Notes for John Macy
In Nantucket Births, he is listed as:
“John 1st, h. Deborah (d. Richard Gardner 1st and Sarah), s. Thomas and Sarah Hopcot, 14th, 7 mo. 1655, in Salisbury, PR. 38.” 1003

"John Macy was a house carpenter, and there are probably several houses yet in existance on the island, some parts of which were made by him."991

“On account of the inconvenience of obtaining a confirmation of purchases made from the Indians, it was concluded best to obtain a general grant of the entire island, which was the Dongan patent, dated June 27, 1687. This patent is very elaborate and lengthy, and . . it can be found at the Registry of Deeds at Nantucket and in the Genealogy of the Macy family. . . It established John Gardner, James Coffin, William Gayer, Peter Cofin, Nathaniel Barnard, Stephen Hussey and John Macy a body corporate called the Trustees of the Freeholders of the Town of Sherburne.”1011

“August 1, 1682. Administration on estate of Thoms Macy granted to his son John. The estate was valued at £71, of which about one-half was land and the rest cattle.” 1011

“He d. ae 36 leaving eight children.” 1014

“The character of family continuity in the politics of the island is examplifed by the family of John Macy. John Macy I (1655-91) was the only son the the first-purchaser Thomas Macy to have removed to the island. Before his death at age thirty-six, John I served seven terms as selectman, the first in 1680 when he was just twenty-four years old. John and his wife Deborah (the daughter of Richard Gardner I) had eight chidlren, four of them sons. Three of the sons (John II, Jabez, and Richard) joined the Society of Friends and exercised much influence on the Society’s business meeting.” 1022

“John, b. 14 July 1655 at Salisbury; d. 14 October 1691 on Nantucket; m. Deborah Gardner, daughter of Richard and Sarah (Shattuck) Gardner. They were the progenitors of all the Macys of this country including Rowland Hussey Macy, the sn of a Captain John Macy, who after a few months on a whaler went to New York to opena store under his own name - Macy’s today. “ 626

“ [Thomas] Macy died in 1682, and his son John (1635-1691) was his worthy successor. John married Deborah Gardner, daughter of Richard and Sara, and their descendants carried the name of Macy from Nantucket all over the world.” 1038

“The first John Macy was a house carpenter and it is entirely possible that the present Nathaniel Macy house on Liberty Street may have been his original homestead.” 1038

“In the Macy line, Lucretia [Mott]’s thrice-Great-Grandfather was John Macy (1655-1691), whose wife wa Deborah (Gardner) Macy, (1658-1696) - both non-Quakers. She was naturally another daughter of the original Quakers in Massachusetts and Nantucket” 1023
