Daniel was born 21 Jan. 1773 in Freehold, N.J., died 21 Jan. 1846, buried in Antioch Cemetery, Jackson Co., Ohio. Daniel & Sarah resided in Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. In Jackson Co., Ohio, Daniel's name appears in the following records:193

  3. WILLIAM SPRIGGS, born 20 Nov. 1834 in Jackson Co., OH, married NANCY A. DAWSON (DANSON) 29 Nov. 1855, died 4 Sept. 1919.  Nancy was born 29 Apr. 1837, died 7 Jan. 1913. They resided in Ironton, Ohio.
  4. MARGARET SPRIGGS born 1838 (1836?) in Jackson Co., married GEORGE H. DOWNS, died 1903 (ca. 1910?). George was born in 1836, died in 1901.  Margaret was living with her grandmother in 1850.

On 1 Apr. 1843 the Chillicothe Land Office issued to Ebenzer Spriggs a patent for 40 acres of land described as 1NWSE, Ohio River Survey, No. 6 N.194c

  1. LEWIS EBENEZER SPRIGGS b. 22 June 1840, married MARY (MARIAH) SMITH. Mary was born ca. 1843 in Ohio, d. 29 Mar. 1916 in Kirksville, Adair Co., Mo.  She was a daughter of Phelix Smith (b. 1808 in Va.) and Rachel Keller (b. ca. 1809 in Ohio).  They both died in Adair Co., Mo.194d

  1. DELILAH SPRIGGS, born 21 June 1816 in Ky., married LEWIS RADABAUGH 31 Jan. 1836 in Jackson Co., Ohio. Lewis, son of Jesse & Elizabeth (Arthur) Radabaugh, was born 1817 in Ky.195 Elizabeth (Arthur) Radabaugh and Azariah Arthur, husband of Nancy Anne Spriggs, were siblings.
  1. THOMAS THROCKMORTON, born Sep. 1780 in Hampshire Co., Va., married SARAH ANN BURT ca. 1809, died Aug. 1857 in Jackson Co., Ohio. Sarah was born ca. 1790 in Ohio, died May 1865. She was a daughter of Washington & Valentia (Brass) Burt. Thomas & Sarah were buried in Mound Cemetery, Richmondale, Ross Co., Ohio.

Thomas served in the War of 1812. He received a land grant of 160 acres near Ray, Jackson Co., Ohio.

Thomas & his family resided in Jackson & Scioto counties. The thirteen children of Thomas & Sarah Throckmorton were:196

  1. CATHERINE THROCKMORTON, born 1810 in Jackson Co., died before 1850.
  1. JOSEPH THROCKMORTON, born 8 July 1812 in Steubenville, Ohio, married HARRIET COOKE RATHBURN 5 June 1840, died 18 Dec. 1888 in Ashland, Neb. Harriet was born 3 May 1823 in Jackson, Jackson Co., died 15 Aug. 1893.  She was a daughter of Dr. John W. & Roanna (James) Rathburn.  Joseph was a shoemaker.

On 28 May 1841 Joseph & Harriet Throckmorton sold 86 acres in Lick Twp., Jackson Co. (lot #72 in T7/R18) to F. C. Wilcher for $200. Witnesses were William Warwick and Aaron Walterhouse.197

In 1850 Joseph resided in Fairfield Twp., Jefferson Co., Iowa.  He was age 38 with occupation shoemaker.  In Aug. 1856 he moved his family to Harrison Co., Iowa, going by ox team and taking 3 weeks to cross the state.  He left his family in Council Bluffs, and taking his only son went on to Plattsmouth, NE, arriving there 2 Jan. 1857.  He later sent for his family and remained there about 10 years, working at his trade.  In Aug. 1868 he took up a homestead of 80 acres about 35 miles west, where he lived until Mar. 1888, then sold his farm and moved to Ashland, NE, where he died.  Joseph and Harriet were Methodists.197a

  1. ROANNA MARIA THROCKMORTON, born 30 June 1843, Jackson, Co., married Rev. WILLIAM HENRY KENDALL in 1860 near Ashland, Neb,  died 1 Nov. 1895 in Lincoln, Neb. William was born ca. 1839 in Illinois, died in 1885 near York, Neb.
  1. ALONZO WELLINGTON THROCKMORTON, born 24 Apr. 1845 in Jackson Co., Ohio, married AMERICA VIRGINIA PERRINE 15 Dec. 1872 near Ashland, Neb., died after 1914. America was born 27 Nov. 1842 in Bethel, Ohio, a daughter of James & Susanna (Record) Perrine.  Alonzo served 2½ years in the Civil War.  He enlisted at Plattsmouth, Neb., 17 Feb. 1864 in Company C, 1st Neb. Cavalry.  He was taken prisoner by Gen. Joe Shelby 24 Aug. 1864, paroled at Batesville, Ark., 1 Sept. 1864, and walked most of the way from there to St. Louis, Mo., where he arrived 12 Sept.  He was mustered out 1 July 1866 in Omaha, Neb.  Alonzo was an extensive land owner, shoemaker, grocer, farmer, justice of the peace, school director for 40 years, class leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church, postmaster at Divide and later at Homestead, Neb.  Carl Throckmorton ([email protected]) is a descendant of Alonzo & America Throckmorton's son ARTHUR LAURESTON THROCKMORTON who was born 19 Oct. 1873.

George was born about 1814 in Va., d. 17 Mar. 1870 in Vinton Co., Ohio.197b He was a son of Moses Spicer, Jr.  George & Rachel were living in Licking Twp., Jackson Co., Ohio at the time of the 1840 census; in Harrison Twp. at the time of the 1850 census; in Elk Twp., Vinton Co. at the time of the 1860 census.  George was listed as a farmer in 1850 and a day laborer in 1860.

The nine children of George & Rachel were:

  1. JOHN E. SPICER b. about 1838 in Vinton Co., Ohio, m. EMLEY A. [-?-] in 1865 in Ohio, d. before 1929.  Emley was born about 1851 in Ohio.  John served in the Union Army in the Civil War from 19 June 1861 to 1 Mar. 1865.  He was wounded and listed as a POW on 9 July 1864 at Cloyd's Mountain, Va. The children of John & Emley were all born in Ohio:
  • CLARENCE M. SPICER b. about 1866.
  • IDA M. SPICER b. about 1868.
  • MINNE B. SPICER b. about 1870.
  1. JAMES B. SPICER b. 2 Nov. 1840 in Vinton Co., Ohio, m. MATILDA WOLF about 1862 in Ohio, d. 2 Apr. 1918 in Montgomery Co., Ohio.  Matilda was b. 1 Nov. 1841, d. 29 June 1912 in Montgomery Co. In 1880 James & Matilda were living in Green Twp., Brown Co., Ohio.  James was a miller by trade.  He served Co. E, 174th OVI from 10 Aug. 1864 to 18 June 1865.  The children of James & Matilda were all born in Ohio:
  • EDWARD SPICER b. about 1863, m. unknown, d. 29 Nov. 1897 in Montgomery Co., Ohio.  In 1880 he was working in a mill in Brown Co., Ohio.

  1. ELIZABETH THROCKMORTON, born 10 Feb. 1820 in Scioto Co., married ARCHIBALD ARNOLD 1878, died Apr. 1902. Archibald was born 1819 in Indiana. He was a farmer. In the 1860 census for Liberty Twp., Ross Co., Ohio, (p. 221), an Elizabeth Throckmorton (age 40, seamstress, born Ohio) was living with the large family of John C. Harbert. Both Archibald & Elizabeth were buried in McArthur, Elk Twp., Vinton Co., Ohio.
  1. MARY ANN THROCKMORTON, born 29(!) Feb. 1822 in Scioto Co., married CHARLES McCORMICK, died young. Charles was born ca. 1821. He was a stone moulder. Their four children were born in Nebraska.
  1. SARAH ANN THROCKMORTON, born 29(!) Feb. 1822 in Scioto Co., married CHARLES PARKER LANDRUM 29 June 1851 in Ross Co., died 16 Nov. 1902 in Ashville, Ohio, buried at Richmondale, Ohio. Charles was born 6 July 1829 in Greenbrier Co., Va., died 12 June 1926(?) at the home of his grandson in Higby, Ohio. Charles was a son of Augustus & Mary (Riddle) Landrum. Charles was a Methodist and a farmer.

All of the children of Charles & Sarah Landrum were born in Scioto Co.:

Annanias was born 14 June 1827 in Greenbrier Co., Va. At the time of the 1860 census Annanias & Charity were living in Liberty Twp., Ross Co., Ohio (p. 221).

  1. BREWER THROCKMORTON, born 13 June 1830 in Portsmouth, Scioto Co., married CYNTHIA M. GRIFFIS 12 Sep. 1861 in Ross Co., died 8 Jan. 1909. Cynthia was born 12 July 1841 in Richmond Dale, Ross Co., Ohio, died 24 Feb. 1911, buried in Little Mound Cemetery, Richmond Dale, Ohio. Brewer was a farmer and a shoemaker.  He served 3½ years in the 2nd Va. Cavalry during the Civil War.  He was severely wounded in the head at the Battle of Winchester.

Mary was born 21 Dec. 1860 in Jackson Co., Ohio, a daughter of John Leonard & Lavoca Jane (Clemens) Burris.  Warden was a school teacher.  He and Mary resided in Raysville, Jackson Co., Ohio.198b
  1. EMMA M. THROCKMORTON, born 17 Sep. 1867 in Hamden, Vinton Co., Ohio, died 17 June 1870 due to a kick on the head by a horse.
  1. RALPH WATSON THROCKMORTON, born 22 Feb. 1870 in Hamden, Vinton Co.
  1. PERSIS M. THROCKMORTON, born 21 May 1872 in Hamden, died 3 Sept. 1877.
  1. CORDELLA BEATRICE THROCKMORTON, born 10 Oct. 1874 in Hamden, married HARRISON P. LAWREY in 1894, died 26 Nov. 1915. Harrison was born 15 Feb. 1860, drowned 26 Mar. 1913 in the Chillicothe flood along with 3 of their children.  All were buried in the Chillicothe Cemetery.

  1. EDWARD COOPER THROCKMORTON born 24 Dec. 1836 in Galion, Crawford Co., Ohio, married (1) ELIZA PAYNE 4 July 1859, married (2) OLIVIA J. ELLIOTT, died in 1919 in Marion, Ohio.  He was a dentist and musician.  Eliza was born in Bristol, England, died in 1884 in Marion.  Olivia was born 7 Apr. 1886 in Lebanon, Ky.  She was a niece of William's first wife.  The children of Edward & Eliza were:
  1. HARRY E. THROCKMORTON born 6 Jan. 1863.
  2. EDWARD THROCKMORTON born 1866.  he was a dentist.
  3. CATHERINE THROCKMORTON born 1868, married J. C. HALLOCK, M.D., dentist.
  4. WILLIAM THROCKMORTON born 1869, married ADA FLORENCE BOWERS, died 1933 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a dentist.  Mrs. Elaine Throckmorton's husband is a descendant ([email protected]).
  5. LOUIS THROCKMORTON born 1872, lived in Marion.  He was a weaver.
  6. CHARLES THROCKMORTON born 1873. He was a dentist in Columbus, Ohio.
  1. JAMES PERRY THROCKMORTON, born 18 Jan. 1838 in Galion, Ohio, married ELLEN O’SHEA 1862, died 1892 in Rapid City, S.D. Ellen was born 16 Mar. 1848 in Nashua, N.H., died 10 Sep. 1926 in Rapid City, S.D.201

  1. JOSEPH THROCKMORTON [FGS, p. 81; CWT, pp. 217, 221; JES, p. 92] was privately baptized 26 Aug. 1746 in Christ Church, Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co., N. J. In his 15 Sep. 1933 letter to P. H. Waddell Smith, CWT wrote that Joseph Throckmorton probably went to Virginia. Joseph was mentioned in Sarah (Throckmorton) Nichols’ 1755 will, but was not mentioned in his brother Thomas’ 1763 will. Thus Joseph probably died between 1755 and 1763. J. Russell Throckmorton of Cuchara Rural Station, LaVeta, CO 81055, is a descendant of Joseph.202
