Edward Paddy Bath 1803 - 1845

The youngest son of Henry Bath of Rose Hill ( 1776 - 1844 ), Edward was born at Portreath, Cornwall on 1 Jan. 1803 and attended Sidcot School, Somerset from 1813 to 1816.

It appears that Edward spent some time in the East Indies during the 1820s, as his father is recorded as taking time off to go to London to "equip my youngest son for the East Indies".

By 1840, Edward returned to Swansea where he was employed as an "agent" and resided at Marine Cottage, Hamlet of St. Thomas, Swansea. He had married Sarah Brown née Askew, a widow, born 1815 at Cork, Ireland and had by her two sons. John Henry Bath born Oct 1840 and Edward Askew Bath born 6 May 1842. John Henry died 09 Jan 1846 age 5 and was buried in the Quaker Burial Grounds, Swansea

Upon the death of his father in 1844, Edward was bequeathed a portion of the proceeds from his father's "wharfs and embankments on the side of the river Tawe".

Edward Paddy Bath died on the 10 May, 1845 and was buried at the Friend's (Quaker) cemetery in Swansea.

The 1851 census reveals Sarah Bath (36) and her son Edward (8) living in a house at Fabiens Bay, Swansea. The house is shared by Sarah’s cousins, ( Birchall Page) Elizabeth Conway (34) and Ada Morgan (19) both from Ireland and a 17-year-old servant, Leah Davies. By 1861, Edward (18) and his mother (47) have relocated to Herbert Place. Edward is a merchant's clerk and his mother is listed as receiving an annuity, perhaps from her father-in-law's legacy. Mary Roberts (41) is employed as a servant indicating a respectable household income. In 1871, at Bryn-hyfryd No. 1 Sarah (55) is still living with her unmarried son Edward (28) and continuing to employ Mary Roberts. Edward is still a merchant's clerk. 1881 finds the pair still together at No 2 Brynsyfric, but Edward has become a "fire brick merchant". Evylyn Hornfeeld (22), from Ireland, is employed as their servant.

In 1887, Edward Askew Bath married Fanny Heyward, born abt. 1855 in Folkstone, Kent. In 1889 they had a son, Gilbert Edward, born in Swansea. In the 1891 census the family is living in the Sketty, Lower Swansea district and a few doors away lived his 74 year-old mother. Edward is listed as a Metal Merchant. Edward’s Askew Bath's death was recorded in the Portsea Registration District in 1896, his mother Sarah, died in 1893 and was buried in the Churchyard at Oystermouth.
