My Sources

About the sources:

Unless another location is given in its description, the item listed is in my personal possession. Of those that are not in my "files" (ha!), you'll note that many are secondary sources (or even further removed). I've relied almost exclusively on the internet for access to data and records. At best, it's a place to begin. In most instances, rather than withhold information I haven't checked against original sources, I've opted to give as complete a picture as I can of what limited research I've done. That way you can judge for yourself just how readily you should accept my discoveries as factual family history. In many cases you'll see that caution and much more digging are in order. There are some instances in which I've decided not to include names or even entire family branches on this site, because I just wasn't satisfied that the connection claimed by others was backed by any solid evidence.

About this list:

Individuals are listed alphabetically, by surneme (ie. birth name, rather than adopted, married or changed name). Living individuals, and those who may be presumed living, have been excluded from this list. Also excluded are specific citations of items, such as letters from living family members, that may be considered personal. Reference numbers to the right of a name link to details about each source I consulted for information about her or him. Within its detailed description, hyperlinks to an internet source will open that site in a new window. For a list of the sources grouped by family branch, click here.

The sources

  1. Account of the descendants of Heinrich Loewen and Sara Toews - Dolores Harder
This is a tertiary source. It is cited by Ralph Thorpe in his list of Klaas Peters' descendants (source #30) I cite it in cases where Ralph has footnoted a specific fact with a reference to this source, a copy of which I do not have. It is a compilation of family data collected in preparation for the dedication of a plaque honoring Heinrich Loewen (1823 - 1908) and Sarah Toews (1827 - 1889). I know nothing of the original sources for the data, but can forward inquiries to Ms. Harder.

  2. A Perfect Marriage - Henry K. Peters
In this letter, dated May 30, 1965, my grandfather reflects on his life with 2nd wife Leora, and on her death.

  3. Austenfeld Family Home Page - Frank Austenfeld
Frank's page includes several members of the Baker side of his family, as well as Austenfelds. He does not cite sources.

  4. Autobiography of Henry K. Peters - Henry K. Peters
Written at age 72, this detailed account focuses on the first half of my grandfather's life. I have a photocopy of the handwritten manuscript. Cross-checking with other sources has proven it pretty reliable where names and dates are concerned, though some of the dates have to be extrapolated from the story's context.

  5. Birth Certificate for Henry Allen Baker - State of Missouri, Bureau of Vital Statistics
    # 70728, certified copy.

  6. Birth Certificate for Karl Marvin Baker - New York State Department of Health

  7. Chronicles and Genealogy of the Abraham Edmund Klassen Family - Helena Braun
Copyright 1988, Sardis, B. C., Canada. I have only a copy of the page in this book with information pertinent to the Peters Family.

  8. Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia - Lyman Chalkley
Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County 1745-1800. Originally Published by Mary S. Lockwood,1912. Reprinted Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore, 1965, 1966, 1974. Made available on the internet by USGenWeb project, here. From the foreword:
The value of this compilation of notes and abstracts will be determined by the extent of its contribution to the history of the early settlement of a great country and the acceptability of its form. It is not claimed that it is of equal value with the records themselves, or that it is perfect as a compilation.....The story is told by those who act the play. Nothing is added by commentator; nothing is colored by bias; nothing is affected; nothing the result of self-consciousness.....To present the bare facts has been the purpose of the compiler. Each reader will weave his own story, with his own coloring and atmosphere." [© Copyright 1996, USGenWeb. For my purposes, especially concerning ancestors who have been heavily researched by others more dedicated and thorough than myself, this is as close to original sources as I need to get. It should be noted that there might be transcription errors in this type of work, and anybody who is ultra-serious about historical accuracy would want to send for copies of original documents.

  9. Composite Index of Early Manitoba Mennonite Church Registers - Loren Koehler
Posted on the internet here by the Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society. The information was compiled from the following:
    • Bergthal Gemeinde Buch (Russia) 1843-1876 (B1843), (published by Hanover Steinbach Historical Society)
    • Chortitzer Gemeinde Buch 1874 (C1874), (microfilm at Mennonite Heritage Centre Archives and Steinbach Bible Institute)
    • Chortitzer Gemeinde Buch 1878 (C1878), (hard copy at Mennonite Heritage Centre Archives and Steinbach Bible Institute)
    • Chortitzer Gemeinde Buch 1887 (C1887), (hard copy at Mennonite Heritage Centre Archives and Steinbach Bible Institute)
    • Chortitzer Gemeinde Buch 1907 (C1907), (hard copy at Mennonite Heritage Centre Archives and Steinbach Bible Institute)
    • Kleine Gemeinde Genealogy Register (Toews Register) (PKG), (Profile of the Mennonite Kleine Gemeinde 1874, Delbert Plett)
    • Reinlaender Gemeinde (Manitoba) Buch 1880-1903 (RGB), (published by Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society)
    • Sommerfelder Gemeinde Buch 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, Untitled (S1A, S1B, etc., SUV) (hard copy at Mennonite Heritage Centre Archives and Steinbach Bible Institute)

  10. Couple Celebrates
I don't know what newspaper this clipping came from. The article, which includes a picture, is about George and Tina (Zacharias) Ulmer's diamond anniversary celebration. There is also some information about family members. Some of the content is clarified by a comparison to the letter Tina enclosed with the clipping.

  11. Death Certificate for Henry A. Baker - State of Michigan Department of Public Health

  12. Death Certificate for Henry K. Peters - Los Angeles Dept. of Health

  13. Descendants of David Janse Swierngh - Barbara Emery
Genealogical record submitted to the Wheeling Area Genealogical Society, posted here. No contact info is given for submitter. She includes source citations. Some of her information comes from Broderbund Family Archive CD's which I have not purchased. Some of the other references I've been able to verify. Most of the data she gives for people included in my site is in agreement with the sources I believe to be the most reliable.

  14. Descendants of Deacon Edmund Rice - Edmund Rice Association (webpage by George W. King)
"These pages are provided by the Edmund Rice (1638) Association to encourage responsible research into our family history. Several of our members have added citations to the vital records and other primary sources which you will find in our end notes. Because of constraints of the Internet only the first three generations of Edmund Rice's descendants are presented here.We have quite complete source citations through the fifth generation - g g grandchildren of Edmund and several lines from the sixth generation forward in time." © Copyright 2000, 2001 by the Edmund Rice (1638) Association
The Edmund Rice Association is a valuable resource for researchers of the Rice Family line.

  15. Descendants of Jacob (Foda) Zacharias - Dick Zacharias
This genealogical report includes full names, dates and places of birth and (if applicable) of death for over 200 descendants, plus spouses. Many of the marriage dates and places are also listed. I have a copy in my possession, but no information about the sources from which it was generated. I can forward inquiries to Dick.

  16. Descendants of Johan Ens - Dick Zacharias
This genealogical report follows the Ens line four generations, through Johan, Heinrich (1828 - 1887) and Justina (1856 - 1928), to the offspring of five of the children of Justina Ens and Jacob Zacharias, including our ancestor, Helena Zacharias (who is mistakenly listed as Helen). The report includes full names and dates and places of birth for most individuals. Also listed are dates and places of marriage and death for many of them. I have a copy, but no information about the sources used. Again, I can forward inquiries to Dick Zacharias.

  17. Dick Say's Genealogy - Dick Say
Dick Say's site traces Swearingen family lines. Notes are extensive, sources well documented.

  18. Early Looney in America - Leroy Tilton, transcribed by Tilton Transcription Group (TTG)
This exhaustive genealogical report is combined with a comprehensive collection of texts from official documents in which our Looney ancestors are named. The edition of Early Looney in America that is posted to the internet is copyrighted 1997, transcribed from manuscripts of Tilton's 1963 edition. The acknowledgement to Mr. Tilton states: "While this work is known to contain some errors, it is the single most widely used document relied on by present day Looney Genealogists in America."

  19. Familien Chronik from Helena's Bible - Helena (Zacharias) Peters
In the front of her Bible, my grandmother recorded the names and birthdates/places of her children, herself and her husband, and his parents, as well as her own.

  20. Family members
Relatives have supplied some information from memory, or from private family records.

  21. "Foda", a biographical sketch - Neil Zacharias
Neil (Kornelius) Zacharias (1894 - ?) wrote about his father, Jacob Zacharias (1856 - 1948) in response to a request from his nephew. It was reproduced and distributed to other family members in March 1975. Click here to read it.

  22. Funeral announcement for Virginia Peters - Dilday-Mottell's Mortuary, Long Beach, CA

  23. Genealogy of the Ozarks - Carmen F. Bein
A web site with transcriptions of public records information archived in Missouri. The site was copyrighted 2001, updated February 26, 2004. I expect it to prove valuable, as more of the transcriptions come online. I intend to keep checking it. To visit, click here.

  24. Gravestone of Maria Peters

  25. Gravestone of Justina Ens Zacharias
Photo by Dick Zacharias, 198?. The inscription would seem to have the wrong birthdate. Part of the explanation might lie in the fact that Russia had not yet switched to the Gregorian calendar when Justina was born. Like other immigrants of that period, her birthday might be reckoned by either calendar. However, the difference between the date on the gravestone and that I've gotten from other sources is off by nine of days, instead of the twelve required to correct for the calendar difference.

  26. Hand-drawn Baker family tree - Henry A. Baker
Discovered among Dad's keepsakes, the diagram includes individuals from three generations of the Baker/Black families, along with some dates.

  27. Hand-drawn Zacharias family tree
Made by a family member, the diagram follows the Zacharias name back to Wilhelm Zacharias (? - 1774) It lists years of birth and death for most individuals.

  28. "Henry Carroll Baker" - Henry A. Baker
In an assignment for Rhetoric IIa, 11:30, dated February 12, 1932, Henry A. Baker (1913 - 1988) wrote a biographical sketch of his father, Henry Carroll Baker (1879 - 1962).

  29. John Ray & Verlinda Swearingen - Deborah Piper
A GEDCOM file posted to the Rootsweb WorldConnect Project, John Ray & Verlinda Swearingen covers the Swearingen and Ray Family lines. There is a lot of conflicting data among the internet sites I've found searching those surnames, so I tend to regard most of the information as suspect if I can't determine where it came from. Citations in this GEDCOM refer only to imported genealogy files, so they are of no help, in and of themselves. Some sources are quoted in the notes, but they are not fully referenced. Ms. Piper does give contact information, however.

  30. Klaas Peters (b.1855) descendants - Ralph Thorpe
For the information in this genealogical report, Mr. Thorpe relied on "Chronicles and Genealogy of the Abraham Edmund Klassen Family by Helena Braun (source #7) and on Account of the descendants of Heinrich Loewens and Sara Toews by Dolores Harder (source #1). He also made direct contact with numerous descendants of Heinrich Loewen (1823 - ?) and Sarah Toews (1827 - ?), questioned them extensively, and kept records of his communications with them.

  31. Kris Hewitt's Genealogy Site - Kris Hewitt
This site traces the Rice family line. Some notes are included, all with sources clearly and completely (i.e. I could actually find them if I wanted to!) referenced. Much of the information comes from GenealogyLibrary, a subscription service that provides access to a variety of records, some more reliable than others. I can't vouch for the information there until I activate my own free subscription and look it up. Kris Hewitt's site also relies on information from the Edmund Rice Association (source #14) and Marlborough Massachusetts (source #35), sources I consider reliable.

  32. List of Zacharias Births
This sheet was found tucked between the leaves of Helena (Zacharias) Peters' Bible. It is written in the old gothic German script. Names and birthdates are given for all the children of Jacob Zacharias (1856 - 1948). Notations indicate which of them died as infants. Dates are also given for the births of Jacob and Justina (Ens) Zacharias. Thanks go to Ralph and Helen Thorpe for deciphering the manuscript. The original is now archived at the Mennonite Heritage Centre, in Winnipeg. I have scanned copies of it.

  33. Marble Family Genealogy Pages - Lynn R. Marble
Marble Family Genealogy Pages consists of indexes of a database which is not, itself, on-line. Thousands of individuals are listed, along with birth, marriage and death dates. No notes or source citations are given, and the website hasn't been tended in a while. When I e-mailed Mr. Marble for more information, I got no response. Some of his research notes are quoted at the Marble's "My Grandparents' Grandparents' Grandparents" site (source #34), including the comment "I get concerned when so many people state as 'fact' what is at best a guess." I'm under the impression, from his explanations of the arrangement of the material in the database indexes, that Mr. Marble is actually researching these names, and not just passing on unverified data, so I'm still hoping what I find on this website can be traced to reliable sources.

  34. Marble's "My Grandparents' Grandparents' Grandparents" - DeCody Brad Marble
The site includes a genealogy report on the descendants of John and Judith Marble which traces the line as far as our ancestor Hannah Marble. Information on the first two generations includes some source citations, and an excerpt from The Arrival of the Marbles in the Massachusetts Bay Colony by Lynn R. Marble, Marble Surname Genealogist (see source #33), which casts some doubt on the data. There are no source citations for data on the other generations. Some of it agrees with data from other websites, but I suspect a lot of what's out there is simply the same data being cyber-bounced back and forth, so I don't regard that as confirmation. There is a Family Tree Maker file available for download at the homepage.

  35. Marlborough Massachusetts - John Buczek
A wealth of historical information about the area in which our Rice ancestors first settled. Marlborough Massachusetts, contains abstracts of the vital records documenting births, marriages and deaths, ship and passenger lists, cemetery listings, and other important genealogical data. There are some scanned images of original documents and photos of gravestones as well.

  36. Marshalek - Ray Families Home Page - Jean Ray Marshalek
A Family Tree Maker site with a genealogical report titled "Descendants of Alexander Ray". There are source citations for much of the data. Some refer to secondary sources; some appear to cite official documents. The information on the Ray family line varies quite a bit from one website to another, so I won't be sure of any of it until I delve deeper, but the citations on the Marshalek - Ray Families Home Page give me a place to begin.

  37. Memorial Celebration Program for Adrian Smith - First Evangelical Covenant Church

  38. Obituary of Charles Wells - Ottowa Herald
    From October 1, 1963

  39. Obituary of Conrad McFarland
I have only a copy of the text, sent by a relative, so I don't know what newspaper it was in.

  40. Obituary of Gary McFarland
The obit is in the May 1996 edition of the newsletter published monthly by the Catalina Association of Tacoma and South Sound. I have a copy.

  41. Obituary of Henry C. Baker - Ottowa Herald
    From May 8, 1962

  42. On Being Ninety - Henry K. Peters
An autobiographical sketch, of which I have H.K.P.'s typed copy, as well as the handwritten manuscript.

  43. Pedigree 'A', Record of the Rice Family of England - Chas. K. Winslow
Compiled around 1932, this genealogical record lacks clarity and contains many innaccuracies. It relies heavily on Burke's Peerage, and a booklet entitled By the Name of Rice, by Dr. Charles E. Rice, Alliance, Ohio, 1911, both dubious sources. It purports to trace the Rice family line back to William the Conqueror and to Coel Codevog, King of the Britons. I consider it somewhat reliable for data on contemporary family members, with whom Mr. Winslow would have been able to communicate. The data about the descendants of Verlinda Ray (Rice) Black (1860 - ?) is correct. My mimeographed copy is blurred and faded, in places almost illegible.

  44. Photo of Allene Hinkle, Henry C. Baker and Lulu Ferguson
The inscription on the back reads "Aug 1926 - Allene & Bob's yard Allene Hinkle Harry Baker Lulu Ferguson (brother and sisters)" I don't know who wrote it.

  45. Photo of Henry C. Baker and Charles Ferguson
The inscription on the back reads "Harry Baker & Chas. E. Ferguson (brothers-in-law)". Fainter writing, above the inscription, also in an unknown hand, reads "J. A. Harris". Embossed on the front of the mat is "C. M. Hagan Sweet Springs, MO."

  46. Photo of Henry C., Nap and Ann Baker, Bob Hinkle, Charles Ferguson
The inscription reads "Charles Ferguson Harry Baker Nap Baker Bob Hinkle (in front of Nap's house) Ann Baker on porch Aug 15 - 1926" Also visible on the porch is a woman I've identified as Lulu Ferguson.

  47. Pleasant Rice - Jackie, Lane, Amber and Melinda
From the introduction to the web site: "The students in Mr. Scott Scheuerell's Freshman Civics class participated in the "Virtual Warrensburg Project." This project enabled students to research the history of Warrensburg and create a web page on it. Mr. Scheuerell would like to thank the Johnson County Historical Museum for its assistance with historical research." The page devoted to Pleasant Rice gives a concise list of facts about him. Unfortunately, the link to the bibliography is broken, so I can't verify any of them.

  48. Proceedings of the Council of Maryland 1667-1687/8 - William Hand Browne, editor
Maryland Historical Society, 1887, Archives of Maryland Series, volume 5, ©Copyright January 23, 2002 Maryland State Archives; The digital edition, backed by online scans of the 1972 reprint from which it was made, is published on the Maryland State Archives website. From the preface:
"This volume takes up the Council Proceedings from the point where our first Council Book stopped, and continues them from the originals in the possession of the State down to August, 1674, after which there is a gap of eighteen years in our records. This void we have, to a consider able extent, been able to till, partly by the discovery of an original Council Journal of 1686-1689.... in the Public Record Office, London, and partly by copies of other documents on file in the same office. Of these documents, many are transcripts from Maryland records, or such as must have been contained in the missing Council Books; while many are otherwise of great value as throwing new light on the history of the Province."
Our ancestor Garret Vanswearingen had frequent dealings with the council, which are reported in detail. Other family members are occasionally named.

  49. Quebec Passenger Lists: 1874-1880 - John Dyck, editor; annotations by Cathy F. Barkman
Original printing: Bergthal Gemeinde Buch Copyright 1993, The Hanover Steinbach Historical Society Inc. HTML created December 30, 2000 by Darren Enns; posted to the web by the Manitoba Mennonite Historical Society. This selective reproduction of the lists of passengers landing in Quebec during the years 1874 to 1880 shows the names and ages of Mennonite passengers. Names are compared to the Hamburg passenger lists, which provide supplemental data. Families are cross-referenced to church registers (see source #9). Click here to visit.

  50. Searching For Your Genealogy in Johnson County, Missouri - Marie Antal
From the home page: "This page is designed to assist folks with roots in Johnson County, Missouri, by providing transcriptions, links and miscellaneous materials that might be helpful." A very valuable resource. As close to original documentation as I've been able to get, in many cases, without actually going to Missouri, thanks to an ambitious and ongoing transcription project.

  52. Social Security Death Index - Social Security Administration
Updated monthly and posted on the internet as a service of Rootsweb, the SSDI gives exact dates of birth and death for working U. S. citizens deceased after 1962.

  53. Swearingen Genealogy - Brian Swearingen and Karel Whyte
Swearingen Genealogy is probably the most well-researched of the websites tracing the descendants of Gerret Vanswearingen. Karel Whyte has authored a book on the subject.

  54. Table Compiled from Grandma 3 Database - Ralph Thorpe
I've not yet purchased the Grandma 3 CD, so I don't have direct access to the data Ralph extracted from it. A project of the California Mennonite Historical Society's Genealogy Project Committee, the database contains genealogical information about 401,268 persons, most of whose ancestral lines can be traced to Mennonite communities in Poland and Russia. I'm not sure how well contributors are required to document their data. For more information about the database, click here.

  55. The History of Johnson County, Missouri - Biographies for Columbus Township - Kansas City Historical Co., 1881
Pages 922 - 931 include biographies of Pleasant Rice and John Rice. Although both men were alive at the time of writing, I'm not sure of the accuracy of the information. John M. Rice is said to have married Mary M. Tackett. His seven children are all listed without mention of his second wife, Virginia (Tackett), mother of the last three, with whom - according to other sources - he would have been living at the time the biographies were published. The biography of Pleasant Rice states that his father was "a native of East Tennessee"; other sources indicate Dangerfield was born in Virginia. I downloaded transcriptions of the biographies that I found on the internet, but the URL of the page where I found them is defunct. I believe the transcriptions, made by Bill Pennington, are to be included in the Searching For Your Genealogy in Johnson County, Missouri website (source #50)

  56. Will of Absalom Looney
I have a PDF file of the scanned original, provided by Madge Looney Crane and Phillip L. Crane who located it in the archives of Fincastle, Botetourt County, VA. It's available for download from their website, LOONEY Family Genealogy Links. According to Tilton (source #18) "The will was proved at June Botetourt court 1796. (Will Book A, 426)".

  57. Will of Garrett Vansweringin
The will was dated 25 Mar 1698, proved 25 Oct 1698. Karel Whyte transcribed the text from a copy of the original, which is located in the Maryland State Archives (Hall of Records, Annapolis, MD, Prerogative Court Wills 6, p210-211) The transcription is posted, on the Swearingen Genealogy site (source #53).

  58. Will of Robert Looney
Dated September 14, 1769, proved November 13, 1770. The will's text is posted by Tilton Transcription Group on the Early Looney in America website (source #18).

  59. Will of Thomas Swearingen
The will was signed 29 Jul 1708, proved 19 Mar 1710. Posted on the Swearingen Genealogy site (source #53) is Karel Whyte's transcription, made from a copy of the original, which is in the Maryland State Archives (Prerogative Court, Wills 13, p265-267).
