HOOD

Frederick Paul Cecil Fowler<Tennessee Jane Hood<Elijah Monroe Hood

Migration:  TN, KY, IL

Elijah Monroe Hood was born 1815 in Maury County, Tennessee to John Hood and unknown Kimmons.  His mother's given name is probably Agnes (Nancy) Kimmons.  The names Agnes and Nancy have been used interchangeably in documents found in Maury County for the will, inventory and estate settlement of John Hood.

Tennessee Jane Hood was born July 6, 1868 Johnson County to Elijah Monroe Hood and Susan A. Kuykendall.  Tennessee married Joseph Ralph Oral Fowler November 3, 1886 Johnson County, Illinois.

Elijah arrived in Illinois between 1853 and 1855.  However, the first land purchase listed below was November 14, 1853.  It should be noted that Elijah and first wife, Martha, had a child born November 20, 1853 in Graves County, Kentucky and the next child was born about 1855 in Johnson County, Illinois.

Elijah married first Martha Kendall about 1840 in Tennessee probably Maury County. Martha was born about 1825 in Alabama.  They had three children born in Tennessee, one in Kentucky and three in Illinois. Elijah and Martha were in Weakley County, Tennessee in 1850 and in Graves County, Kentucky by November 20, 1853 where their fourth child was born.

Elijah married second Susan A. Kuykendall September 9, 1864 Johnson County, Illinois.  Susan was born in Johnson County, Illinois about 1834 to Joseph Kuykendall, Jr. and Sarah Cooper.  Elijah and Susan had three children.

Susan died between 1872, birth of last child, and August 1876 when Elijah married third Louisa V. (Foster) Ford August 6, 1876 in Johnson County, Illinois. Elijah married fourth Jamima (Oliver) Horsley March 24, 1881 in Williamson County, Illinois.

Elijah purchased three parcels of 80, 40 and 40 acres November 14, 1853 and another 40 acres November 29, 1853.  June 28, 1858, he purchased 40 acres from his future brother-in-law Joseph C. Kuykendall.

Elijah was listed in Vienna, Johnson County in the 1860 and 1870 census records.  In 1880, he was listed in Bloomfield, Johnson County.  He was a Lay Minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church between 1860 and 1870.  Elijah was sworn in as Justice of the Peace November 6, 1859 Johnson County, Illinois. Descendants say Elijah was a Circuit Rider for the Methodist Church and the name was MacHoody when the family came from Scotland.  Neither has been verified.

Elijah Monroe Hood is buried in the Taylor Cemetery as Rev. Elijah Hood.  On each side of his grave are small unmarked stones.  No grave sites have been found for Martha Kendall Hood or Susan Kuykendall Hood.  John William Sanders was the Administrator for Elijah's estate settlement.  At the time of his death, he owned several lots in Tunnel Hill South, Johnson County.  All living children were listed and one grandson, William Odum.

NOTE:  Two of Tennessee's brothers married sisters of Mary Jane Sanders, Tennessee's mother-in-law and Mary Jane Sanders' Father was the Administrator for Elijah's estate settlement.
