Harry Jans aged 21years

Harry's daughter Helga told me her father was about 6'1½ and 14stone in his prime. He let school at East Warburton when he was 13years and his first job was on a farm. He later tried gold mining at McMahons Creek and may have been part owner of a mine when he was 16years. He spent some time in working in New Zealand before returning to work at the Contention Mine back at Upper Yarra.

Wife Born: HENRIETTA COSHAM daughter of THOMAS COSHAM and EMMA MAKER was born 1885. She was born and reared in Dorcas Street South Melbourne once known as Emerald Hill. Her father was a butcher and the family  lived quite comfortably until her father died. Then her mother had the task of providing for herself and five daughters she took in washing and did housework. In 1903 Hettie moved with her mother and step father John Grieve to the Upper Yarra where her mother became a cook at the Reefton Hotel. It was here that Ettie met the Jans family.

Marriage: Harry married (1) HENRIETTA COSHAM 08 Jun 1910 in Hows Cres. South Melb. Vic. After Hettie's death Harry married (2) MARY GINGLES Abt. 1936 in Armadale Vic.. She was born Abt. 1894 in Northcote Vic., and died 10 Jul 1980 in Mernda Vic..

After their marriage Harry and Hettie as she was known moved to Broken Hill in Sth Australia where Harry worked  in the mines. On their return to Victoria they lived in Melbourne before moving back to McMahons Creek where they had both previously lived and took up occupancy of Harry's parents vacant farm house. Harry worked for MMBW at O'Shannesy, Silvan, Hume Vale and Wallaby Creek Reservoirs.

Deaths: Henrietta died 1936 in Wittlesea VIc Age 51yrs. Harry died 26 Aug 1969 in Mernda Vic. Age 85yrs
