About Us

my child has leukaemia............

about us

People often ask us how we found out our daughter Jemima had got Leukaemia. Jemima seemed to have a run of bladder infections which were treated by our local GP. This was followed by the glands on her neck swelling quite extremely, along with difficulty in breathing. Our GP thought these were as a result of the infections but asked us to come back at the end of the week if they did not get any better.

However, just a couple of days later we spotted a rash on her body and rushed her to our local hospital with suspected menangitis. The rash

is known as petechiae and is an indication that are were problems with the bodies platelets. After a series  of tests overnight Jemima was diagnosed with Leukaemia (26th January 2006). The impact of this was almost too much to bear, as armed with little information about Leukaemia, we assumed our daughter had been issued with a death sentence

That same day we were moved to Sheffield Childrens Hospital and treatment started straight away. We were taken to see Doctor Ajay Vora who took us through all the various treatments, drugs and procedures that Jemima would go through over the next couple of years. Although we were able to ask lots of questions the shock of of having our daughter was immense. We were worried as we thought that our son could be at risk, fortunately, we were told it was not hereditary. We also assumed that Jemima's life was going to be short, this was especially so for my wife as she had thought it was a 50/50 chance of survival. Our hopes were raised when we were assured that the success rate was much higher than this.
