Saint Mary's Cemetery
St. Mary's Cemetery

This is the small Catholic cemetery, just up the road from Batsto and Pleasant Mills. The church is no longer standing, and many of the headstones are difficult to read.

UPDATE: I recently made a return trip to St. Mary's, and now, thanks to the age of digital cameras, I was able to easily get images of most of the headstones in the cemetery and post them here.

It has been reported to me recently that James' stone has now been destroyed by vandals, though I have not seen the vandalism myself.

Mary's 1860 census entry lists her as an "idiot". One researcher believes, but of course can not be 100% certain, that Mary had Downes Syndrome

**I did not see this headstone when I was there, but it appears on a 1959 transcription at the Atlantic County Historical Society.

The following information was provided to me by another researcher regarding one of the missing headstones:
"I was just on this site and found an error that needs correcting. I wrote to you sometime ago saying vandals had destroyed the tombstone of James McCambridge, who was from Co. Antrim Ireland. I have no proof other than my grandfather McCambridge's word for it. He forgot the dates on it but said it had ANTRIM in large letters at the bottom of it. This James was 97 in the 1860 Census, living with his son James McCambridge in Burl. Co. Wash. Twp. The son is the one who died 23 Sept. 1886, age 80 and his stone is still standing.
