Census 1867
Abbottsford, as Waipawa was first known, can lay claim to being one of
the oldest inland towns in New Zealand.(If you find someone of interest
you wish to know more about read or see the book at Library called Abbott's-Ford
by Margaret A Gray.- A History of Waipawa)

Frederick Segwick ABBOTT, early settler, runholder and ineteenth century speculator, played a leading role
in Waipawa's formative years. It is unfortunate that so little is known about Mr Abbott. It is conjectured that perhaps he did not live permanently on his property. We do know he remained unmarried and employed Thomas and
Hannah SMITH to keep house for him. Hannah was the first white woman to take up residence in Abbottsford. Thomas and Hannah's son Abbottsford, recalled some 70 years later that Abbott was the adventurer type, always
seen on horseback and never on foot. During the 1880's Abbott returned to England. One of his last records of him was 1990 when he sent a letterto Mr Edward BIBBY

The name Mary MacDONALD is synomous with the District High School. For26 years (1927-1952) sided her pupils through their secondary education with fairness, strength and integrity.

It was a sad day for education in Waipawa when the District High School closed in December 1958 after 50 years, to reopen in Feb 1959 as the Central Hawkes' Bay College.

Mr I.GRANGER was the first teacher appointed of the Special needs class. 1965.

Miss Z.ARNABOLDI 1967 AFTER 26 YEARS RETIRED FROM TEACHING.

Miss B.J.TOWERS and Mr G.LAWRENCE also retired from the school during 1980's. Many children taught during this period found that these two teachers had also taught their parents in the 50's.

Waipawa Police from 1856
Originally Waipawa was given police coverage from Napier by Constables Henry GROOME and John MURRAY.

Constable William THOMPSON patrolled the area in 1859, under the supervision of Corporal John EGAN.

In these early days it appears Waipawa was the main operational centre outside Napier for all points south.

Constable Denis BROSNAHAN was constable here from 1881-1887. Born in Killorglen,Ireland, he came to New Zealand vic the USA.
He joined the police force in Christchurch before transferring to Woodville, then to Waipawa. In the early 1880's he married Theresa HAMELING. They later transferred to Waipukurau.

Sergeant Florence O'DONOVAN stationed at Waipawa in 1890's left here for Napier, where he drowned in 1897 while attempting rescue work in the big flood at Clive.

Mention also made of two popular Constables L.W.C.LeCOMTE(Cliff) who took up his position 1939 and died in office in 1954. Also S.J.BROWN who arrived in 1955 to commence police duty. Stan was award the Q.S.M. in 1976. Although retire from service in 1980, he was recalled for 1981 Springbok Rugby Tour. He still resided in Waipawa in 1989.

JAMES ELLIS- Murderer. 1902 approx James Ellis was accused of shooting dead Leonard COLLINSON while out shrub cutting on Te Awaitttti Station near Martinborough. A police search was made but he had disappeared into the bush.Sometime later he made his presence felt by ransacking the homestead of William HIRST, at the time occupied by his manager George DOUGLAS. He was tracked by Detective BROBERG of Wellington,Constable Willcocks of Waipawa and local man George DOUGLAS.

Today the hut, scene of his capture, is still referred to as Murderers Hut or ELLIS Hut. When captured Ellis was described as a walking arsenal. Ellis was taken handcuffed to Hists, then to Waipawa in Constable WILLCOCK's gig. From Waipawa went by train to Wellington where he was subsequently convicted of murder and hanged.

Morris FLYNN had a grocery shop early 1920's-Morris arrived in Wellington straight from the Bendigo Goldfield..He came from Aberfayle,Ireland and was born there in 1840. He married Charlotte DOUGLAS in Waipawa and had five children.
Tim HEGGARTY had a shoe repairing business
Paddy LARNER was a Crimean War vet, who when he arrived in New Zealand became a station cook.
The Medical Hall.
Professor T.F.MOORE must surely be one of Waipawa's most infamous inhabitants. He commenced business in 1870 and was demolished in February 1986. But no bulldozer could bury this
shop's dark history.

It is understood that Professor MOORE came from Victoria, Australia, where he was a steam engineer. He commenced business about 1870 in Waipawa. He first operated a Photography studio, then a wholesale chemist supplies, progressing to dentistry, and finally to the decidedly shady side of life, illicit abortions.
This scraggly, bespeckled little man lived with Mary Ann MILLS and her grandchildren in a home fortified by high fences.Entrance
was gained through a front gate covered in creepers, then on through a maze of box hedges to the front door.

In the Waipawa Mail of 1884 two case from Coroner's court were dealt with, both cited Professor MOORE as being implicated. It was established that Professor supplied a man at the Empire Hotel with opium as treatment and he died. In 1902 Oct 30th, a young woman
from Napier died on the premises of the "Medical Hall" while under anaesthetic. A frightened professor ran to Dr. ROSS's for assistance, but it was too late.

The Professor and Many Ann MILLS were arrested for murder and committed for trial at the Supreme Court in Napier in February 1903. During the sensational trial Mary MILLS reversed her evidence to testify against MOORE. The jury, was unable to agree, so a new trial was ordered, subsequently the charges against MILLS were dropped.

Moore was found guilty of manslaughter, and sentenced to seven years imprisonment with hard labour. The court asked
for mercy, perhaps on account of his age. Moore was then 69. On February 21 an editorial in the Waipawa Mail produced some scathing rhetoric.Suggesting in their haste to get the case to court they bungled and were careless with their evidence. Moore never returned to Waipawa.

St Peter's Cemetery.
The earliest known person at St Peter's Cemetary was one William HOWELLS, on November 24th, 1863. He was first buried at the crossroads of Church Street and Kennilworth street. When St.Peter's cemetary was opened he was exhumed and place in St.Peters.

Of particular interest was one headstone, fashioned from an immense slab of totara. It is in a remarkable state of preservation and is now in the Central Hawke's Bay Settlers' Museum at Waipawa. The totara memorial was erected in memory of Morgan BURKR who
was killed in the Hampden (Tikokino bush) by a falling log on April 2nd 1877. This memorial was erected by fellow bushman Edward BIRT.
