Waipawa Police from 1856
|
||
Originally Waipawa was given
police coverage from Napier by Constables Henry GROOME and John MURRAY.
Constable William THOMPSON patrolled the area in 1859, under the supervision of Corporal John EGAN. In these early days it appears Waipawa was the main operational centre outside Napier for all points south. Constable Denis BROSNAHAN was constable here from 1881-1887.
Born in Killorglen,Ireland, he came to New Zealand vic the USA. Sergeant Florence O'DONOVAN stationed at Waipawa in 1890's left here for Napier, where he drowned in 1897 while attempting rescue work in the big flood at Clive. Mention also made of two popular Constables L.W.C.LeCOMTE(Cliff) who took up his position 1939 and died in office in 1954. Also S.J.BROWN who arrived in 1955 to commence police duty. Stan was award the Q.S.M. in 1976. Although retire from service in 1980, he was recalled for 1981 Springbok Rugby Tour. He still resided in Waipawa in 1989.
JAMES ELLIS- Murderer. 1902 approx James Ellis was accused of shooting dead Leonard COLLINSON while out shrub cutting on Te Awaitttti Station near Martinborough. A police search was made but he had disappeared into the bush.Sometime later he made his presence felt by ransacking the homestead of William HIRST, at the time occupied by his manager George DOUGLAS. He was tracked by Detective BROBERG of Wellington,Constable Willcocks of Waipawa and local man George DOUGLAS. Today the hut, scene of his capture, is still referred to as Murderers Hut or ELLIS Hut. When captured Ellis was described as a walking arsenal. Ellis was taken handcuffed to Hists, then to Waipawa in Constable WILLCOCK's gig. From Waipawa went by train to Wellington where he was subsequently convicted of murder and hanged.

Australia, where he was a steam engineer. He commenced business about
1870 in Waipawa. He first operated a Photography studio, then a wholesale
chemist supplies, progressing to dentistry, and finally to the decidedly
shady side of life, illicit abortions. In the Waipawa Mail of 1884 two case from Coroner's court

established that Professor supplied a man at the Empire Hotel with opium
