Silverton Cemetery

I have photographed the majority of the headstones in the part of this cemetery that lies on the East side of Hooper Avenue, at least, all of the ones that are readable.

Details of some of the residents of Silverton Cemetery
Below are some details on a few of the individuals buried here that I was able to locate.
CHRISTOPHER BENTHAM It seems likely, though not certain, that the two men by this name were father and son, given their ages, names and proximity. The elder Christopher, at least, turns up on the 1880 Federal Census for Dover township (where Silverton is located); he was 4 years old at that time, and lived with his mother, Mary Bentham (age 20) and sister, Mary J. Bentham, age 1. They all resided in the home of William Polhemus, Mary's father (also buried in this cemetery).

CORNELIUS CLAYTON
According to his headstone, he was born in 1801. He was living in Dover Township at least as early as 1860. He was working as a farmer, and lived with 25 year old William Clayton, 19 year old John Clayton, and 78 year old Rebecca Clayton. She seems old enough to be his mother rather than his wife, and she is listed last, beneath the other two men. In fact, his wife, Charity's, headstone says she died in 1867, but for some reason she appears not to have been living with him in 1860.
By 1870, however, Clayton was married to a woman much young than he, Catherine (in 1870, his age was given as 64, and hers as 28). They also had several children, indicating perhaps that they were married in 1871 or 1872:

By 1880, Cornelius was now 75 and no longer working as a farmer, but rather as a "huckster". Catherine was 40 now, and only James, now 15, was still with them from 1870. New children were there though; Annie V. Clayton, 10; Barton Clatyon, 6; Elias Clayton, 2; and a step-son, Joseph T. Applegate, age 17. Perhaps he was Catherine's child from a prior marriage, but I am not certain.
per his headstone, Cornelius died in 1889.

WILLIAM R. CLAYTON
According to his headstone, he was born in May of 1830. He turns up in Dover Township with his family at least as early as 1870, with his wife, Susan, and a 7 month old daughter, Mary. A 33 year old woman named Mary Bogert also lived in the home, employed as a seamstress--I suspect she is Susan's sister. The William Clayton family was the next census entry on the 1870 census down from that of Clayton Cornelius.
In 1880, William and Susan had several children living with them in Toms River:

Again, a woman named Mary J. Boggert lived here--but not the same one as in 1870; this woman was 82 years old, and listed as William's mother-in-law.

HANNAH HARVEY
Hannah and her husband, Jacob Harvey, were living in Brick Township as of 1850, when he was 50 years old. At that time, they had several children living with them:

By 1860, it appears that Jacob was dead, and Hannah Harvey was living in Brick with her daughter, Martha, now 17. All the other children were gone.
By 1870, Hannah was living with her daughter's family; Martha had married Henry Truex and moved to Middletown, in Monmouth County. Henry at that time worked on the railroad. Henry and Martha Truex were the parents of: In 1880, Hannah Harvey was still living in Middletown with Henry, who was by then a fisherman, and the rest of the Truex clan. Presumably that is where she died in 1885.

DANIEL F. POLHEMUS
Daniel was living in Dover Township as of 1870, along with wife Rebecca, daughter Rachel, as well as his mother, Rachel Polhemus.
In 1880, he and his family were still residing in Dover Township. He was 36 years old, and worked as a farmer. His wife, Rebecca, was 35 at that time. The following children lived with them:

Daniel's mother, Rachael Polhemus (age 73) and sister, Adaline Polhemus, 34, both lived with him in 1880.

JAMES POLHEMUS
As of 1870, James was living in Dover Township (the next census entry after William and Daniel Polhemus.
In the home were his wife, Lucy, as well as children Edgar, John W., David, Charles, James (who was missing in 1880; he was 4 in 1870--his headstone in this same cemetery says he died 11 Oct 1870), Rachel A. (age 2, gone by 1880 as well).
James T. Polhemus still lived in Dover Township in 1880, along with his wife, Lucy (then 48), and the following children:

WILLIAM POLHEMUS
In 1880, he resided in Dover township (presumably in the Silverton area), when he was 70 years old and working as a farmer. His wife, Mary, was 57, and daughter Ella L. Polhemus was 16. Also living with him was his daughter, Mary Bentham, age 20, and her son, Christopher Bentham (who is also buried in this cemetery), and daughter, Mary J. Bentham, age 1.
In 1880, William was a close neighbor of Daniel Polhemus and James Polhemus.

Thomas Tilton
This family was living in Dover Township (Toms River) by at least 1870. Thomas was 27 years old, and his wife, Sarah, 23. They had one son, 4 year old William.
By 1880, the family had grown--and Thomas was no longer a farmer, but a fisherman. The Tilton children now living with them were:

Thomas' mother-in-law, Lydia Hurley, age 71, also lived with the family in 1880.
