While her mother taught at a nearby school, Millie was left to look after Constance and go to school at Yankalilla.
When she was about twelve to fourteen she became a pupil teacher; teaching the younger children while being a student herself. She taught at Myponga, Waterloo, Crystal Brook, Murray Bridge; 6 years German flat, (it's name was changed in 1914).
When she was about 30 she taught at Tantanoola where she met Mr. McRostie. He was in his thirties. They married and were given a Huon Pine chest of drawers for a wedding present. The chest was passed on to Millie's daughter, Elwyn, when she married Archie Schofield and then to Elwyn's daughter Susan after she married Richard Barrows.
She also went by the name of Millie.
