He was a nephew of Ephraim Child of Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA who bequeathed 40 acres of land to Benjamin's first son, Ephraim. Came to America about 1630. Married about 1653, possibly at Roxbury, Suffolk Co., MA."

145 He "62. BENJAMIN CHILD, son of Benjamin Child (124) and (???) (???) (125); b. about 1620 in England; d. 14 Oct. 1678 Roxbury, Mass., as Benjamin Childe (Suff. P. XII: 293); m. MARY BOWEN (63) about 1653; dau. of Griffith Bowen (114 & 126) and Margaret Fleming (115 & 127); b. about 1635 Wales, England; d. 31 Oct. 1707 Roxbury*, as the widow Mary Child.

(Roxbury(+)) Mary Childe, ye wife of Benjamin Childe, admitted 23 Jan. 1658.

His wife was mentioned in the administration of her father Griffith Bowen's estate, as the widow child. Dated 6 Nov. 1683.

(Child Genealogy, by Elias Child).

(R. Comm. Rep. XXXIV: 435) Benjamin Child, the common ancestor of most of the name in Roxbury, Brookline, Boston, and Woodstock, Conn., settled on the estate between Whitney's and the Brookline boundary, owned until recently by his descendants. Besides his house and barn, he had eighty acres conveniently adjoining to ye sd housing.

His estate was near Great Pond, now Jamaica Pond.

(R. Comm. Rep. XXXIV: 282-302) No more interesting spot can be found in Roxbury than Meeting-House Hill, upon which, in the summer of 1632, the first meeting-house was built. The second was built in 1674, the third in

1741, the fourth in 1746, and the last in 1804.

From the records of Roxbury, Mr. Benjamin Child was among those who contributed to the erection of the First Church of Roxbury.

Benjamin Child is described in the Child genealogy, as the nephew of Deacon Ephraim Child of Watertown, Mass., who came over in 1630 from probably Bury St. Edmunds in Co. Suffolk, England. The same relationship is also stated by Bond in his History of Watertown, whose opinion undoubtedly influenced the author of the genealogy. Bond also gave Richard and John Child, who are mentioned in the will of Deacon Ephraim, as his nephews. To the compiler of this history, the proper interpretation to be given to the will of Ephraim, is that Ephraim, the son of Benjamin Child of Roxbury, bears the same relationship to Deacon Ephraim, as does Richard and John; the bequests are similar in character and extent.

Savage, in his Genealogical Dictionary of New England, says: Benjamin of Roxbury, probably nephew of Ephrain here, son of Benjamin in England. Then later on speaking about the will of Deacon Ephraim: provided for widow

Eliz., for Richard and John Child, probably nephews, and Ephraim another nephew, son of his brother Benjamin.

Richard Child married Mehitable Dimick 17 Apr. 1662 at Watertown (Ct. R.), from this record it is clear that he was much younger than Benjamin, who married Mary Bowen about 1653.

The first mention of Benjamin Child was when he witnessed a deed the 3 Nov. 1651, for ten acres and a halfe sold by Joseph Patchin of Rocksbury to John Dane of the same town (Suff. Deed I: 145). He was therefore of full age in 1651, and if he married at the same age as Deacon Ephraim married Elizabeth Palmer, or Richard Child married Mehitable Dimick, he would be born about 1620, or at the earliest twenty seven years after Deacon Ephraim. This difference between the ages of the oldest and youngest child in a family sprung from one or two mothers is not impossible.

In a pamphlet in the possession of the N. E. H. & G. S., Deacon Ephraim and Benjamin Child are called brothers,

which is the conclusion accepted in this book.
