Bath / Bathe Distribution

in the 1901 British Census

          The map below indicates the presence in 1901of all males with the surname of  Bath or Bathe. The results were obtained by county from the 1901 census of England and Wales available on line from the PRO. There are over 32 million individual records contained in the census, with somewhat less than half of them being males. In total there are 794 Bath and 158 Bathe males, of all ages, for a total of 952. Of these 202 were found in the city of London alone. An additional 376 Baths and 79 Bathes have misidentified counties, therefore bringing the grand total to 1407. See the breakdown by county below.

          Further examination of males of all ages in the 1901 census has revealed the incidence of medieval town names used as surnames:

          As opposed to known medieval surnames with no known place of the same name. (Some possible variants were examined as shown. The Bassetts and Sandfords were relations of Sir Henry de Bathonia (d. 1260). Both families are claimed to have arrived with William the Conqueror. Two Giffard males arrived with Duke William. Sir Walter de Bathe, Henry's supposed brother, married a Giffard. The other names come from Risdon's list of Devon sherrifs". The reader is left to make his own conclusions.
