Two Fishermen Drowned at Bay Head
Jesse Sculthorp and Elwood VanNote Die in Surf
Two men were drowned by the upsetting of a skiff off Bay Head last Saturday morning. Another occupant of the boat
was saved. The drowned men are Jesse Sculthorp, 55 years old, and Elwood VanNote, 45 years old, both residents
of Point Pleasant. The rescued man is Joseph VanNote of Point Pleasant. The body of Elwood Van Note was found
shortly after the boat capsized. Sculthorp and the two VanNotes left Bay Head early Saturday morning for the fishing
banks. They were in a three oar boat and had just reached the bar, a short distance from land, when a huge breaker capsized
their skiff. It is said the boat was upended by the comber, and turned a complete somersault, coming down
bottom up. Jesse Sculthorp and Elwood VanNote were unable to grasp the boat and were drowned. Joseph
VanNote held on to the upturned boat until help reached him and he was brought safely to shore. The boat was
not more than a hundred yards from the shore when it capsized. The drowned men were deep sea fishermen and
were well known at Point Pleasant, where their families lived.
