Jane Gorrie
Jane's
tragic Death
Death of Jane Gorrie: Tragedy struck the Gorries when Jane died
at the young age of 32years from acute pneumonia, on the 9th
July 1896, just a few months after the birth of their last
child. James would have been devastated and at his wits end
coping with the loss of his young wife and being left with five
young children ranging in ages from 9years to a baby not yet
3months old. James had help caring for the children, baby Jane
was reared by her father’s sister Charlotte Gorrie and her
husband Charles Murfield and Charlotte was practically reared by
the Benbow family.
How many years James stayed on in the
Yambuk Heywood area is uncertain. Some years later maybe after
his children had grown up he moved to the Warburton area and
worked at Ezard’s mill as an engine driver. James seems to have
been a man to get himself into trouble with the law. At
Warburton Court of Petty Sessions 9/3/1912 he was charge for
stealing vegetables growing in the garden of Elizabeth Hilditch
the value of 2pounds and was fined 40/- plus costs. James lived in a
de-facto relationship with a lady by the name of Florence
‘Amelia’ Dowden, known as Mrs Gorrie.
Birth of De-Facto wife:
Amelia Dowden was born in
1865 the daughter of Edwin and Mary Dowden nee Lambert.
Death of Amelia:
James and Amelia's
relationship ended in disaster when during a domestic argument Amelia
fell hitting her head, dying as a result of her injuries. James
served two years imprisonment for manslaughter from 30th May 1912.
(I have court transcript etc.)
2nd
Marriage: In 1916, 2years after his return to the outside
world James married 47year
old spinster Ester Ivey at Hawthorn. Either Ester at this
time knew nothing of James past or she saw the good side of the
man.
Wife (2) Birth: Ester
was born at Ballarat in 1868 the daughter of John Ivey and
Christina Russell.
James and Ester lived at Big Pats Creek before purchasing a
four-roomed weatherboard dwelling on Lots 11 & 12 of crown
allotment 8 with total frontage to River Road Millgrove. James
was an engine driver, and they seemed to live a peaceful
existence. My mother Maude and her siblings knew Ester as their
Grandma Gorrie.
