Coleman
Coleman Family

According to the invaluable diary of young Isa Leek of Pleasant Mills , there was a John Coleman living in that town at the beginning of the 20th century, by the name of John...it was her uncle. (per diary entry for 31 Aug 1907). There are a number of Coleman references I have come across throughout this area, and I have not had much luck attaching them to one another. The following Coleman family appears on the 1850 Census for Washington Township: 12

122 127 Coleman Richard 38 NJ Laborer
Hannah 35 NJ

In 1885, the following Colemans are found; possibly the Samuel that is head of household here is the same one that was seen at 6 mos. of age in 1850.

In 1895, there is another Coleman family that appears in Washington Township; the relation to the family from 1885 is unclear as there was no Jesse in the family of 1885. However, the family of David and Sophia Coleman was still living in the Township as well in 1895:

The David Coleman who appears on these censuses was , at least in 1890, a resident of Batsto, according to the veteran's Census taken in that year. He was a Civil War veteran, having served from 23 Aug 1864 until 6 June 1865, when he was presumably discharged due to the disabling wound he received by being shot in the left leg. He served in Co. A, 3rd NJ Cavalry. Additional information regarding him comes from the 1905 Census, which also mentions that he was living at Batsto. David was born in June of 1847; his son, Wilber was living with him in 1905 as well (no mention of his wife, Sophia; she died in 1898 according to her headstone). Wilber was born in December of 1885.

Jesse Coleman, who also appeared on the 1895 census, was a Batsto resident n 1905 as well. Jesse was born in New Jersey in July of 1861; his wife, Maggie, was born in April of 1867. They had two children still living with them in 1905; Ada (b. 1890) and Emma (b. Dec 1893). According to the Batsto Citizen's Gazzette vol. XVIII #3, Ada grew up to marry Theda Ashton. All of this family still lived at Batsto in 1910; additionally the Amos Ford, who appeared in 1895 on the census with David Coleman's family, shows up in 1910 living with Jesse and is mentioned as Jesse's uncle on that census. David Coleman did not live at Batsto any longer in 1910, although according to his headstone in the Pleasant Mills Cemetery, he lived until 21 March, 1921.
