SLIGHTOM FAMILY HISTORY

SLIGHTOM

Fern Rosella DeHoog<Nancy Pearl Slightom<James Slightom

Migration:  England, MO, IL, MO

Thanks to Lisa Slighton for marriage record of James H. Slightom and Rosella Greene.  Have been able to go back two generations from James.

There are several variations of Slightom - Slighton, Slightam, Slightem, Slightum, Slayton, Sleightom(n) and Sleightholme.

James H. Slightom was born April 1861 in Medora, Macoupin County, Illinois, the son of Joseph Slighton and Nancy Watkins.  James married Rosella Greene October 22, 1887 in Jersey County, Illinois.  They had two daughters born in Illinois, Leila and Nancy.

Nancy Pearl Slightom was born September 24, 1895 in Illinois to James Slightom and Rosella Greene.  Nancy died June 8, 1919 at the age of 23 years 8 months 15 days from complications of an automobile accident leaving four young children.

In 1900, James and Rosella were living in Peoria Illinois.  By 1905, the family was in St. Louis, Missouri.  In the 1910 Missouri Census, James is no longer listed.  His wife, Rosella, (34) is enumerated with John Slightom (26) born in Illinois.  Who is John Slightom?

James' father, Joseph M. Slightom, was the son of John Slightom born, per census records, between 1791-1793 in England.  No ship records have been found so far. A birth date of March 25, 1792 Yorkshire, England has been recorded for John, but I have found no source to validate.  A preliminary search of Parish Records in England indicates Yorkshire as the largest concentration of Sleightholmes.

John's wife is recorded as Charlotte in the 1850 Missouri Census.  It is possible Charlotte, born Kentucky, was his second wife as his son, Joseph, recorded both parents born England in the 1900 Illinois Census and other children of John have recorded their mother born Virginia.

John was in Missouri by the early 1820's where his children were born. He is found in the early records of Howard, Macon and Schuyler Counties, Missouri. Some of John's children remained in Missouri and others went to Illinois.

Joseph Slightom and wife, Nancy Watkins, are found in Illinois Census Records - Macoupin County 1860, Jersey County 1870, and Macoupin County 1900.  In 1880 they were in Macon County, Missouri.  They returned to Illinois where five of Joseph's children married late 1880's and early 1900 - James - Jersey County and Charles, Thomas, Jerry and Matthew - Macoupin County.
