There is a fairly large body of research available concerning the family of this name that lived in or around the New York area from the late 17th century on. Most of what I have posted here is from largely secondary sources, and if you have something to correct or add to it, I would appreciate an e-mail at [email protected].
I have found a few references here and there to a rather hard to swallow genealogy of this family going all the way back to 1030 A.D.; most of it comes from one particular website that did not provide sources. However if you'd like to view that genealogy, and perhaps add or detract from it, you can see it here.
For this page, I will start with what Nicholas De Pui, as this seems to be where other genealogies have begun and seem fairly well researched. The link above to the De Pui family prior to Nicholas seems somewhat less reliable.
Nicholas De Pui, or De Puy, or Depuy (or just about any other spelling you can think of) was probably born in Paris sometime around the year 1630. At some point he emigrated to the New World but I am not sure when exactly; they were still in France as of 1660, when Moses was born, but by 1664 they were in New York. Being French it seems he would have gone to New France initially, although if they were Huguenots fleeing persecution they may have gone to one of the other colonies. At any rate, he and his wife Catherine De Vos eventually ended up in the New York colony; Nicholas would die in New York City in 1691. Catherine, who was probably younger than he (she was born in Flanders in 1634) survived him by 14 years; sometime after his death she relocated to Staten Island, as that is where she died.
Nicholas and Catherine had several children:
Moses was married to Maria Wynkoop. They had the following children:
