Generation One

1. James1 BUTLER (760); m. Susannah Spencer (761); b. 1780.

Susannah SPENCER (761) was born in 1780. Susan Butler 81 enumerated with Atlas J. Butler (762) on the 1870 census of Carroll, TN; 16th distr., house no. 68,  ; if this is Atlas' mother Susannah Spencer (761), this age conflicts with her supposed birthdate of 1780 derived from previous censuses.

Although most researchers distinguish between this James Butler and James M. Butler, son of Elias Butler, it is possible that the two are actually the same person. For more, click here to see the report on the other James Butler and the discussion of this subject.

Note a 21 Mar 1836 deed in Carroll Co. TN which tends to establish that one James Butler did have a wife Susannah Spencer; the deed reads as follows: "This is to certify that I have received from George Callicotte, $250.00 - for a certain Negro boy named Solomon and his mother by name of Chaney given to me by will or deed of gift by Hannah Spencer my mother-in-law and my mother" and is signed by James Butler and Susannah (x, her mark) Butler, witnessed by Clark Spencer and John Butler; the Hannah Spencer mentioned here is believed to be the Hannah Sugg who mar. William Spencer, but Hannah (Sugg) Spencer's original will, referred to in this deed, has not come to hand. Clark Spencer who witnessed the deed is probably the son of Hannah (Sugg) Spencer who is believed to have been living in Madison Co. TN at the time, along with other members of the Spencer family; John Butler could be the son of Elias Butler, but this is not certain. Unfortunately, another son of Hannah (Sugg) Spencer was the person who set fire to the Montgomery Co. NC courthouse in Lawrenceville in Mar 1843, destroying records which would have helped greatly in unravelling these families.

Children of James1 Butler (760) and Susannah Spencer (761) were as follows:

Clark S. Butler is said to be a brother of Seymore Butler and son of this James Butler, but there is no known proof of this; James M. Butler, son of Elias, did have a son Clark S. Butler; If Clark is the brother of Seymore, James Butler and James M. Butler may be the same person (note also that Seymour Butler had a son Clark S.). If this matter could be clarified with period records, perhaps it could be determined whether or not James Butler of this report and James M. Butler, son of Elias, are the same person.

Generation Two

2. Atlas J.2 BUTLER (762) (James1); bur. Spellings cem.,, Carroll, TN; b. 7 Jul 1812 NC; m. Jane M./C. J. (--?--) (763) circa 1838, his 1st; m. Amelia Huffman (769), daughter of Michael Huffman (831) and Milly Keesee (832), 3 Jan 1847 Carroll, TN, his 2nd; T. E. Butler J. P; m. Susan Jane Pickler (770) 1 Oct 1867, his 3rd, her 2nd; 4 ch; he d. 14 Mar 1878 at age 65.

Parents of one or the other of Atlas and Wiley W. Butler (821) are questionable; a post-war claim submitted to the Southern Claims Commission by Atlas names a Wiley Butler as a cousin, not a brother (another Wiley?).  In the claim, Atlas Butler claim mentions these relatives who were in either the Union or Confederate army: nephew Marion Butler (CSA) [Francis Marion Butler, son of Marvel]; 3 or 4 brothers of wife, not res. of TN (CSA) [his wife at the time of the claim would have been Susan Pickler, but his wife at the time of the events on which the claim was based would have been Amelia Huffman]; brother-in-law Ely Spoon; and cousins Wiley, Henry, and John Butler (USA) [note that Wiley W. Butler enlisted in 7th TN together with Henry H. and John J. Butler].

Susan Butler 81 enumerated with family on the 1870 census of Carroll, TN; 16th distr., house no. 68;  if this is Atlas' mother Susannah Spencer (761), this age conflicts with her supposed birthdate of 1780 derived from previous censuses.

Parents of one or the other of Atlas J. Butler (762) and Wiley W. Butler (821) are questionable; a post-war claim by Atlas names a Wiley Butler as a cousin, not a brother (another Wiley?). Wiley enlisted 7th TN Cav USA, co. C, apparently enlisting together with Henry H. and John J. Butler on 17 Aug 1862 Benton, TN. Atlas also stated in the same post-war claim that he had cousins Henry and John Butler who served in the Union army; could Wiley be their brother?

Emily SPOON (812) was born in 1820. She died circa 1850.  She was the sister of Elijah Spoon who m. Sarah Butler.  Atlas Butler called Elijah Spoon brother-in-law in a post-war claim - was Sarah a sister of Atlas and Marvel, or was this relationship stated because Elijah was brother of Emily?)
