Mick Family
Mick Family

I am greatly indebted to Rosanna M. for providing most of this information.

The Mick family originally came from Ireland. There were supposedly five brothers who came to this country from Ireland in the 18th century:

  1. Borick Mick. He is buried in the cemtery at Pleasant Mills. He died Jan 9, 1794 at the age of 30.
  2. William Mick
  3. Israel Mick. He was born in Ireland and married an Elizabeth in 1814.They were the parents of Sarah Mick, who married George Ryan.
  4. ??? Mick
  5. Michael Mick

Michael Mick was born about 1763 in the either the Channel Islands, Galway , Ireland, or possibly Cobb, Queenstown County Cork, Ireland. He was married to Mary Moore, daughter of John Moore of Burlington County. Mary died 1 Mar 1814 in Weymouth, and is buried in the cemetery at Pleasant Mills. Michael died before 1830, as that is when the probate record of his will is dated. It states that:
Town of Wilna- leaves all land on road from Carthage to Alexandria (homestead) to beloved wife, Mary, after her death to second son, Israel. Leaves all land in the City of Philadelphia, NY to be divided equally among his five daughters (not named) codicil- leaves ten dollars to oldest son, Michael who received his share earlier.

Michael and Mary married on 4 Dec 1783. Michael is recorded as one of the workers in the Martha Furnace Diary. Michael of Martha Furnace was the father of:

Michael Mick, jr. He married Delia (Delilah?) DeVinney about 1802 somewhere in Burlington County, NJ. Delilah was the daughter of Richard DeVinney and Amy Worse. She died at the Weymouth Furnace in December 1814. However, as Rosanna has pointed out, there is evidence that Delilah didn't die in 1814 as suggested. I believe that she is often confused with her mother in law, Mary Mick who died in 1814 at Weymouth and who is buried in Pleasant Mills.

Michael Sr. is recorded in the Martha Furnace Diary. He is one of the workers. Descendants of Michael Mick, Jr. According to Martha: The Complete Furnace Diary and Journal 1808-1815 (by Henry H. Bisbee et al.) it says:

Sep 29, 1810:"Delilah Mick Delivered of a Son, who is to be called Joseph. It is also represented that Michael was put to bed through the effects of too mus Tiff."
December 07, 1814: "Delila Mick was put to bed this Evening and lo, conceived, and brought forth a fine Son."
December 08, 1814: "Patrick Hamiltons team moving Michael Micks Mother in Law up from Tuckerton."
The same source also tells us that on 10 Apr 1810 his house at Martha Furnace burned down, and he moved to Weymouth in July of 1813. In 1814, his wife died and was buried at Batsto. (Since Batsto does not have it's own graveyard, she is probably buried at Pleasant Mills. As of 1819, however, he was still recorded as being at Weymouth.

From 1808-1813, Michael Mick, jr. was boss at Martha Furnace. Rosanna has found good evidence that Michael Mick, jr. later went to Jefferson County-Wilna Twp. NY, as evidenced by this census entry from that place in 1850:
Name Age Birthplace Occupation
Joseph Mick 39 NJ moulder
Alice Mick 27 VT
Emily Mick 3 NY b. Jan 14 1847
Michael Mick 68 NJ farmer
Dalilah Mick 67 NJ
Ann A. Mick 7 NY
The 1860 shows no Michael, and Delilah is living with Joseph Mick, age 48, born in NJ. Also in the home in 1860 were Alice, age 34 (this time it says born in NH); Evinia, age 14, and George, age 10, both born in NY.

The children of Delia and Michael Mick were:
