Shields Family
John Shields was the father of Wesley Shields; he appears on the Federal Census for 1830 in Washington Township with his children.
Wesley Shields had two brothers, Louis or Lewis and George.
Lewis married Sarah Southard of Batsto.
Wesley married her sister, Mary L. Southard. It appears this couple is buried in the
Pleasant Mills Cemetery; there are headstones there for Wesley Shields and his wife,
Mary. However, the dates given on the census for their ages do not correspond
with the dates on the headstones; it is entirely possible that the dates from
one of these documents, probably the census, is wrong.
The children of Wesley Shields and Mary Southard would be, according to their headstones in the cemetery at Pleasant Mills,:
- Elizabeth Shields, born 1844.
- Elizabeth Shields, born 1863.
- Rachel Shields, born 1866.
- Sarah Shields, born 1868.
Wesley Shields would later take a second wife, Sarah Emma Sooy Birdsall, who was the widow of Robert Birdsall and the
daughter of Nicholas and Sarah Sooy.
