It is suspected that the family may have been listed as "Miller" in Lower Alloways Township. The 1840 maps show a Milley farm adjacent to the McIntyre farm near Atsion. It is known that a John McIntyre married one Bridget Milley. She was apparently born in Ireland in 1773, and probably married John before 1808.
UPDATE 4 JUN 2002
According to Richard McIntyre, a visitor to this site (sorry I took so long to post this Richard )
Bridget Milley apparently married Jno (John) Mc Intyre prior to 1808 when the first child was born in New Jersey. Both had emigrated from Ireland and it is
unknown if they married in America or Ireland. It is possible that Bridget was born in 1772 by the death age. She is buried in
St. Marys near Batsto Village, NJ.
A nearby stone lists: James and Mary Milley. James died Sept 1, 1856 aged 83 years and Mary died August 29, 1849 aged 72 years. An early map of the area shows adjacent farms in what is now Shamong township belonging to Milley and Mc Intyre. An 1858 map shows the farm of E. Mc Intyre adjacent to a the farm of P. Milley along the Medford-Atsion Rd.
The 1840 Census lists James Milley in Washington Township but in 1830 the listing is Miller.
There are several possibilities for the origin of the Milley name in Ireland, such as Millau, Miley or Millet.
