Hickman
Hickman

I don't have a great deal of info on this family (yet), but if you can add anything to this page please send us an e-mail at [email protected].

John Hickman was born about 1725, died about 1784. He was married to Esther Robertson on 1 Feb 1746 in Gloucster County, NJ. John and Ester had nine children; one of these at least was named Jospeh Hickman.

Around 1794, Joseph left Egg Harbor Township, Gloucester County and moved to Galloway Township (in the same county). He had three sons, one of which may have been James H. Hickman, born 1802. James was married in 1823 to Mary D. Blake and moved from Galloway Township to Illinois about 1836.

Another Hickman I know of was John Hickman, who was the father of George Hickman, born 1839 and died 1893. George was married to Elizabeth H. Mathis on 20 Jan 1861. They were the parents of:

  1. Calvin Hickman. Recently I have been contacted by a family from Port Republic, NJ concerning this man. They live in a house built by someone of this name, ca. 1900 and we believe that it may be this man. The same family is in possession of a duck decoy carved by the same man. If you have any information regarding this man, please contact [email protected].
  2. Oscar Hickman
  3. Mary Hickman, born 26 Sep 1865. She married Charles Watson Mathis, Sr. in New Gretna on 6 May 1882. At some point they moved to Seaside Park in Ocean County, for that is where Charles died in 1934.
  4. Joseph M. Hickman, born in 1868. He was married to Lida Cramer.
****UPDATE****
The above information may or may not be absolutely accurate. Speculation on the issue of John Hickman can be summed up as follows:
Joseph may have been the son of John but it would depend on his birthdate. Joseph shows up in tax rateables as early as 1785, so he must have been born by 1764. (On the old side to start having children in 1802 and continue through 1820, but not out of the question. He may even have had older children yet to be identified.) John was married in 1746. If Lt. James was his son, it would have been a tight squeeze for Joseph to have been Lt. James' son. Lt. James would have been 17 or 18 at Joseph's birth, at the oldest. Possible but unlikely.

So the case against John being the father of Joseph is:
Joseph who was the father of the above Joseph, Oliver P. and James H. was not the son of the John who married Esther Robertson. That couple would have been way too old. I am not certain, but I believe Joseph's father was Lt. James Hickman, whose wife MAY have been Sophia Mannering. Lt. James' father may have been the John you referenced. This family is really tough to figure out due to the general lack of records in the area at that time. The county seat was clear across the state and few people were bothering to record anything.
