Explosion at Munitions Plant near Sayreville
Explosion in Morgan
Less than a month before the end of the first World War, one of the nation's largest munitions plants in the Morgan section of Sayreville exploded. It was assumed to be some kind of accident at that plant, although the precise cause remains unknown. 87 employees at the plant died, and thousands were left homeless, exposed to the cold New Jersey winter just as the flu epidemic was sweeping the country. Nearly 100 people ultimately died from the blast, and six thousand were afflicted with the flu in the aftermath. 14 bodies were never identified and buried in a mass grave.
