Born: J
AMES³
HODGKINSON (JAMES² JAMES1)
was born in late 1825 and
baptised in the Parish of St John church, Preston Lancashire,
on the 1st January 1826 the son of James Hodgkinson
(1st) and Jane Abbott. Nothing is known of James
young life, but as a young man with a taste for adventure, he
left his family and homeland to try his luck in a new country.
UK
1841 Census: James aged 15yrs (twin of Jane) occupation at
this time a weaver. He was living with his parents and family
members at Charlotte Street Preston.
James
Arrived Australia 1843 "Royal Consort":
Although unproven the
shipping information I have located is I believe our James
Hodgkinson. His voyage aboard the ship the ‘ROYAL CONSORT’, a
barque of 527 tonnes, departed from Cork in Ireland on the 9th
November 1843 arriving in Port Phillip Victoria on the 18th
July 1844 after a voyage of 97days. He was listed on the Royal
Consort’s shipping records as being unmarried, aged 26years,
occupation labourer, religion Protestant. He left the ship of
his own account, and the cost of his bounty passage paid for
him was £18/14/-Also aboard the ship was an Abraham Hodgkinson
who was third mate officer and could have been a relative of
James?
Marriage: James Hodgkinson had been in Victoria 5½ years
when he married the young Irish girl Mary Ann Millican
(note spelling Milligan) on the 4th February 1850
at St. Peters Church in Melbourne. Witnesses to their marriage
were James Barton and Mary Macteer.
Looking at the shipping
list of the ‘Elizabeth’ a Mary McKeerer was one of those
single young girls on the voyage with Mary Ann. With an Irish
accent this surname could well have been Macteer and she is
probably the witness at James and Mary Ann’s marriage. It was
a coincidence to also find on the same page of the church
register for Saint Peters church in Melbourne not only the Hodgkinson marriage recorded but also that of the Abraham
Hodgkinson who was aboard ‘Royal Consort’ with James. Abraham
had married Harriet Faithfull only a few days prior to James
marriage.
Marriage Registration of James & Mary Ann Hodgkinson 1850
Wife
Born: Mary
Ann Millican, was born in Kilrea, County Derry
Ireland on the 28th October 1827, the daughter of
William and Mary Milli(k)en. Mary Ann’s mother’s maiden name
is unknown and the surname was at this time spelt Milliken.
She had at least one sister Elizabeth b.1830. Unfortunately
there is a gap in the Kilrea registers from July 1832–1837
that may have contained other siblings.

Mary
Ann Arrived Australia 1849 "Elizabeth" :
It was during the terrible
years of the potato famine 1845-1851 that 19year old Mary Ann
Millican emigrated from Ireland. At this time emigrants could
sail from Londonderry or travel via a steamship company, which
ran a service from Derry to the preferred port of embarkation
of Liverpool England. However our Mary Ann had travelled to
the port of London to board the ship the ‘Elizabeth’ on the 17th
March 1849, she was one of forty young single Irish girls on
this voyage. Were these girls emigrating at their own choice
or where they being sent to Australia because of Ireland’s
economic woes.
The ship ‘Elizabeth’ was a
569ton Barque and the Master on the voyage was Alexander
Ferguson Morris. She arrived at Port Phillip on the 23rd
July 1849; the Elizabeth’s shipping list states:
Occupation: Mary Ann was
to be employed by a Mrs Robinson of Elizabeth Street as a
housemaid. She was to be employed for a period of six months,
with wages of £12 with rations. In an early directory I found
a Mrs Robinson in Elizabeth Street occupying a bookshop. Also
on this voyage was a Catherine Milligan maybe a sister or
family connection to Mary Ann. She was coming to the
employment of Mrs Dickens at the Swamp (Batman’s Swamp) for
six months a wage of £13 and rations. It is interesting to
note that in 1849 a great flood put Bateman’s Swamp under
water.

James &
Jane Hodgkinson's life in the Daylesford area.
It is not known what James
occupation was in those very early years, it seems he had
moved about the sawmills and goldfields. On birth
registrations of his children it is shown they had lived in
Melbourne, Greendale near Ballan, Muckleford and Newstead near
Castlemaine, Campbell’s Creek, and by 1864 he was working at a
sawmill at Daylesford.
Occupations in later years:
Labourer, farmer,splitter,bushman,factory hand
James Hodgkinson is listed in the
1880-81 Victorian post Office Directory as Farmer Musk Creek.
Land Purchases: By 1871 James had purchased
land in the county of Talbot, Parish of Ballarto, Allotment 9,
3acres 1rood 37perches, for the price of £4.0.0. In 1876 he
had brought the adjoining allotment 8, of 3acres 1rood
23perches, and gave his occupation as laborer and his place of
residence as Musk Creek.
By 1880 James had sold both
allotments 8 and 9 to his son in-law George Burge, husband of
his daughter Agnes. George Burge died this same year, the
allotments were at some stage consolidated and purchased by
Henry Beardsell.
On 10th July
1900, James purchased back his previously owned land lots 8 &
9 from Henry Beardsell. Then on the 8th June 1892
James bought more land in the county of Talbot, Parish of
Ballarto, Allotment 18x, 16acres 2roods 15perches and his
occupation now given as a sawyer. He owned this land until his
death in 1898, but it was heavily mortgaged to Alfred Nicholas
Hopkins and Rosa Hopkins. This land was transferred to his
wife Mary Ann and then to their son James who had paid off the
mortgage prior to his sister Matilda Lynch taking over the
land in 1910.
James and Mary Ann
Hodgkinson became the parents of seven children between the
years 1853-1867. Coping with the deaths of three of these
children would have caused this family a lot of heartache.
Mary Anne was found to be a midwife to many over the years.
James Death:
James liked his beer and died as a chronic alcoholic on the 10th
December 1898 at Musk Creek and is buried in a grave with six
other members of the Hodgkinson family at Daylesford cemetery.
Death Certificate of James Hodgkinson 1898
Mary Ann Death: Mary
Ann lived to be 78years old dying of cancer of the gallbladder
on 26th December 1910 at Daylesford Hospital, she
was buried in a public grave at Daylesford cemetery.

the youngest of James and Mary Ann’s family was born at
Musk Creek in 1871, James³ married Louisa Ashley on 18th
July 1898 at the Bible Christian Church Parsonage Daylesford.
Louisa was the daughter of Alfred and Martha Ashley nee Mobbs;
she was born in 1881 at Daylesford. James occupations over the
years were labourer, farmer, splitter, bushman, factory hand,
horse driver and carter. He and Louisa lived for some years in
Gippsland and then moved to the Yarra Valley where James
worked as a horse driver pulling truckloads of timber for
Cumming Smith mill at Britannia Creek. James purchased a block
of land Lot 28 in the township of Yarra Junction on the 1st
March 1911 and life ran smoothly for the next 6months until a
tragic accident took his life at the early age of 38years.
From the inquest papers it is stated by John Martin who was
working with James at the time of the accident that he and
James had just left Cumming Smiths mill with a truck loaded
with saw timber heading for Yarra Junction. They were on a
bridge when the truck capsized owing to one of the cross
pieces of the bridge breaking and the truck fell a distance of
about 10feet. James was sitting on top of the load driving the
horse when the truck went over, John Martin was thrown clear
but James was crushed under the load. He died on the 29th
