2, Elias1) was buried Tucker cem. near Westport,, Carroll, TN. He was born on 7 Dec 1827 NC. He married Susan A. Huffman on 20 Sep 1848 Carroll, TN (his 1st; 3 ch).7,17 He marriedMinerva A. Sharp on 6 Mar 1855 Carroll, TN (his 2nd, 6 ch.; mar. by Elder C. B. Smith).7,17 He died on 2 Feb 1873 Carroll, TN, at age 45.

Notes on given name: a William Brantley was st. senator from Chatham Co. NC 1804-05; also, Brantley is a given name found in the Spencer family. Also note that he and a Brantly Stevens have the same name; Brantly Stevens' grandmother was Lucy Butler, wife of Daniel Hicks.

Children of Brantly S.3 Butler and Susan A. Huffman were as follows:

Children of Brantly S.3 Butler and Minerva A. Sharp were as follows: 16Sarah A.3 Butler (James2, Elias1) was born on 8 Oct 1830 Montgomery, NC (however, 1850, 1860 censuses says b. TN). She married Duncan McMillan on 19 Dec 1850 Carroll, TN (5 ch. by 1860).7 She died on 4 Sep 1888 Carroll, TN, at age 57.

Another source says she is sister of Marvel Butler (and so of Atlas J. Butler); note she named a son Atlas J. McMillan (this is at best circumstantial evidence of a relationship with the family which included Marvel and Atlas Butler). If she is Marvel's sister, then the Sarah L. Butler who mar. Elijah Spoon is likely not the sister of Atlas (unlikely, but not impossible, that Atlas would have two adult sisters named Sarah).  This in turn makes it more likely that that Marvel Butler's first wife Emily Spoon and Elijah Spoon were sister and brother, which is accepted but not proven, and also is an explanation for the statement of Atlas J. Butler that Elijah Spoon was his brother-in-law.18  Note there is another family in the 1860 census of Carroll Co. TN which must not be confused with this one: Cullin D. McMullin and wife Sarah A. (Russell), who have ch. Hugh H., John G., James, Robert, and Eli.
Children of Sarah A.3 Butler and Duncan McMillan were as follows:

17Louisa J.3 Butler (James2, Elias1) was born in 1833 TN. She married Dr. Haywood F. Harris, son of Williamson Harris and Elizabeth Battle Perry, after 1860 (not sure).

Children of Louisa J.3 Butler and Dr. Haywood F. Harris were:

18William L.3 Butler (John2, Elias1) was buried Mt. Comfort cem.,, Carroll, TN (his wife is also said to be bur. there; his marker was said to be an uncut stone later removed by the cem. committee). He married Nancy (--?--). He was born circa 1800 NC. He died circa 1840.  It is not certain that his parents are correct as listed.  He and a William Lowe Butler, son of James Butler and Charity Lowe, are possibly confused in some records, since William Lowe Butler was willed land in Carroll Co. TN.

Children of William L.3 Butler and Nancy (--?--) were as follows:

19Martha W.3 Butler (John2, Elias1married James Sanders. She was born on 25 May 1814 NC. She died on 25 Jun 1883 at age 69.

She and James Sanders appeared on the census of 1850 Carroll, TN (1850, dist. 18, no. 2094: James Sanders 41 NC, Martha 36 NC, Jn. Thomas 16 NC, Furmon 13 NC, Benjamin A. 10 MS, John M. 7 TN, James B. 3 TN. Note William Culpeper Sanders is not listed although he was born Aug 1850 and the family was not enumerated until Dec 1850; this may be due to the midyear enum. cutoff date, or an error in the birthdate of WCS). She and James Sanders appeared on the census of 1860Carroll, TN (1860, dist 18, no. 507: Martha Saunders 40 NC (note her husb. d. 1854), John S. Parish obtained a marriage license on 7 Feb 1839 Carroll, TN (his 1st).7 She was buried on 6 Oct 1867.  Note that she and Claiborne J. Parish may have also had a dau. b. ca. 1840 as indicated by 1840 census of Carroll Co. TN (p. 74: Clement Parish 00001-10001, this may be Claiborne, as no Clement Parish is known).

He was born on 15 Feb 1821. He married Martha Jane Barber in 1847 (his 2nd; 11 or 12 ch.; the first ch. Butler 1907 Carroll Co. TN records - may be transcription error (year should be 1901?) or a later proceeding following the actual divorce. In Mar 1901 he apparently mar. 52Elizabeth3 Boyd (Sarah2Butler, Elias1married William Sanders (not completely sure her name is Boyd). She was born in 1829 TN.  Is the middle name of this Eliz. Boyd b. 1829 Diannah/Dinah?

It is possible that some researchers have confused this Williams Sanders b. 1815 with William Culpepper Sanders b. 1849, who mar. in 1869 an Eliz. D. Boyd b. 1844, this latter marriage taking place well after the births of the ch. listed below for Eliz. Boyd b. 1829.  Eliz. Boyd b. 1829 is 20 years older than William Culpepper Sanders, and was apparently already married to a different Wm. Sanders.  From these dates, the Eliz. D. Boyd who mar. Wm. C. Sanders is certainly a different Elizabeth (either Eliz. Boyd b. 1844, the dau. of Thomas Butler Boyd, or Eliz. Boyd b. 1851, the dau. of Joshua Boyd).  Need to check the 1870 census, which should show the age of Wm. C. Sanders' wife as approx. 19, not 41).  Some sources give her middle initial as D., but this may not be correct; it may have been assumed due to the 1869 marriage record between Wm. C. Saunders and Eliz. D. Boyd, but the Eliz. D. Boyd of the mar. record is likely not this Eliz. Boyd b. 1829 (who is enum. in the 1860 census with her husband William Sanders age 45), but the one b. 1851 (enum. with Joshua Boyd in the 1860 census). She and William Sanders appeared on the census of 1860 Carroll, TN (dist. 14, no 577: William Sanders 45 NC, Elizabeth 30 TN, Marcus 12 TN, Eli 9 TN, William 6 TN, Elias 2 TN).

Boyd; assuming Martha's birth was legitimate, then Wm. C. Sanders had an earlier mar. (there is no known record of an earlier mar.), or the birthyear of 1867 is wrong, or Martha is someone else's dau). He married Sarah Ann Boyd, daughter of Joshua C. Boyd and Martha Jane Butler, after Sep 1871 (said to be his 3rd wife, possibly 4 ch. or more, but may only be his 2nd wife; she should be listed in 1880/1900/1910 census as spouse of W. C. She died on 18 Mar 1956 Soper, Choctaw, OK, at age 87 (or d. 22 Mar).

Children of Mary Drucilla4 Butler and Dewitt Turner Jones all b. Dollar Hill, Carroll, TN, were as follows:

Allen lists 5 ch. not including a Priest).13 He died on 21 Jul 1916 at age 45.  He also went by the name of Bud.

Dewitt Clarkson has b. 20 Dec 1861 d. 2 Nov 1886; these dates don't agree with the tombstones (they may apply to a different child of Henry) - the birthdate conflicts with Lovey Ann's birthdate of 7 Aug 1861, and death date precedes his marriage in 1894 - a check of 1870/1880/1900 censuses will clarify.

Children of Franklin J.4 Butler and Elizabeth Lee McAuley were as follows:

He and Mollie Harriet Boyd R. Allen calls her both "Amanda _?_" and "Molly Boyd" and lists ch. Ethel, Letha, and Gertrude; a transcription of 1900 census of dist. 24 Carroll Co. gives E. L. Butler 48 TN NC NC, M. E. 40 TN TN TN, Ethel 19 f TN, Luther 12 m TN, Cleo 8 f TN. If "E. L." is actually Elbert Thomas and "M.
