Naomi's Diaries
Naomi DeSelms Cox's 1918 Diary ©
Farm Life in Plain Township, Wood
county, Ohio, continued
Naomi DeSelms Cox born in Ohio October 19,
1855.
Her diaries from 1911-1938, still in existence, after spending a
number of decades in the attic closet of her son Clyde,
are transcribed on these web
pages.
She was 62 years old as this
1918 diary begins.
She married John Hughes Cox
in Wood Co OH 27 April 1879. In 1914 they lived in the north part
of
Plain Township in Wood county on what is now Hannah Road.
The acreage
north of them was Middleton Township. They lived on the old
Chapman
farm. You can see the land belonging to Esther Chapman in the 1886
plat
map. The 1910 census was helpful to identify the neighbors
mentioned in
the diaries. The 1912 plat maps of Plain and Middleton townships
were also helpful showing exactly
where people lived. Some of their nearest neighbors included
the farms of Henry Goodenough, Dan
Smith, Frank Self.
Harve and Inda Everett were across the street. Wenig, Ewing,
Coen, LeGalley, Thomas, Armitage, and Householder families were
nearby.
Naomi Esther DeSelms Cox
was a farm wife and the mother of eight children in Wood
Co in
northwestern
Ohio.
She frequently refers to John
her husband, whom she calls "Pa"
and her five children living by 1911:
Ethel
(living in Toledo with husband Jim Ewing;
their children: Hazel the oldest grandchild, Glenn, Donald, Dorothy, Doris and baby Ralph
(Jim's parents- Mr and Mrs Wesley Ewing, lived very near
Naomi and John Cox),
Johnny and
his wife Anna whose
parents lived in Luckey, living in Bowling Green- their little
girl was Zoe. and baby Dwight.
Ralph (R.E.) living at home as 1918 begins,
Clyde
or"C.H." with his dental practice in Toledo and wife Grace, and
John Emerson and Helen.
Jason and
his wife Lorena Abbott Cox who farm in Wood county
and their son Hughie. Hughie was never a well child.
Besides
calling Hughie "Babe", Naomi
sometimes refers to her
youngest grandchild as "Babe".
In March 1918, she and Pa moved into Bowling Green to 627
Wallace Ave. They had begun considering and discussing the
move
the previous fall. "The boys" are still at the old place, Jason
who had
to move from the farm he was living on (leased for a year) had to
move.
Ralph seems to live there also.
Note the links to findagrave,
and other web sites that may be of interest. Italics
indicate my added
notes. As you may have noticed if you've looked at earlier
years, Naomi didn't use alot of punctuation or capital letters as
she
wrote in the diary. But starting in 1917, I have used periods and
capital letters for easier reading.

Note: Odds are that there are
a few bad links, mistakes, etc, here. Please let me know if you
catch any, or if
you would like to see some additional links, let me know. I've had confusion about Si or Cy
or
Roy Johnson mentioned in October of 1916. After more research, I
think
Roy (Leroy) is Cy and Angelina Johnson's son. I don't know what
became
of Roy though and there is no link to him on findagrave.. If
you know, let me know.
