INTRODUCTION

Unlike my other family line articles, this one lacks adequate documentation for the first generation.  It is my hope that display of my possibilities will bring forth the necessary proof (or disproof) by others.

Among the numerous contributors to this article I would like to single out for special thanks Jerry L. Miller, 8626 Monroeville Rd., Hoagland, IN 46745-9733.

1.      GEORGE PANCAKE

First, what I know for a fact about George and his family:

He was born ca. 1780-1786, married (1) an unknown wife, married (2) RACHEL GROVER 3 Feb. 1823 in Fairfield Co., OH, by William Ingnard, J.P., both of the County of Fairfield,[1] probably died before the 1840 census was taken.  According to the 1820 census his first wife was born ca. 1775-1794.  The birth date for his second wife, Rachel Grover, is equally vague.  The following birth dates for her result from census data:

        1790-1800 (per 1830 & 1840 censuses)

        1795 (per 1850 census)

        1797 (per 1860 census).

In the 1820 census for Hocking Twp., Fairfield Co., OH, p. 079, George Pancake was head of the following household:

        1 male <10 (son Aaron)

        1 male 26-45 (George)

        2 females <10 (daughters Elizabeth & Isabel)

        1 female 26-45 (wife #1).

        1 (George) in agricultural occupation.

A John Pancake was listed in the 1821 Delinquent Tax List for Fairfield Co., OH, Range 18, Twp. 13, Sect. 9 SE.[2]  A John Pancake born 1760, died 1825 in Frankfort, Ross Co., OH (see “Possibility B” below).

In 1826 in Hocking Twp. George Pancake paid personal property tax on 2 horses valued at $80 and 1 neat cattle at $8.  The County tax amounted to 26.6¢ and the State tax to 17.6¢ for a total tax of 47.3¢.[3]

In 1827 in Hocking Twp., Range 20, Twp. 14, (p. 181), George Pancake paid tax on 1 horse valued at $40 and 1 neat cattle at $8 for a total tax of 24¢.  He owned no land.

George Pancake was not listed in the Fairfield Co. 1828 tax list.

In 1829 (p. 184) George Pancake paid tax on 2 horses valued at $80.

The 1830 tax (p. 195) was the same as for 1829.

In the 1830 census for Hocking Twp., Fairfield Co. (p. 215) George Pancake was head of the following household:

        3 males <5 (son Benjamin + ? + ?)

        1 male 10-15 (son Aaron)

        1 male 40-50 (George)

        1 female 10-15 (daughter Isabel)

        1 female 15-20 (daughter Elizabeth)

        1 female 30-40 (wife Rachel).

In the 1831 Quadrennial Enumeration George Pancake was listed in Hocking Twp. which had a population of 639.  But no George Pancake appeared in subsequent tax lists or Quadrennial Enumerations.

Nor did a George Pancake appear in any of the following available Fairfield Co. records:

        Board of Commissioners Journals, 1812-1825 & 1843-1853

Board of Commissioners General Index to Journals, 1835-1962

        Common Pleas Minute Books, 1817-1824 & 1831-1840

Clerk of Courts, Naturalization Index, 1820-1900.

Thus it would appear that our George Pancake lived in Hocking Twp., Fairfield Co. from 1820 (or earlier) but never owned land there.  He probably died in 1831.

According to “History of Van Wert & Mercer Counties” (1882), 235, George Pancake’s son Aaron removed with his parents to Pickaway Co. OH, ca. 1829.  From the above, it would appear that the family didn’t leave Fairfield Co. until at least 1831, but by the time of the 1840 census Rachel and 4 of her children were living in Lancaster (immediately North of Hocking Twp.) in Fairfield Co. (p. 277), where Rachel Pancake was head of the following household:

        2 males 10-15 (sons Benjamin & Abraham)

        2 females 20-30 (daughters Elizabeth & Isabel)

        1 female 40-50 (Rachel).

In the 22 Aug. 1850 census for Hocking Twp., Fairfield Co. (p. 329), Rachel was head of the following household:

Rachel Pancake, 55, F, born VA, can’t read or write

Isabel Pancake, 36, F, born OH, can’t read or write

Abraham Pancake, 20, M, laborer, born OH

Joseph Williamson, 18, M, born OH

Ruhuma Williamson, 15, F, born OH

Andrew Williamson, 13, M, born OH

Elizabeth Turner, 7, F, born OH

Amanda Turner, 5, F, born OH

Lewis Turner, 3, M, born OH.

Who were these Williamson and Turner children?

In the 1860 census for Hocking Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio, P.O. Lancaster (p. 58), Rachel Pancake was head of the following household:

Rachel Pancake, 63, F, widow, value of personal property $25, born VA, can’t read or write

Joseph Pancake, 28, M, broom maker, born OH

Rhenhama Pancake, 24, F, works out, born OH, can’t read or write

Elizabeth Pancake, 16, F, works out, born OH

Amanda Pancake, 14, F, born OH

Lewis Pancake, 12, M, born OH, in school in year.

Note that the Williamson and Turner children now have “Pancake” as their surname.

My descent from George Pancake is shown in Fig. 1.

Now I will summarize the data I have accumulated over the years which conceivably refer to my George Pancake.  Obviously not all of it does.  The “possibilities” A. through G. are:

A.     The only child of my George Pancake whom I have found in the 1880 census is Aaron (see ¶2. below) and the report is that Aaron’s parents were both born in Ohio.

B.     A George Pancake was the youngest son of Andrew (died 1793 in WV) & Elisabeth (Ronningern) Pancake.[4]  When his father wrote his will 23 Oct. 1786 in Hardy Co., VA, George was under 18 years old.  Thus he was born 1768-1786.  George’s older brother Joseph was to raise George (and his older siblings Isaac, Mary & Abraham) until age 18.[5]  Joseph Pancake was head of a family of 4 whites & 0 blacks in VA in 1782.[6]  On 17 Mar. 1800 a George Pancake witnessed a bill of sale from Thomas Dugan to William Welch of Hampshire (immediately North of Hardy) Co., VA.[7]  No further word on this George Pancake has been found but note that George’s elder brothers removed to the following areas:

John (born 1760), died 1825 in Frankfort, Ross Co., OH

Joseph (born <1768) died <1811 in Hampshire Co., WV

Isaac (born 1771) died 1862 in Romney, Hampshire Co., WV

Abraham (born ca. 1780) died 1842 in Lawrence Co., OH.

C.     Another George Pancake first shows up in the 1810 census for Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., PA (p. 631), as head of the following household:[8]

        1 male 16-26 (George)

        1 female <10 (daughter Margaret?)

        1 female 16-26 (wife Elizabeth?).

Did this George Pancake come from VA (see ¶B. above)?

No further record has been found in Fayette Co. for this George.  Did he and his family move over to

Washington Co., PA, the next county to the West (see ¶D. below) or to Ohio?

D.     On 2 Mar. 1815 a George Pancake in Washington Co., PA, purchased 9¾ acres of land for $160 from Christian Dustman and Susana his wife.  Christian had bought this land from Henry Dustman 2 June 1813.  Adjoining landowners were Joseph Bider, Junr, Samuel Hughes, John Hill & Samuel Weir.[9]

On 8 Jan. 1816 George Pancake & his wife Elizabeth sold this same land to Jesse C. Woodruff for $160.  Both George and Elizabeth signed the deed with an “X.”  Witnesses were William McFarland, J.P. & Phebe McFarland.[10]

On 1 Dec. 1818 George Pancake purchased lot #20 in Williamsburg from Jonathan Martin and wife Rachel for $60.  Jonathan had bought this land from James Dunlap 18 Mar. 1818.[11]

In the 1820 census for Strabane Twp., Washington Co., PA (p. 165), George Pancake was head of the following household:

        1 male 26-45 (George)

        3 females <10

        1 female 26-45 (wife Elizabeth).

George operated a tavern in the town which became known as Pancake (and later as Williamsburg & Martinsburg and now as Laboratory).[12]   On 18 Dec. 1820 and between 1 Feb. & 11 March 1821 George purchased liquor supplies from Mr. Leslie Corrons.[13]

On 1 Mar. 1823 George Pancake purchased lot #19 in Williamsburg from Jonathan Martin for $35.[14]

In the 7 June 1824 issue of “The Reporter” George Pancake advertised that he intended to remove to the state of Ohio and offered for rent effective Nov. 1 his tavern situated on the National Road 2 miles east of Washington.  In consequence of his determination to remove, he requested all those indebted to him to come forward before June 22.[15]

Finally, on 14 Jan. 1828 George Pancake of Washington Co., PA, sold the above 2 lots on Union St. in Williamsburg back to Jonathan Martin for $100.  George signed the deed with his “X.”  the document was not recorded until 23 Oct. 1876.[16]

George Pancake had married Elizabeth Gardner, daughter of George Gardner of Amwell Twp.[17]

Since this George Pancake did not depart Washington Co., PA, until at least 1828[18] it appears unlikely that he was my George Pancake who was living in Fairfield Co., OH, in 1820.  Also note that there was no mention of a George Pancake in “Common Pleas, Store & Tavern Licenses for Fairfield Co., OH, 1809-1848.  One report has that George & Elizabeth Pancake of Washington Co., PA, had a daughter Margaret born in 1801 who married John Alexander and removed to Perry Co., OH, and then to Ross Co., OH.[19]

E.      A George Pancake had a tavern for many years west of the now disappeared village of Bellepont, Middletown Twp., Columbiana Co., OH.[20]  In the 1850 census for Middleown Twp., Columbiana, OH (p. 181B), George Pancake was head of the following household:

George Pancake, 44, M, farmer, $10,000 value of real estate, born PA

Jane Pancake, 44, F, born PA

[-?-] Pancake, 12, F, born OH, in school in year

Adam Pancake, 10, M, born OH, in school in year

William Pancake, 8, M, born OH, in school in year

Meary Pancake, 6, F, born OH

Amy Pancake, 4, F, born OH.

George Pancake died 12 May 1876, age 66Y, 3M, 11D.  His wife, Jan (Jane?) died 8 Aug. 1877, age 59Y, 11M, 3D.  They were both buried in Row 9 of the Zion Methodist Cemetery, located just west of Route 170 on the Pancake-Clarkson Road in Section 27 of Middletown Twp.  Mrs. Pancake had been a member of the church since 1815.[21]

George and Benjamin Pancake owned adjacent tracts in R1/T7/S22 & 27.[22]

This George Pancake was too young to be the George Pancake of ¶D. above.

F.      Back in 1983 Aaron J. Pancake of Charleston, WV (see ¶2.i.a. below), wrote me that 3 Pancake brothers from the Frankfurt on Main area of Germany settled in Pancake PA, and established an overnight stage coach inn there.  One brother removed to Eastern Ohio, another to the Huntington, WV, area and the third further West to Hawpatch, Noble Co., IN.  Did the first brother remove to Columbiana Co., OH (see ¶E. above)?

Further research indicates that the Hawpatch area was in Perry & Elkhart Twps. in Noble Co., IN, but that it no longer exists.  A John & Effie A. (Radcliff) Pancake settled there in 1846 on land which had been entered by his father, John Pancake, in 1838.  John and his wife Dorothy had come from VA to Ohio where they died in Pickaway Co.  Another early Pancake family to remove from Ohio to the Hawpatch area in 1844 were John’s brother Isaac Pancake, his wife Eve and their son Joseph L. Pancake.  Isaac died 26 Feb. 1880 and Eve died 14 Sept. 1881.[23]  Geneva Pancake, a younger sister of Joseph L. Pancake, was born in 1855 in Noble Co.  She was the mother-in-law of Ruth Pancake (see ¶2.i.a. below).

Aaron J. Pancake also reported that his great-great-grandfather George Pancake “left home at the age of nine years and refused to say why or when he went.”

G.     A. D. Pancake of Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH, before 1912 wrote that 3 sons and 2 daughters from Germany settled first in Eastern VA.  The 3 brothers migrated to the West.  Abraham, the eldest of the three, married Lucinda Dunn in VA in 1759.  They all removed West to Romney, Hampshire Co., WV.  Philip remained there.  Abraham & wife Lucinda and Isaac & adopted boy John Kimbel moved on to Guyandotte, Cabell Co., WV, and then to Lawrence Co., OH, and finally to Storms Creek, 6 miles NE of where Ironton is now located.  Abraham patented land there.  Isaac settled at the mouth of Bear Creek.

Abraham D. Pancake goes on to write that John S. Pancake of Staunton, VA, had written him that Philip Pancake of Hampshire Co., WV, had by his first wife a son named Isaac and that this son died in Feb. 1862 at the age of 91 (i.e., born ca. 1771).  Note that this Isaac checks out with the Isaac Pancake son of Andrew & Elizabeth Pancake of ¶B. above.  In fact the descendancy line from Isaac, son of Andrew & Elizabeth Pancake does lead down to John S. Pancake.

Now let us report on what is known about  the children of my George Pancake:

The children of George and his first (unknown) wife were:

i.         ELIZABETH PANCAKE born ca. 1813, married JOHN BRESSLER 18 Oct.1841 in Pickaway Co., OH,[24] died 17 Apr. 1874 in Marion Twp., Allen Co., IN.   John married a second time (Elizabeth [-?-]) but had no children by his second wife.  John was born ca. 1810.  He was a son of Peter & Dorothy (Weaver) Bressler.  He was a farmer[25]

c.       CLARA PANCAKE born ca. 1858.

v.       ABRAHAM (ABRAM) PANCAKE born in July 1831, married SARAH JANE HEATH in Van Wert Co. 17 Apr. 1856 by Charles Germann, J. P.,[27] died in Oct. 1857, age 26Y, 1M, 12D, buried in the Pancake family cemetery on Wilbur Pancake’s land.  Sarah was born ca. 1838 in Ohio, a daughter of John & Elizabeth (Wright) Heath.  Sarah Pancake, age 22, was living with her father at the time of the 1860 census for Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co. (p. 446B).  Sarah married (2) John H. Brown in Fort Wayne, IN, 15 Sept. 1861.  She died 5 Feb. 1882 in Monroe Twp., Allen Co., IN, and was buried in Monroeville. Sarah was a granddaughter of Edward & Mary (Gardner) Heath as was the Sarah Jane Heath who married Peter Showalter (see ¶2.v. in the accompanying Showalter article).[28]

In the 30 Aug. 1850 census for Hocking Twp., Fairfield Co., OH (p. 335) Abraham Pancake, age 20, laborer, born Ohio, was listed in Michael Leonard’s household.  Note that he was also listed on 22 Aug. as a son of Rachel Pancake in her household (see ¶1. above).

Abraham left no will.  On 18 Nov. 1857 Sarah Jane relinquished her right to be administrator of his estate.  On 24 Nov. Benjamin Heath was appointed administrator with John Heath, Gaven McConal & Eleazer Gilbert as surety for the bond.[29]  Mariman Heath attested to this administrator’s bond.  Appraisers were M. F. Rickey, Stephen Capper & John Ramsey.  The crop in the field was set aside for the widow’s support.  A John C. Heath bought a few of Abraham’s possessions at the estate sale.  One list made by Stephen Capper, Wm Everett & John L. Ramsey read: “one Bead and bead sted, one yearling heffer, one trunk, one clock, one brextfest tabel, one  family bibel, ten hims books, five knives and fork, six cups and sossers, six plates, tew supe dishes, one cream jug, one water pitcher, tew boles, three glass tolnblars, one coffee pot, one coffee mill, one water bucket, one churn, one wash tub, too milk crocks, one oven, one skilet and led, one teekettel, six teaspoons, one looking glass.”

Pancake, March 12, 1857” deliver to Rickey’s yard after Sept. 1, 1857 (Note that the Pancake Cemetery was also known as the Rickey Cemetery).[30]

Following Abraham’s death in 1857 Aaron Pancake (see ¶2. below) paid off Abraham’s 4 small debts and then the estate paid him.  According to the ledger books for his sawmill, Aaron had a transaction with Abraham ca. 1857.

Abraham and Sarah had a son ABRAM E. PANCAKE who died 9 Aug. ____, age 16 days,[31]  buried Pancake Cemetery, Harrison Twp.  There is also a tombstone in the Pancake Cemetery for another son of Abraham & Sarah Jane who died 12 Mar. 1857.

2.      AARON PANCAKE

Aaron Pancake was born 4 Jan. 1817 in Salt Creek Twp., Fairfield Co., OH, married (1) MARGARET WHITE 30 June 1834 by A. W. Beery, J. P., in Hocking Co., married (2) JULIA ANN THROCKMORTON in Hocking Co. 2 Jan. 1842 by R. H. Dunkle, J. P.,[32] died 22 Sept. 1891 in Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., OH, of paralysis.[33]  Aaron divorced Margaret in Dec. 1841 in Pickaway Co., OH.  The petition for divorce had been filed 20 Sept. 1841.  “She neglected to wash or cook & committed adultery with Abram Davis. Margaret now resides in Hocking or Ross County” according to the decree in Pickaway Co. Supreme Court Complete Record #6, p. 428.

In the 1830 census for Perry Twp., Fairfield Co., OH (p. 237), a George White was head of the following household:

        1 male 5-10

        1 male 10-15

        2 males 15-20

        1 male 40-50 [George]

        1 female 5-10

        1 female 10-15

        1 female 15-20 [daughter Margaret?]

        1 female 40-50.

In 1807 a George White family was one of the 3 original families settling in what is now Perry Twp., Hocking Co.[34]  A George White was an entryman for three 160-acre tracts of land in R19/T12/S22 & 29, Perry Twp., Fairfield (now Hocking) Co., 1805-1812 (see Figs. 4 & 7).[35]  Is this George White the father of Margaret White?

Julia Ann Throckmorton was born 4 June 1819 in Athens Co., OH, died 6 Dec. 1894 in Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., OH, of lung and kidney trouble.[36]  According to the 1830 census for Salt Creek Twp., Hocking Co. (p. 381), Julia Ann, age 10-15, was living there with her parents.  Julia Ann’s father, Elijah Throckmorton, was listed on the 1831 and 1832 Poll Books for Salt Creek Twp.  On 28 Dec. 1841 Aaron and Julia applied for their marriage license (#97).  Julia Ann was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  For her ancestry see my companion article “The Descendants of Job & Frances (Stout) Throckmorton & their late 18th-century Migration to Virginia & Ohio,” Part II,  ¶4.ix.b.  Aaron and Julia Ann were buried in Old King’s Church cemetery near Convoy (Fig. 2).  Note that her name was spelled “Julian” on the tombstone.

The Pancake cemetery, located on Wilbur Pancake’s land in Convoy, is no longer there.  Because the township was not tending to the cemetery as it was supposed to, it became badly overgrown.  Wilbur Pancake filed a complaint in an effort to get the township to clean up the cemetery, but instead, it removed all the headstones and set them out by the road.  The township notified a descendant of each person (those they could find) that the headstones were available to be picked up.  The land was converted back to plowed farmland.  Many of the stones were not claimed and leaned against Wilbur’s barn for years.

According to “History of Van Wert & Mercer Counties” (1882), 235, Aaron Pancake at the age of 12 (i.e., ca. 1829) removed with his parents to Pickaway County, where he remained till Oct. 1851.  But note that Aaron married Margaret White in Hocking Co. in 1834 and married Julia Ann Throckmorton in Hocking Co. in 1842.  Aaron has not been found in the 1840 census.  Note, however, that Julia Ann Throckmorton’s widowed mother, Sarah Jane (Stancliff) Throckmorton, was head of a household in Jefferson Twp., Ross Co., at the time of the 1840 census.[37]  Julia Ann (or her sister) was living with her.

On 1 Aug. 1844 Aaron Pancake obtained a patent for 160 acres of land in Van Wert Co., Range 1-E, Township 2-S, Section 9, purchased from the Land Office in Lima, OH (Fig. 3).  Note that Aaron was living in Ross Co. at that time.

On 14 Oct. 1845 Aaron Pancake was #54 on the voter list of the Hocking Co. Court of Common Pleas, Poll Books & Tally Sheets (p. 356).[38]

In the 1850 census for Adelphi, Colerain Twp, Ross Co., OH (p. 479), Aaron Pancake was head of the following household:

Aaron Pancake, 33, M, laborer, $1,000, born OH

        Julia A. Pancake, 31, F, born OH

Aaron Pancake, 11, M, born OH, in school in year

George Pancake, 7, M, born OH, in school in year

John Pancake, 5, M, born OH

Mary Pancake, 3, F, born OH

Allen Pancake, 1, M, born OH.

Figures 4, 5, 6, and 7 show the evolution of Salt Creek Twp. (T11, R19) and Colerain Twp. (T10, R20) from 1818 to 1850.[39]  I suspect that the above statement that Aaron lived in Ross Co. from ca.1829 to 1851 stemmed from the confusion resulting from the several redistributions of townships in this time frame.

At any rate, Aaron and his family removed to Van Wert Co. in Oct. 1851 and settled in Harrison Twp., where he was a farmer (Figs. 8 & 9).  By 1838 he had obtained an “original land entry” for 160 acres in Section 9 of Harrison Twp.[40]  When he first settled in Harrison Twp. Aaron had to go 26 miles to Delphos to mill.[41]  With the help of his son Aaron T. Pancake, Aaron built a sawmill in Wolfcale.  The machinery was hauled by an ox team from Van Wert.  Aaron’s sawmill ledger books show that he had transactions with his older children from 1855 to 1865, including Allen and Aaron T. Pancake.  Jerry Miller reported that these ledger books were in Carl Lichtensteiger’s attic (see ¶2.i.a. below).

Over the years Aaron added considerable acreage to his holdings and at one point was the largest land holder in the township, being the owner of 597acres of land, all well improved.  Fig. 9 defines land holdings in NE Harrison Twp. in 1887.  At that time he was a farmer and a Justice of the Peace.  He resided in the SW¼ of the NW¼ of Section 3 of Harrison Twp., Post Office Wolfcale.  Apparently Aaron had disposed of most of his land by that time.  He is shown owning 40 acres, the NW¼ of the SW¼ of Section 4.  Other Pancakes in the area are:

        A. T. Pancake: S½ of NE¼ of Section 4 and SW¼ of NW¼ of Section 3

Rufus Pancake: S½ of SW¼ of Section 4

Amanda Pancake: E½ of NW¼ of section 9

Allen Pancake: NE¼ of Section 9

Abram Pancake: W½ of SW¼ of Section 9

Mary (Pancake) Showalter: W½ of SW¼ of Section 9.

Aaron’s family bible was in the possession of Russell Pancake’s widow (see ¶2.viii.c. below) but cannot presently be located.  Aaron’s ledger books for his sawmill are also in existence.

In the 1860 census for Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., OH (p. 449), Aaron Pancake was head of the following household:

Aaron Pancake, 43, M, value of real estate $8,000, value of personal property $400, born OH

        Julia A. Pancake, 42, F

Aaron T. Pancake, 21, M, lawyer, Value of real estate $1,000, value of personal property $30, born OH

George Pancake, 17, M, born OH, attend school

Allen Pancake, 11, M, born OH, attend school

Abraham Pancake, 6, M, born OH,

Mary Pancake, 13, F, born OH, attend school

        Elmira Pancake, 3, F

        Rufus Pancake, 8 months, M

        Andrew Williamson, 32, M.

In the 1880 census for Harrison Twp, Van Wert Co., OH (p. 310), Aaron Pancake was head of the following household:

Aaron Pancake, 63, M, farmer, lame, born OH, parents born OH

Julia A. Pancake, 61, F, keeping house, born OH, parents born OH

Abram Pancake, 23, M, son, works on farm, born OH, parents born OH

Rufus Pancake, 20, M, works on farm, born OH, parents born OH

Manda Pancake, 17, F, daughter, at home, born OH, parents born OH

Ann Ramsey, 11, F, taken to rase.

From Van Wert Co. Probate Court, case #2400:

Aaron Pancake died 22 Sept. 1891, resident of Harrison Twp.

Widow: Julia A. Pancake, Wolfcale, OH

        Children:

·        Aaron T. Pancake, son, Wolfcale, OH

·        George Pancake, son, Monroeville, IN

·        Allen Pancake, son, Wolfcale, OH

·        Abram Pancake, son, Wolfcale, OH

·        Rufus Pancake, son, Wolfcale, OH

·        Mary Showalter,  daughter, Daisy, OH

·        Amanda Miller, daughter, Wolfcale, OH.

Aaron  Pancake had signed his will 29 Nov. 1890 in the presence of John H. Darnell, C. V. Fromme & H. G. Richie.  He bequeathed to his wife for and during her natural life his real estate in Harrison Twp. (the NW¼ of SW¼ of Section 4 containing 4 acres).  Subject to the above, he gave the above real estate to his sons Rufus and Allen.  He had advanced to his other children all that he desired that they shall receive of my estate.  On 8 Jan. 1892 son Rufus Pancake was appointed administrator of the estate (see ¶2.x. below).  The personal goods and chattels of the deceased were appraised at $145.70 by _. _. Close, Clark Wolfcale & John Sheets.  Notes due the deceased were $15 each from A. T. Pancake, G. Pancake, M. Showalter, A. Pancake, Abe Pancake, R. Pancake & A. Miller and $21 from R. Pancake for a total of $126.  The real estate was appraised at $1,250 for a total appraisement of assets of $1,525.45.  At a public sale on 9 Apr. 1892 the personal goods & chattels were sold for $149.45.  Rufus Pancake, administrator, then established that the personal estate and effects of the decedent were wholly insufficient to pay the valid debts of the decedent (estimated at $1,600) and the costs of administration (estimated at $150).  He proposed the sale of the 40 acres of land and by 20 Dec. 1892 this proposal was accepted by Julia and her 7 children.  On 12 Jan. 1893 Rufus Pancake, administrator, sold the W½ of the above land to Jesse Rumsey for $600 and the E½ to Aaron Pancake’s daughter-in-law Olivia Pancake for $650 (see ¶2.viii. below).[42]

The only child of Aaron & Margaret (White) Pancake was

i.         AARON T. PANCAKE (Fig. 9a) born 13 Mar. 1839 in Hocking Co., OH, married HANNA CAPPER (Fig. 9aa) 11 June 1863 by Elder John Larue, died 1 Oct. 1905 in Harrison Twp., Van Wert Co., OH, of paralysis.  Hannah was born 17 Apr. 1838 in Carroll Co., OH, died 6 Feb. 1917 of shock following a fracture of her elbow and thigh.  Hannah was walking upstairs, stepped on her dress and fell backwards about halfway down the flight of stairs.  She was a daughter of Michel & Margaret  (Barnhouse) Capper.[43]  In 1910 Hannah was living with the family of her son John Pancake.  Both Aaron and Hannah were buried in Kings Cemetery, Harrison Twp.  A photo of the Aaron T. Family may be view at Fig. 9-1.  From left to right:

On the trip from Hocking Co. to Van Wert Co. Aaron T. drove a pair of oxen.  He then helped his father build a sawmill, hauling the machinery from Van Wert to Wolfcale.  Aaron T. and his family lived on his farm in the SW¼ of NW¼ of Section 3, Harrison Twp.  He belonged to the Bethlehem Lutheran church.
